This afternoon, I saw a major blunder on KPTV's 4 o'clock news. The report centered on the acquittal of a Lake Oswego swimming coach, Don King on sex abuse charges. King was found NOT GUILTY of sex abuse charges. But when the anchor introduced the piece on the King acquittal, KPTV showed a picture of boxing promoter Don King – the wrong Don King. Someone at KPTV really screwed up. |

Don King hasn't been in the news for a while, and the producer and/or technical staff probably don't have any knowledge of anything or anyone that happened before 2002. (Ok, I know that makes me sound old -- but I'm only 33). |

I wonder if his hair would hold up with all of the chemicals from the swimming pool. |

Thats what you get when some 20 something googles up a name or hits an archive data base and doesnt look any further than the end of his/her nose. |

It may stick up high above his head, but at least boxing promoter Don King's hair otherwise looks normal, unlike those little dolls with bright pink or blue hair you see on top of pencils. |

KPTV seems to screw-up a lot... particularly in the captions and crawler slugs for the news stories. Lots of misspellings and such. Doesn't anyone (competent) proofread that stuff before it hits air? |

Well if you are German its Kindergarten. If you live in America its Kindergarden. So you would be right if I worked for a TV station in The Federal Republic of Germany. |

For what it is worth, Wikipedia redirects "kindergarden" to "kindergarten" : |

The reason you see it kindergarden is because spelling has not been important in this country and people began misspelling it and it became acceptable. That does not make it correct. People on this forum spell things incorrectly and use the wrong words all the time and you all (who are supposed to be in the communications business) don't care. |

There is more to "this" in this particular case I think, than the "what else" your are describing above Jimbo. |

I have not checked every dictionary for the correct spelling of this word. I have checked the 1974 edition of Funk & Wagnalls and it lists no other spelling of the word. This would agree with my own education. There are many words that are commonly misspelled or mispronounced and after a while, people begin to accept the misspelling. "Restrauteur" comes to mind. How about "pom pons"? |

Just out of the blue, I asked my 17yo and 11yo how you spell "kindergarten". With no prep, they both answered correctly. Even though they pronounce it "garden", they both spelled it "garten". That is what they learned while going to school in Milton-Freewater and LaGrande. The younger one picked that up in Portland. It should not be different in Tri-Cities. |
