This afternoon, I saw a major blunder on KPTV's 4 o'clock news. The report centered on the acquittal of a Lake Oswego swimming coach, Don King on sex abuse charges. King was found NOT GUILTY of sex abuse charges. But when the anchor introduced the piece on the King acquittal, KPTV showed a picture of boxing promoter Don King – the wrong Don King. Someone at KPTV really screwed up.

Don King hasn't been in the news for a while, and the producer and/or technical staff probably don't have any knowledge of anything or anyone that happened before 2002. (Ok, I know that makes me sound old -- but I'm only 33).
One time I actually called into a student radio station to tell the DJ how to pronounced INXS. He had called them, "IN-ex." And recently, a professional DJ confessed on the air that she didn't know how to pronounce "Beowulf." She probably also doesn't realize that it's not a video game, but a piece of classic literature.
As frustrating as that type of ignorance is, we all make mistakes. I have had my share of listeners call in to correct me, and I'm grateful for it. Even if it was annoying at the time...

It may stick up high above his head, but at least boxing promoter Don King's hair otherwise looks normal, unlike those little dolls with bright pink or blue hair you see on top of pencils.

KPTV seems to screw-up a lot... particularly in the captions and crawler slugs for the news stories. Lots of misspellings and such. Doesn't anyone (competent) proofread that stuff before it hits air?

That would be "Kindergarten."

A "Kinder-garden" is just a very nice garden.

Well if you are German its Kindergarten. If you live in America its Kindergarden. So you would be right if I worked for a TV station in The Federal Republic of Germany.

I got news for you, I see signboards at elementary schools all the time that spell it Kindergarden, so go argue with them. These signboards I see are at Elementary Schools where I have worked for 16 years.

Although I will admit that as I speak the spell check , the super sensitive pdxradio spell checker is giving me an error on the kindergarden vs the kindergarten. But then as we all know the spell checker on this system often times errors a correctly spelled word.

For what it is worth, Wikipedia redirects "kindergarden" to "kindergarten" :

http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Kindergarden&redirect=no

This spelling (with the "t") was unknown to me before this thread. I guess one can learn something new everyday :-)

"Well if you are German its Kindergarten. If you live in America its Kindergarden."

Sorry, the word is "Kindergarten." Those signboards are wrong. If you want to spell "garten" as "garden," then you would spell "kinder" as "children's." Kindergarten: Children's Garden.

Ya its German.Kinder= Children, Garten= Garden or a place where children play and learn.

Well its one of those 'Idioms' of our language that we have been living with for a very long time. Someone( or people ) somewhere probably decided that the description of Kindergarten was too German so Kindergarden looked more American but saying Childrensgarden was non descriptive of a 'pre school' type childrens class in America but Kindergarden was and did describe such a place.

This might have happened when the 'Germans' allah Hitler and the Nazis became real unpopular people 'over here" in the 1930s and there might have been a movement away from that spelling for Political reasons, that would not surpise me.

Who knows...So then its TV Kindergarten...

I might research this on the net.See if I can find out if the spelling changed for a time in America and maybe England due to the Nazis and WW2.

Jr. Tech, that is why you just now learned about the original German spelling. I suspect it is because you have seen it spelled 'garden' instead of "garten" for many years in your life. And there is a reason for that.

The reason you see it kindergarden is because spelling has not been important in this country and people began misspelling it and it became acceptable. That does not make it correct. People on this forum spell things incorrectly and use the wrong words all the time and you all (who are supposed to be in the communications business) don't care.

It is dumbing down the language.
The correct word is kindergarten. It is even spelled that way in my Spanish-English and my French-English dictionaries. Of course, they were printed prior to 1975 when people still cared about correctness.

There is more to "this" in this particular case I think, than the "what else" your are describing above Jimbo.

For one thing Kindergarten is in reality a German word, which we all know of course. Now, how do 'we' handle foreign words? Do we just spell them the foreign way and use them in the context of our own language? Ok, maybe we do. And maybe sometimes we dont. I guess we might if the word just becomes part of the English language. Maybe kindergarten, spelled the German way, just became part of the English language in what 1970? or was it 1980 or 1990? or was it 1930? I dont know.

Kindergarten is probably not a good example of people ('us American pdxradio.com posters" in or associated with the communications media") misspelling words. We might want to use an example of a more original English language word that is commonly misspelled as an example of mispellings dumbing down our language.

I have not checked every dictionary for the correct spelling of this word. I have checked the 1974 edition of Funk & Wagnalls and it lists no other spelling of the word. This would agree with my own education. There are many words that are commonly misspelled or mispronounced and after a while, people begin to accept the misspelling. "Restrauteur" comes to mind. How about "pom pons"?

Just out of the blue, I asked my 17yo and 11yo how you spell "kindergarten". With no prep, they both answered correctly. Even though they pronounce it "garden", they both spelled it "garten". That is what they learned while going to school in Milton-Freewater and LaGrande. The younger one picked that up in Portland. It should not be different in Tri-Cities.

That spelling did not start around 1970, either. It has always been that. If I asked my American grandparents how to spell it, they would have also spelled it "garten".

Just because current society changes and modifies things to modern ways does not make it correct.
