It's not even April Fools Day but it's already begun. This from All Access:

------------KKOB Gets ABQ Buzzing Over 'Power Cut' (to 1kw!)------------

CITADEL Talk KKOB-A/ALBUQUERQUE has locals and even the ALBUQUERQUE JOURNAL biting for its assertion that the station has been ordered by the government to "drop power from 50,000 watts down to 1,000 starting TUESDAY to accomodate other growing markets that have stations on the same 770 Frequency." PD and morning fill-in host PAT FRISCH announced the "order" FRIDAY morning, and the station's website sprouted an online petition to "save" the station from having to cut power. http://www.770kkob.com/customform.asp?id=32084

But no such order is in the FCC database; the FCC generally doesn't order stations to abruptly cut power to make room for other, unallocated stations with a few days' notice and no appeals process, and the fact that TUESDAY is APRIL FOOL'S DAY apparently escaped the JOURNAL when it posted the "news" on its website early FRIDAY. The paper has now appended a note that indicates that TUESDAY is indeed APRIL FOOL'S DAY and that TUESDAY just happens to be the day morning man BOB CLARK returns from vacation.

The link looks like just a ploy to gather email addresses of listeners.

Collecting e-mail address is probably secondary to "show business sizzle."

Creating talk (tune-in) via word-of-mouth is
advertising money can't buy...and far more effective in increasing cume and extending TSL.

Buzz Bennett used to refer to it as "creating dynamic tension between the station and audience."

It engages audience, even if it is ambient.

Think about how much "wallpaper" radio is available daily. It takes something unique to "cut through the crap."

Whether the audience will appreciate being pranked, and it will yield residual good will always should be a consideration, though.

The programmer has to know the audience, and sadly there aren't many still in the trenches.

#9: Fake Disaster Warnings
In 1999 DJs at Oregon radio station KSJJ announced that the Ochoco dam had burst, threatening downstream areas with massive flooding. What made the warning believable was that hundreds of houses in these areas had been damaged the previous year when the Ochoco Creek had flooded, so terrified homeowners who heard the news quickly prepared to flee. Later the DJs informed their listeners that it was all a joke. They had just been 'having a little fun'. The homeowners were not amused.

Were there any April Fool's stunts on the Portland radio dial today? When I tuned in to KNRK earlier this evening and heard "Sunglasses At Night" I thought that my leg was being pulled, but the songs that played after that sounded like more typical 94.7 fare. Ho-hum.

Kisn put on the sponsors as DJ's....Ron Tonkin was always the best! He would of been a star DJ if the love of cars was not his calling! All the car guys were jealous of Ron's on air performance.
Bud Meadows told some great golf stories......And then we had the sponsors that brought their kids in to do the gig. That's another story.

This is MY FAVORITE April Fools Joke:

-------------------------Christmas In Minneapolis------------------------

CBS RADIO AC WLTE (LITE 102.9)/MINNEAPOLIS pulled a fast APRIL FOOL's joke on listeners this morning by flipping to an all-Christmas music format.

With eight inches of snow on the ground, it was more than appropriate as morning show host CINDY BARTON played such holiday favorites as JOHNNY MATHIS' "The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year" and other holiday favorites.

BARTON tells ALL ACCESS, "The phones rang off the hook ... but some people actually thought it was a good idea."

No April Fools....

Joe Cahan from Friendly Cheverolet. He became known for a time as "Joe Friendly " ..

And then there was : Tom Peterson....what a guy !

And remember the guy he was from the east coast and represented some company..Lager Construction, home builders in the Portland area. His name was 'Mike " no last name. He would be sittin' at a coffee table on a TV studio set, usually at KPTV on wrestling night and telling everybody call me and I will come to your home and we can go over your new construction plans , Hey and I take my coffee with creme and "sugah" ( in his brooklyn accent ). He looked like his last name might have been Soprano !
