If you could sit down with you're favorite singer/musician for an hour at the local pub, who would it be?? and WHAT would you be talking about?
By the way this is singer/musicians, no politicians!

I would talk music with Eddie Vedder or Dave Grohl. We share similar tastes ( Split Enz/ Neil Finn/Crowded House and Queen, respectively ) and it would be fun to compare notes.

I think Id like to have a beer with Steven Tyler of Aerosmith. He seems like he would be hilarious to have a conversation with, a great sense of humor and just an overall nice guy. I Would probably talk music with him, since afterall thats what he is known for. Some artists are more animated and personable than others. Here is another question, what artist do you think would be an abslolute bore to have a beer with?

I sat in Eddie Vedder's chair and put on his hat while at his favorite pizza joint in West Seattle. I had a beer and grilled the pub owner about him. So it's almost as if I had a beer with Eddie himself!

I've heard from numerous people that Dave Grohl is one of the nicest guys in the music business. No ego, no nothing just a nice guy who always talks to fans, signs autographs ect. I don't know about Eddie Vedder. One guy I do know who is a total ASSHOLE and I would Never want to have a drink with him is Scott Weiland of Stone Temple pilots. Total ass, who is rude and won't sign autographs and just a mean guy.

I have 4 that I'd like to have beers with; (not in any particular order)

Bob Seeger - Most likely talk about his music. He just seems like a nice guy.

Ted Nugent - I'd like to talk about one of my favorite subjects; Guns and the NRA.

Arlo Guthrie - Would have to ask about Alice's Restaurant! I've had beers with his band, a couple of different times in St. Louis, just not with Arlo (his band said he doesn't drink). They are great guys!

John Prine - Just seems like a down to earth kind of guy. Don't know exactly what we'd talk about, but I'm sure we could find something!

My unhealthy mancrush on Neil Peart would continue ... when I could stop managing to drool all over myself for twenty seconds being in his presence, I would ask him what planet he is from.

Of the still living it would be Willie Nelson although it would have to have some ganja in there somewhere with the beer and conversation would be about all the people he has met. Is the myth about he being one of the few who have toked in the White House how it all came to be. His take on enviromental issues, and finally how best to take a radically different approach on America's War on Drugs and the eventual decriminalization of marajuana.

Duane Allman, gentleman guitarist, if he was alive. I'd want to talk about guitar techniques, naturally!

Of the living, B.B. King, just because. Nobody can reach for the root like B.B.! I'd discuss whatever he wants to talk about.

Radio, in all its shortcomings, did give me some great memories with respect to meeting up and comers. Blessed be, I got to interview:

Chick Corea (during Return to Forevers run in the 70's, I see they've reformed and will play at the Schnitz in June)(Chick, Al DiMeola, Lenny White, Stanley Clarke). On a separate occasion, I spoke with Stanley ... great sense of humor.

Rory Gallagher (dec.) This Irish guitarist played a multitude of percussive stringed instruments and loved Elvis. His brogue made him difficult to understand, but I remember his firm handshake and smile. RIP

David Bromberg A bluesy folk artist some of you might recall. He said, "Andy is it? Screw this interview shit, let me do your show for a couple of hours." This was after his two show performance at our Roxy Theater in Northhampton, PA just north of Allentown. He picked out the music, did the breaks, and interviewed ME!! I loved it.

Annie Haslam and Jon Camp of Renaissance. This band started as an offshoot of the Yardbirds, but by the time this happened
there was no Yard and no original birds.

I think there was one or two others, but that was so long ago.

