On Friday "The Portland Tribune" announced layoffs and cut backs. The Tribune will become a weekly starting next Thursday. Read more about this:

The article they elude to that ran in Friday's Tribune is here:

Interesting that they're going to try taking on the Oregonian by going almost 100% online. Seems a bit like a broadcast company saying 'we're going to take on KXL and KEX by having a web-only station.'

I know people that are Oregonian carriers that wonder how much longer printed newspapers as a whole will last. Circulation is going way down everywhere and more and more people that cancel are those saying 'can't afford rate increase,' and/or 'has internet.' The people that are supplying the racks and delivering subscriptions sure aren't getting paid any more than they were when gas cost less (and some have even quit because they were spending more money in gas to deliver the newspapers than they made).

Paperboy(Papergirl?) delivery would help.then Readers would not have to go out and search for one of those green boxes. Just open your front Door and there it is.they should also be Daily I thinkthat would knock out the Oregonian!!

Oh great, another thing to read while sitting at the computer -- something I DON'T need. I don't wanna carry around a laptop either.

I do enjoy reading the Portland Tribune, both the hard copy and the online version. The front page story is generally most interesting and with the online version I enjoy having the opportunity to post my opinions. But I really enjoyed reading Pete Schulberg’s column on the media. I thought he did a GREAT job and was very disappointed when the Portland Tribune decided to ax his column.

It’ll be interesting to see if the transition to a once weekly publication will last. I’ve read contrasting accounts as to whether newspapers are making money. Some contend they are, others say no. It’s hard to tell. I’m sure it’s a matter of margins.

Good luck.

I believe the reason that adults with motor vehicles now deliver newspapers on routes with 100+ subscribers each is due to liability reasons... think it's something along the lines of what happens if while a kid is delivering papers on a bike and mowed over by an irresponsible motorist who's talking on their cell phone in one hand and holding their coffee in the other... they figure that the newspaper and the distributor might be held liable for the kid being out that early.

I've canceled my newspaper subscription. No need to fork over the $$$ for it anymore with everything available online for free.

The only time I miss it is reading the comics while eating a bowl of cereal in the morning. :-) But even the comics are available online.
