Lest I be accused of partisanship, how about the fellow that came before Nixon, LBJ? He certainly had an interesting private outlook on things too:

He was wiretapping opponents and receiving enormous illegal campaign contributions a quarter-century before Watergate. His racial attitudes were mixed up beyond any possibility of our untangling them cleanly now: Mr. Dallek quotes him defending the Supreme Court appointment of the very well-known Thurgood Marshall, rather than a black judge less identified with the civil rights cause, by saying to a staff member, "Son, when I appoint a nigger to the court, I want everyone to know he's a nigger."

Even King's black allies in the civil rights movement turned against him when on April 4, 1967 -- exactly one year before his death -- he became the most prominent American to attack the Government's war on Vietnam. At the time, the vast majority of Americans, including blacks, supported the war. The media establishment trashed King for being so uppity as to criticize U.S. foreign policy. The black leaders of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and the National Urban League said King had made "a serious tactical mistake."

Their fears that King's outspokenness would anger President Lyndon B. Johnson -- a champion of civil rights legislation -- were well founded; Johnson railed against "King, that goddamned nigger preacher." In a grotesque ejaculation of racist sexual paranoia, Johnson told King "that his criticism of the war had the same effect on Johnson as if he had discovered that King had raped his daughter."

In the spring of 1968, King was planning a Poor People's Campaign in Washington: "Protesters would engage in massive civil disobedience, tying up traffic, staging sit-ins in Congress and in government buildings and shutting down business in the capital." A bullet in the neck ended King's life days before the campaign was to begin.

Our Presidents said those words, and many more forgotten, buried, redacted, untold and left uncaptured by spinning 5" tapes. We ought to be disgusted by their base bigotry, not blinded by the oft touted things they did out of reluctant compromise rather than profound conviction.

To lighten it up -- and return to the original topic -- Jane Fonda has already endorsed a Presidential candidate in this election. She proudly made her choice clear to every American. If she switched to Obama, she is just a bandwagon hopper. :0)
