"62kgw" may take some solace in that 1640 KDZR seems to have suspended IBOC operation and is instead running 10kHz analog audio. The stereo is not back (you can't have everything).

Some time ago, I had read that people were experiencing reception problems on 1640 which showed up as their (HD)Radios losing lock on the signal and dropping back to analog. Was anything ever revealed about what caused these problems?

I traded e-mail with John White, KDZR Chief Engineer.

Problems with the HD exciter, and reflected power problems caused by changes in the de-tuning of the PGE tower next to the site (former main and now backup site for KNRK).

In a few years, for most AMs, it could be more advantageous to turn of the analog signal instead.

I'm curious if KDZR has been having problems for a few weeks now... Since about 04/14 or so I've been having trouble keeping an HD lock in the car, last week a co-worker mentioned that Radio Disney sounded horrible and wondered why (in analog). Yesterday I tuned in and had no HD lock issues at all and the analog side even sounds like it has a little more punch.

Time to start working on the audio processing and getting song data transmitted on the HD side!

The "KISS" rule has been violated with impunity for many years now. There is little money and no job security in doing stuff the same way that it was done before.

for those of you not familiar with the KISS Rule,it's Keep It Simple Stupid!!!!
Simple stuff is easier to implement and maintain, less prone to trouble/failures!!!
Kind of opposite to Rube Goldberg Designs!!!Then there is also the Good, Fast and Cheap rule also!!!!Does HD meet that?

Well, what I was getting at above could probably be better understood by the recent layoff of KOIN's chief engineer and his replacement with a "Corporate" engineer responsible for several television stations. In other words, the MBAs and bean counters at these broadcasting conglomerates want to cut staff costs anywhere that they can. They are reluctant to keep a guy on the payroll who just does the same-old same-old, quietly keeping the station's equipment running. A contract guy could be called in to do that, instead. Therefore, if these engineers want to keep their jobs, they have to do a song-and-dance to the non-engineering management types about how they are poised to deploy HD-Radio, next-generation automation systems, or whatever the next buzzword happens to be.

Some of these engineers probably love the way that well-done analog AM Stereo can sound, but they know that the "suits" and the corporate chief engineer would give them hell for it. At KLYC, KISS might stand for "keep it simple, stupid!" In the world of broadcast chains, KISS has been re-defined to "keep it standardized stupid!"
