Well he served in Vietnam, where it was common to confuse the Viet Cong and the NVA and the occassional Chinese, and his dad served in Korea where there were Chinese and N Koreans, and his Granddad served in WWIi where there were Japanese, Germans, Italians, and even some french and dutch in the Waffen SS.
So it's not uncommon to confuse the enemy, just so you know who to kill, is all that matters.
