Here is a thread on another board I frequent about a guy in Colorado who bought a Hydrogen/Oxygen injection system and installed it on his Land Cruiser.

http://forum.ih8mud.com/60-series-wagons/216983-hho-injection-generator-results. html

He claims that it improved his mileage 30%.

I don't know the guy but don't have any reason to doubt him.

The thread is pretty long and there are several good questions raised and many good comments.

It's just something I'm throwing out there for your perusal and/or enjoyment.

If I can scrape up $400 over the summer that I don't know what to do with, I might try one (that's a big might, though!).

It seems reasonable but I'm always skeptical about gimmick things. That's just my nature!

Here is the link to the manufactures web site where the guy got his HHO generator.

The information is mostly anedotes with "claims". I'd rather see test data from the people making the device. People in that forum already mention that such data is lacking.

FYI, I've recently fallen into the camp that Hydrogen in vehicles is a non-starter. Hydrogen cost a lot to create and store. Expensive (cooling systems) and heavy equipment (tanks holding highly compressed hydrogen) -- thousands of pounds addition to a vehicle to get the same amount of energy that one gallon of gasoline can deliver.

Not too real-world practical.

Why couldn't we use a giant sized rubber band? Park your car in the garage over night where an electric motor winds it up good and tight, then it's used to power the car throughout the day.

Right. The only real data is in the first post and that was in April. No data since.

I just thought it was interesting that there is a commercially available system, not some kluged together kit.

His first set of numbers looks promising, but I (along with most of the posters in that thread) would like to see some data with it installed on a freshly tuned motor and run over a several month period with highway and city type driving.

If it still looked good, then I would be more inclined to try one myself.

Skep, I don't think having high pressure tanks of hydrogen in a vehicle is a good idea either. Too much inherent danger in an accident! This system uses water and vinegar and there is no high pressure storage. "Should" be safe(er)!!

Roger, Cool idea!! As a backup to the rubber bands, we could cut holes in the floor boards for our feet to reach the ground like in the Flintstone mobile!

Yeah, but grinding the calluses off your feet is a bummer!

From his posts, the guy was clearly burning fuel very incompletely, so it makes sense that hydrogen injection would improve the completeness of his burn and therefore his fuel efficiency.

However, most users will see a MUCH lower improvement... if you're driving a modern, fuel injected car (anything with an O2 sensor) that's in decent tune, I bet your improvement will be just about nil.

Think it will help if I install that on my new rig?

As much as I love to drive it, it sure is a bitch to park!

I think that the important detail in this story is that the guy who is running this system lives at 8000 ft. elevation, and he runs into problems when he tries to start the vehicle at that high elevation. His engine can't get enough oxygen, so he's using this system as a supplement.

I once asked some folks who know more about engines than I do about fuel/air mixtures. The answers that I got converged on the following: the mixture in a gasoline engine, by design, puts more fuel into the cylinder than what can be burned with the oxygen that goes in there. The unburnt fuel helps to cool off the exhaust valves. If one were to run a stoichiometric mix (all the fuel burns and there is no leftover oxygen), the exhaust gases would be too hot, and the exhaust valves would get burned up. Therefore, in theory, one could get better gas mileage out of an engine by making the fuel burn more completely. In the real world, the materials that would be needed to withstand the high temperatures that would result are too expensive to put into an engine.
