Ok so they say 1080 will be getting competition. Lets see if it actually viable and going to generate the income they believe it will. Curiousity got the cat and I decided one late night to see which markets are comprable to Portland size with Pro teams. Well in Markets like SDiego or Dallas they obviously have many teams and they generated a bit more of a total 12+ radio share than a market with less teams. (Based on a 5 book average and in the case of SLC two book) In Dallas they got a 4.3 in SDiego a 3.8 and in KC a 2.5. Well Salt Lake City is similar to PDX since they only have on a major league sports level the NBA, thought they have an MLS team, PDX is a better soccer town. As far as SLC it got a 1.8 in sports radio. So lets see KFXX has been getting 2 share, though two books ago they generated a 2.8 share. Ok then it is rumored they are generating $4.125m in Revs. Not bad, considering they only have one local show. That would put their power ratio at about 1.5. The big question then is what will the new sports fm plan to get? Are they going to bill more than it is billing now? I have heard that they expect to bill close to $4-$5m with the new station. Well I am not too sure where its going to come from unless they are including the revs they are already getting with the sports they are airing on KXL. Hmmm. I know from a sports station in another part of the country that they do about 15-20% of the revs from the teams they air. Then they next step would be what local programming are they going to air and if it is going to be strong enough. Typically if you have local sports talk you could do as high as a 2.2 ratio. Ok if Colin stays with FXX, who will compete against him? Rome has his audience and I think if Canzano goes against the FXX pm show it will be a wash there. Well my head is about to explode and I am sure yours is too.....but I think the new station will do about a 1.2, FXX will do a 1.3. If the new FM does a 1.2 and gets a 2.2 max ratio plus their sports then they could in theory do about $4m. But FXX won't just lay their and take it so I don't think that will be possible. I personally think the market is a $5.5m Sports talk radio market so I think they will both end up with about half the pie. Don't know either sales team but when its all said an done its about the sales peddlers and who is stronger.....As those who have been in programming realize, its the business side making the decisions....again. I probably should at least make some attempt at introducing myself... I'm not in the radio biz (I don't even know what a "voice tracker" IS!).

I'm just a sports-talk radio fan (esp. of the Jim Rome Show, obviously) who began searching the Web for rumors on whether Rome would re-appear somewhere around here, and if so, when and where.

Otherwise, I listen to classical and jazz.. no rock, country, and ESPECIALLY no politics- jabber, religion, or news-talk.

I promise, I'll not start more threads on the state of local sports-talk...

For all the moaning (by people like me) about the shrinking number of local shows on talk radio, sports radio is a contradiction.
You would think that sports is the ultimate local issue. We want Blazers, Ducks and Beavers news... not Vikings, Bears and Giants news.
Yet national sports shows (Rome, Patrick, Costas, ESPN, Fox) do better than most syndicated issue-driven shows.
Add a nearby college team, some Westwood One NFL football and maybe one local show, and you got yourself a radio station.
The plethora of product makes it easy for even the smallest-market AM to some up with a listenable product.
But in a competition situation, somebody has to step up beyond the bare minimum. Let's see if that happens.

I just heard on KXL about the "big announcement" that's gonna happen tomorrow! This is thanks to Mike&Mike having some competitive-eating deal, NOT something to wake up to. When I heard THAT after my alarm went off, I switched just in time to hear the tease for the "big announcement".

Speaking of local-sports talk... When I was first listening to The Fan back in '97, they had Rome, and other than that, ALL local talk. The local talk was AWFUL! Who the heck wants to hear the same discussions of whatever recent thing the Blazers did (good OR bad) discussed by several different hosts, over and over and over... ALL day? Not me. I hope the Game doesn't make the same mistake and go "Rome and all-local"... They need to get together with Fox or somebody and have at least ONE more national show during the day in order to make it work.

2 national shows in mid-days seems pretty reasonable to me, with the locals being in mornings and afternoon drive, with Dawson on non-game nights and then national apparently from 8pm on. It seems like a pretty good mix to me, although i do think the local morning show will struggle against the national morning show on KFXX....but thats about the only area of struggle i forsee, since 95.5 looks like it is live though all major dayparts, something KFXX hasnt done in at least 8 years.....

You know how nice it is when you watch the NHL playoffs and at 24hrs with the receptionist Cute yes but as the guys who know me I go deeper or try then the skin at hand is going to in wants in sports journalism that you see the NHL game and see the players you head in 98 went too school with around 2000-2001 and then went in this school taking just classes in this while Dean gave me my dream in Minor League Athletes and the Teachers Who Taught Them" when I did a school news thing...

So all in my 12 year old self in Personal not kidding in what was is important. All do what they do in a crew sway but Teach them out their, Be grateful, and be that PIMP in the sin bin hip hopping others in what they need then just score or nice rocks in the core in juice the greatness that the consumer buys from as they the listeners stigmatizes the customers message... CARE but do what is Sports in whatever happens is your doing...

If its thy past eyes yee hee I agree in my personal schooled eyes of Blazers Stunts, PSU stunt, Thunder, B-Sports, Hockey too the newer Canadian Sport Lacrosse I know its the toughen rough buff in the gym of weight lost in life for those community I hope not in We are the greatest in wins.

But too me I smile in when they talk in walk... Widen in smiles as one talk I had the sight not just doing her America in saying not me but having the widen view then all but the numbers take their wife’s and others too who they might bight in needing to listen too your clients image...

The business of Sports radio in PDX is a real great $$$ maker in my view.

The others who are in radio are better thou the view should be sighted in conecting in the game of real life... For this was hero of the day is bad in reading... but the subject I have a smile in person Ben Franklin learning the numbers.

I take nothing in true sway but hope best in the game is not on air but out to the comunity has helped me in games...

The local show in the morning with Katy and Kenny vs. a national show is going to do just fine. Canzano is the biggest sports personality in the market, and I love his show. I think Canzano will eventually cause Big Suke and Ian to force themselves into four hours of that club hour they like to do. I just don't see how they can compete vs. Canzano.

Katy brings nothing to the table. She's been in the market a long time and has not made a dent at all.

I hope Canzano has become more interesting than he was when he had a one-hour Friday show on The Fan a couple years ago... THAT was "death radio"!