I also met and spoke with, either backstage at one of our $2 concerts (1973-1976) or at the station the afternoon before the shows:

Peter Frampton
Billy Joel (twice)
Neil Peart, Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson
Buck Dharma, The Bouchard Bros. (Blue Oyster Cult)
Caleb Quaye and Hookfoot (Eltons Tumbleweed Conn. Band)
Little Feat with Lowell George (mostly Richie Hayward and Bill Payne)
The Strawbs, Dave Cousins, John Hawken
Fleetwood Mac before Lindsay and Stevie, spoke with Bob Welch, Mick Fleetwood (funny) and Christine McVie. John McVie doesn't talk much
Taj Mahal
Colin Cooper and The Climax Blues Band
Nils Lofgren
The guys in Golden Earring (didn't understand but a word they said) they sing in English great, but speak it? Not back then.
The guys in Nektar (spoke no English, so I guess a handshake and a smile was all I can claim).
Gentle Giant. I may have interviewed these guys on my show, but I just don't remember.
Proctor and Bergmann (half of The Firesign Theater) I may have interviewed one of these guys, but I don't remember which)
Roy Buchanan (dec.) A very troubled guy.
There were others but I don't remember talking at any significant length with them. Montrose with Sammy did a show for us, Roxy Music, Bruce Springstein, Tom Rush, Lindisfarne, The Sensational Alex Harvey Band, Trapeze, Jerry Jeff Walker, The Tubes, Savoy Brown, T. Rex, Kingfish (Bob Weir), Martin Mull, Ace, Caravan (whose album "Cunning Stunts" was a dangerous back announce if your state was altered) Status Quo, Al Stewart and probably a couple dozen more ... most of these bands are no longer around, but some of them clearly became well known. Imagine seeing them when they were unknowns for a couple of bucks. Wish I had the foresight to take pictures. Just hanging around during the sound check and watching from backstage during the show was a blast. Except being around when Bonnie Raitt was in a bad mood during the sound check. Oy! What a mouth!!

So my take on chatting with rock and roll stars ... they're just like most of us. Especially back then when most of the folks I met were on the way up. What they are like after they've made it, well, that's not something I have a lot of data on. I did some post production video for Al Kooper. He was nice enough to talk with, perhaps a little impatient for me to complete the free work I did for him. Anton Fig is pleasant in conversation as is Brian Auger. Graham Lear, 12 year veteran of Santana (drums), REO, Gino Vanelli, Patrick Lamb, Paul Anka still has a place in PDX. Had beers with him at many gigs. He knows a lot of musicians and I've spoken with him over beers many times when he played around town with Gary Small back in the nineties. Our own Curtis Salgado is good at conversation. Met him several times over breakfast in SE.

OK. I'll shut up and go away now. Thanks for the opportunity to wrack my brain. It was fun.

"I'll Never Smoke Weed With Willie Again"

I always heard that his herb was top shelf
I just could not wait to find out for myself
Don't knock it til' you tried it, Well I tried it my friend
And I'll never smoke weed with Willie again

I learned a hard lesson in a small Texas town
He fired up a fat boy and passed him around
The last words that I spoke before they tucked me in
Was I'll never smoke weed with Willie again

I'll never smoke weed with Willie again
My parties all over before it begins
You can pour me some old whiskey river my friend
But I'll never smoke weed with Willie again

I hopped on his old bus, the Honey Suckle Rose
The party was Vegas it was after the show.
Alone in the front lounge with just me and him,
With one parting puff grim creeper set in.

I'll never smoke weed with Willie again
My parties all over before it begins
You can pour me some old whiskey river my friend
But I'll never smoke weed with Willie again

Now we're passing the guitar and telling good jokes
I know ones a-comin' cause I'm smelling smoke
No I do not partake, I just let it pass by
With a smile on my face and a great contact high

I'll never smoke weed with Willie again
My parties all over before it begins
You can pour me some old whiskey river my friend
But I'll never smoke weed with Willie again

In the fetal position with drool on my chin
I messed up and smoked weed with Willie again

I'd have the beer, I'm not sure they would, or should, but anyhow, these guys:
1. Brian Wilson
2. Lindsey Buckingham
3. Lowell George (i know, he's dead)
4. John Lennon (ditto)
5. Neil Finn

Honorable mention: Springsteen, Matthew Sweet, Arthur Brown ("FIRE"), Hendrix, and yes, Carly Simon.

And many others...
