Starting in the early '60s I overheard Barney Keep's show as my parents listened. A number of times over several years I heard this novelty music piece on Barney's show; I don't know how to find it, so I hope someone out there may remember it.
It was almost 100% non-vocal except for a single word at the very end. It had frenetic and repetitive sound effects which evoked a sense of machinery and motion, accompanied by a big, energetic brass band. There were a few variations on the basic theme to keep it interesting. At the very end, a woman's stern voice says "FRESH!," a car door slams and you hear several rapid footsteps, followed immediately by a big, swooning brass finish.

I never got to hear "ol Barn" play it but I know the track you describe was by Dean Elliot from a hard to find album called "ZOUNDS! WHAT SOUNDS!." It was a disc of easy listening music loaded with sound effects.

The track is called "The Lonesome Road."

A Google search including "Basta", a company in the Netherlands that re-released it some years back may get you a source for the CD. Amazon doesn't carry it, but via Amazon you can order an overpriced bootleg that includes an album by another artist on the same CD.

I have it in my music collection...It was listed as by Dean Elliot and His Big Band. Ol' Barn used to play it every morning in the 60s. When he retired, and KEX broadcast his last show from the old Portland Civic Theatre downtown they tried to play it, but the tonearm skipped from the wavy warped record and they had to bail out of it...Darn!

Gonna have to look for that album, as I've only heard "Lonesome Road."

Anytime I play it for someone it always gets a smile out of them...fun stuff!

There is a listen link at the Basta website where you can sample a portion of track 1, "It's All Right With Me."

Ah Yes! I sure remember Barney playing that ditty. My Dad always listened Barney. Here's a picture of the Album Cover. You know, I never knew "Tom Petterson" was part of that Band!!

Wow! Four posts overnight, including a link to divshare.com where I can download the music; I just listened to it for the first time in over FORTY YEARS!
Yes, I now remember that Barney played that music every day on his show. I also remember attending Ol' Barn's retirement show at the Civic Theater; I was so touched that I went to the front of the auditorium and knelt with others to be closer to Barney, a dear friend that I had never met.
Thanks so much to everyone!

What a riot to hear. Hilarious - like Spike Jones. Thanks for posting Randy.

Now that I've seen the cover I recall seeing that album in the KEX music library years ago. You should have seen some of the things those guys wrote on album covers back in the 60s and 70s. I remember Herb Alpert's "Whipped Cream and Other Delights" album cover had some really interesting commentary scratched on it.

Geez Bob, thanks for the memories! I spent many a lonely overnight shift staring at the whipped cream album cover.

And I skipped a day at Ron Bailie S.O.B. to attend Barney's last show.
