Does anyone else agree with me that US aid not only needs to be spent on feeding the starving, but also spent on promoting birth control? In nations that are unable to feed the existing population, how much sense does it make to allow that population to continue to grow in the face of food shortages that will inevitably get worse? The promotion or birth control can help reduce the number of suffering humans.

For sure it's about education, but getting that information to those where it will do the greatest good seems to be the challenge.

You're also dealing with social norms and cultural taboos along with political strife and tribal warfare.

Vitalogy - there are three main reasons for the spike in food prices -

1) Farmers are being so heavily subsidized for the production of corn for ethanol, that the wheat and other grains are not being produced. I work in restaurant management in the pizza business, and we have seen our four prices (and trust me, that's a staple item, it's all snowballing downhill to everything else) double in the last year. Cheese prices are at record highs because these farmers are getting into the corn business and out of the dairy cow business.

2) The price of gas. No-brainer here, it costs our suppliers and their suppliers much more to get that product to us. That added cost gets passed on.

3) Our dollar is so weak, it has to stretch more.

One of the biggest catastrophes has been done by our government subsidizing these farmers so heavily to either grow nothing, or to get into ethanol production. Everything else suffers.

Brianl, the other issue you didn't mention is that oil, rice, corn, wheat, etc, are all commodities, and in times of inflation, commodities tend to rise in price.

Don't you think there is also some personal responsibility in our choices too?

Now you can't control prices, but you can control what you spend. I say vote with your dollar.
