Oregon Democrats, who began the year with about 70,000 more registered voters than Republicans, have doubled that advantage, which stood Friday at 826,984 Democrats to 685,344 Republicans.

The trend of soaring Democratic registration and essentially flat Republican registration has been happening across the state, from heavily Democratic Multnomah County to such GOP strongholds as Jackson County in southern Oregon. Jackson County still has more registered Republicans than Democrats, but the GOP lead there has been cut by almost 4,000 voters.

Democrats now outnumber Republicans in Clackamas and Washington counties, both critical swing areas.

Since Jan. 2, elections officials have registered more than 112,000 voters, roughly divided between new voters and those who have changed their party affiliation. About two-thirds of the party switchers have re-registered as Democrats.

I think there's a word that adequately describes what's going on.
That word is: FRAUD.

These people aren't Democrats, they're just saying so because they want to rig the result of the election.

Dream on Newflyer. Thousands of people are registering to vote specifically to vote against the GOP. My wife being one of the several thousands just being added to the rolls.

Some of us independents have registered temporarily as Democrats so we can vote in the primary. Don't kid yourself if you think all of the new Democrats like myself are suddenly people who have changed their views. Lots of independents and even Republicans are re-registering only so they can vote in the Democratic primary.

There are several races in the Democratic primary that will essentially decide the general election, since no (serious) Republican has announced plans to run, such as the Secretary of State and the Attorney General races. Of course, many people simply want to register a preference between Obama and Clinton and are not trying to "rig" anything.

By contrast, there's really no reason to be registered as a Republican in the May 20 primary. There's nothing major you'd have much say in, and you'd lose your chance to decide important races on the Democratic side.

On May 21, I plan to re-register as "Not a member of a political party." I'll bet others won't take the time to un-join a party, though.

I'm thinking Kevin Mannix is kicking himself for switching to the GOP some years back. I'm a 5th district voter and I'm gonna ensure Kevin stays home.

Then having people sign up as Dems just to vote for Hillary like LimBALH was doing is FRAUD too right???

Much ado about something that won't save McSame from defeat in the fall. Too many folks are forgetting just how angry the electorate is at the shrub and the GOP. Elections are often referendums on sitting Presidents, and CLEARLY the shrub is an ailment that has finally been recognized by even the least educated voters and all but the most zealous Republican hypocrites.

That's exactly what I'm referring to! No "too" about it!
Nobody's going to "beat" Republicans this election (unless they have a hose or a baseball bat or such - something I don't condone). That won't come until November. All that happens here in May is parties voting within themselves. I obviously have no interest in opening the primaries.

Apparantly, the Demomcratic rolls are swelling nationwide:

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/24344152/

The past seven states to hold primaries registered more than 1 million new Democratic voters; Republican numbers mainly ebbed or stagnated. North Carolina and Indiana, which will hold their presidential primaries on May 6, are already reporting a swell of new Democrats that triples the surge in registrations before the 2004 primary.

The contest between Sens. Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama has engaged enough new voters to change the political makeup of the country, experts say. The next several months -- and the general election in November -- will reveal the extent of the shift. Is it a temporary increase in interest resulting from a close election between historic candidates? Or is it a seismic swing in party realignment that foretells the end of the red-blue stalemate.

Credit has to be given to the Obama campaign for a significant number of these new democrat voter registrations. It's a large part of their campaign strategy.

Here in Oregon, I'm disgusted by our state Republican Party leadership's failure to PROVIDE any leadership over the last four years. Instead, they've run up massive debt, failed to engage in any kind of voter registration drive, and have ignored the grassroots.

There is certainly a backlash against the Bush administration, granted. But effective leadership, and an active grassroots effort by the state part would go a long way toward mitigating the Bush problem.

It's going to be a hard, cold November for Oregon Republicans because of our state party's poor leadership.

Just in Oregon? The NATION as a whole! That's why I re-registered as an Independent.
