Is anybody here an expert on Internet Explorer 7?

I have been using it basically since it came out and it has one feature in it that aggravates the snot out of me and I can't figure out how to turn it off.

When I go to pretty much any site, there will be certain words on the page that are highlighted and when you roll across them with your cursor they pop up a stupid little window that you either have to close, ignore or wait for 10 seconds or so for it to go away.

I've got the popup blocker turned on and that doesn't stop the annoying little windows.

I don't really want to switch browsers to Firefox mostly because I don't want to have to take the time to learn a new program. I'm lazy!

Any suggestions?

Pretty much any of them.

Try this page;
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,354552,00.html

In the following paragraph, the words "disk jockeys" are green and underlined. When I roll over them with the cursor an ad pops up for the Yellow Pages. The paragraph is about 14 down in the article.

"I got to thinking, if I just took the same kind of songs I'd been singing and added violins to them, I'd have a new sound," he told The Associated Press in 2002. "They cussed me, but the disc jockeys grabbed it. ... The artists began to say, `Aww, he's left us.' Then within a year, they were doing it!"

I just reloaded that page a few times.

On first load, I only got the word "Music" underlined.

used that to do a search for the answer above, BTW.

On subsequent loads, having changed nothing, I'm not getting any underlines.

I don't think it's really a problem with Internet Explorer - I think it's some sort of embedded advertising. I see it too on some sites. In some cases it may work only on Internet Explorer. I use Firefox as my web browser and see none of that on FoxNews.com but have seen it on other sites.

It could be you got some spyware that it trying to direct you to advertising sites where they make money by the click. Ever run a spyware scan on your computer? Try Ad-aware, a free anti-spyware program from Lavasoft. (google for it.)

By the way, I do recommend the Firefox web browser, which I much prefer to Internet Explorer...

Also, how many tool bar "helpers" do you have installed on your browser? Know what I mean by tool bar? 3rd-parties like Google and Yahoo are the most common - they install an extra line of options (search, etc.) under your Internet Explorer options near the top. Sometimes a 3rd party tool bar will add these "enhanced" search things embedded in web pages to direct you to advertising. I don't care for tool bars myself. Some people get them installed without realizing it.

Stands up and applauds Andrew. He is a genious! The PC I used earlier had no add-on toolbars and no annoying pop-up. The computer I am now using has the Google toolbar and does have the pop-up. By un-installing it, closing the internet, cleaning the caches, and restarting the internet it is now history!

BRAVO!!!

Have a program like Hijack This?
You could have downloaded something that installed on your pc that serves pop up ads, even if you're not using a browser!

Missing,

THANK YOU!!!

I downloaded IE7PRO and loaded it.

The ad blocker in it stopped those annoying ads!

Just to test it I turned it off and went to the same page and they were back.

To all the others who suggested fixes, thank you too!

Andrew, I'm with you. I don't like add on tool bars either. The only one I have came with Norton 360 and it basically just stores my log on's so I don't have to enter passwords and such.

Again a big THANKS to all!

I have heard of a few people having constant rebooting issues after installing XP SP3 (like, the machine never boots). This like 3 weeks ago, and since then MS has continued to patch it apparently. I don't have any real need to install SP3, but if I do install it, I'll probably image my hard drive first, in case I need to do an "undo."

I love Firefox. But it has one big downside (at least in version 2.0): terrible memory leaks. If you keep Firefox open long enough, eventually it will eat a huge amount of RAM, 700M or 800M, until it becomes so slow you just close all Firefox windows and re-start it.

But, Firefox 3.0 Beta seems to have licked the memory problems for good. I saw a great blog post about it and how they seem to have finally conquered the memory issues. They compared memory use to IE 7 and it's way better than that now.

Andrew, you are so right about 2.0! I am also a big fan of the Firefox browser and happy about the improvements. I think it was Steve Naganuma on the other side that turned me on to Adblock Plus to eliminate ads and popups using Firefox. I am pretty impressed with it.
