I know McCain brought it up first, but Hillary wants to pay for this by making the oil companies make up the difference with their profits? What? The end result would be the oil companies would just raise the price faster. I try and refrain from this side of the board, but am I the only one that finds this just insane?

I agree, it's a terrible idea, and I think it has finally swayed me to vote for Obama. I've been leaning Obama for a while but I like Hillary too. But the way each of them has handled this issue has sealed it for me.

It's kind of surprising that McCain initially floated it out there - but it really didn't catch on until someone actually challeneged the idea when Hillary endorsed it.

Hillary: "I'm for a federal gas tax holiday"

Reporter: "Who is going to pay for it?"

Hillary: "The oil companies will pay for it from their profits"

Hmm, to me sounds 1) desperate, and 2) under estimating the intelligence of the voters.

Paul, you are right. It's a stupid idea and serves no purpose. Just political mumbo-jumbo hoping voters are stupid enough to go for it. What we need is a major effort on an alternative energy source, not these tiny band aids.

Glad you came over to slum it for a bit.

Well, it sounds good to people who don't sit down and do the numbers. That's pretty much what Hillary and McCain are counting on. Obama is right, your savings probably wouldn't be enough for an extra tank of gas. As Bush likes to put it, fuzzy math.

Yeah, Obama hit this one out of the park. I think I used the word "gimmick" to describe it before he did. It would have been easy for him just to go along with the other two. Instead, Obama has created some light between him and his opponents.

Let's just hope people realize he's right.

He is right. It's a gimmick meant to buy votes. And, at least Hillary's plan has some sort of funding to offset the fuel tax losses. McCain just wants to charge it on the Federal credit card. More borrow and spend GOP policy, no thanks!
