To lighten the mood here's a classic from Dave Barry:

It's income tax time again, Americans: time to gather up those receipts, get out those tax forms, sharpen up that pencil, and stab yourself in the aorta.

I mailed my taxes on Monday. Owed money but no surprises. Since I'm self-employed I had to mail five checks and five envelopes (Federal 1040, State 40, TriMet Self-Emp. tax, Fed Estimated, State Estimated). Plus I did our HOA's taxes.

I used Tax Cut (like TurboTax) like I do every year and it worked great.

I certainly understand the self-employed thang too. Sent in what we owed to the Feds for 2007 (got a little back from state). Sent our quarterly's for state and Fed. But it was only three checks not the five you sent.

We have a tax account whom we've used for 18 years.

Sent my stuff in early April.

Mine had no itemizing or credits (I check every year, for both Federal and State, no dice).
Sent both of them off in early February. Received my refunds shortly after. Since I'm going back to school, they've been spent (in a meaningful way). Makes this time of year extremely easy!

I have loads of write-offs, thankfully.

Having 2 businesses to file for, I had 10 of those envelopes and their accompanying checks. Pay the Feds, get some back from Oregon, it's a little better than a wash, but...what a pain.

Now I have a 3 year audit to prep for. Thank goodness my CPA has been on board with us forever and knows our biz and hers inside and out.

The best thing that happened today was my Rush Live CD and T-shirt came in the mail! WOO HOO!!

Andrew,

What the heck is TriMet Self-Emp. tax???

If you are self employed you have to pay something to the Bus line?

I live in Vancouver so I don't have any Portland returns to file.

Yeah, Bill, businesses including the self-employed pay a transit tax if they live/work in parts of Clackamas, Multnomah, or Washington Counties. Just like you in Washington State pay a Business and Occupation tax if you are self-employed.
