What a TERRIBLE thing to do! This from KOIN:

PORTLAND - The employees at KXL radio may be a bit shaken Friday afternoon after an angry listener crashes his car into the office.

It happened just after 1 p.m. at the offices on Southwest Bancroft Street.

Preliminary reports say the driver intentionally backed his car into the offices because he was unhappy with the station's morning radio broadcast.
No one was injured, but the suspect is still on the loose.

I just heard on KOIN news that some whacko backed his car up to the door at KXL then hit the gas and drove into the lobby!

I guess from the report he then drove off!

They arrested him in Vancouver and are sending him for a mental evaluation.

Fortunately, no one at the station was hurt, but he made a big mess!

Eastwood is correct. This was done to Jammin' 95.5. The story led the KOIN 6PM News. Police have the Vancouver man. Koin even interviewed the man (Ranting) before police arrested him. I'd watch the 11:00pm News on KOIN tonight. They seen to have the most coverage. KATU & KGW were very brief. This from the KATU:

"According to P.K., one of the morning radio show personalities at the station, KXL had been receiving threats from a particular person for a number of years."

Read the story and see pictures from KATU:

This from All Access:

---------------------Car Assaults Jammin's PlayHouse---------------------

A not-so-funny thing happened to the offices and studios of ROSE CITY RADIO Talk KXL-A and Top 40/Rhythmic KXJM (JAMMIN' 95-5)/PORTLAND: At around 1p FRIDAY afternoon, a listener purposely backed his car into the station lobby, ramming through doors, walls and the front desk. News reports indicate the assailant was angry about something that was broadcast on one of the station's morning shows.

Although KOIN-TV's website reports that it was a KXL listener, KXJM morning host PK believes it was his PlayHouse morning show. "We have evidence and reason to believe it's a listener who has been threatening us for the last five years," PK told ALL ACCESS. "I don't really know what we said today, but he must not have found it funny."

Fortunately, no one was injured. The assailant is still on the loose.

Insider info: this was a sick puppy who got upset about something the Jammin morning show did six years ago, which nobody on the show can remember, and has bugged them ever since. Even got in and ran around the station once. History of threatening e-mails. Has nothing to do with KXL. Guy's being held. Hopefully he'll get the help he needs, and hopefully, other local stations will have a look around their security.

Check the audio on Lars' web site. He interviews Leann about an hour after the incident.

http://www.larslarson.com/

She's understandably very shaken up. She's not the one he was angry at, yet she was in serious danger. That's somebody's daughter, somebody's girlfriend.

The way that place is designed made it easy for this sick bastard to drive straight into the lobby and out again. I bet some posts go up.

Oregon has a flight rule, when defending yourself, if you can leave the area is safety, you may not use deadly force to defend yourself.

If someone in the lobby with a conceled weapons permit, had felt endangered, and had no way to leave safely, they could have fired, but once the vehicle started driving away, you could not fire, if you did, you could be charged.

In the five years I did Conservative Talk Radio I received 3 threats of harm, one paint can, two slashed tires and an envelope with my name on it with a tiny baggy of meth stuck in my mailbox.

In the 22 years of doing music radio I have had 3 blondes, a brunette and 2 redheads stalk me. Can you say PLAY MISTY FOR ME?

But never something as dangerous as a car running through the office. Good Lord man, someone could have been killed.

Once during the height of the spotted owl vs. logging period, I, being the morning guy in a logging town, made a dumb joke on my show about loggers.
There was a bumper sticker going around that said "save a logger, eat an owl" so I said, "save an owl eat a logger.....or his wife".
Got two tire slashed and one bullet hole in my gas tank. Luckily none of it happened whilst I was driving.
So, this incident brings back memories of WHY WE DO LIVE RADIO!! The nutjobs!!

So, like, this incident is getting national play. Which is to be expected. The "Fishwrapper" totally underplayed it today...three column inches in the Metro section. Memo to the O: this isn't yet another case of Grandma in her Taurus hitting the gas instead of the brake. It's attempted murder.

Anyway. North Carolina TV:

Here's a truth about radio: of all the mass media--and if you're on a big station, you truly are mass media--we are by far the most accessible. We're live, some of us. We answer our own phones, reply to our own e-mail. Listeners feel like they have a personal relationship with us, because they do. Our studio locations are known, and they're unguarded. It's a one-in-a billion thing, or something, but it happens. Particularly if you're controversial. Just google Alan Berg.

Boy, all of this really takes me to many many times when I was in what easily could have been very dangerous situations, especially with my mouth!
Anyone ever seen where KRCO in Prineville is located? Imagine going there at 5 in the morning or leaving after midnight.
I know the big city is probably a scarier proposition but I don't think size is the issue, the crazies listening are. Alan Berg is MORE than a memory to me. If you were in radio at that time, you never forget about it.
Heck, an old timer back in the 1970's MADE me watch "Play Misty for Me" to "teach me what I was up against"! LOL!

Dodger makes an excellent point, and I amend my remark that if you're on a "big station," you're mass media. If you're on any station at all, you're part of the celestial umbrella of electronic stardust, and those who love you, or hate you, find it remarkably easy to touch you. Take care, kids.

Most of the time I had a positive response from listeners either at a remote or an event, whatever. But a few times it was creepy over the 21 years on the air here in the Tri Cities. For nine years I was on one of the stations that was number 1 for almost all that time, a CHR or Hot AC during those years.

The worst one that ever happened to me was in Medford, Ore (1979) @ KYJC in their very old bulding/transmitter site on Barnett Road, when someone came in through the transmitter room door one friday night, which was open and I dont know why...And was peering at me through the equipment racks while I had the mic switch open, no less. I caught some movement out of the corner of my eye and looked over that way. My train of thought staggered and what ever 'bit ' i was doing got truncated real fast. I popped up and had a few words with this 'person'...who again was 'juiced to the gills', but meant no harm to me or the station ...I locked the door, and every shift there after , checked the door...

The Oldies listeners that turned to AM960/ KALE were much more mannerly and more mature, of course. Always good feelings from those people, very few negatives. One oldies " hot button issue " i got after moving to FM some years later was ' Why are you still the NEW CHERRY FM??? Good question especially after 4.5 years of being the NEW CHERRY FM..it made a lot of normally peaceful respectful people M A D and I dont blame them.

I used to get 12 yr old kids knocking on my front door asking me for free music CDs on Sunday morning and that kind of thing, lots of times at the behest of their parents. A little creepy, but not too bad. Mostly drunk people mouthing off in different places/venues or outside the station.

If I have this correct, a product that is "new and improved" can only be described as such for six months from introduction to market, according to the Federal Trade Commission. This covers foodstuffs and laundry detergent (among other such things), but does NOT apply to radio stations. The FCC has some say in that (as in *silence*)...

I heard a station some years ago down here hang onto "The NEW..." for two-and-a-half YEARS. Needless to say, some listeners lost faith in whatever else they claimed...

----------------------Update: Angry Listener Caught----------------------

Updating our story from FRIDAY (NET NEWS 4/14) about an angry listener crashing his car into the studios and offices of ROSE CITY RADIO Talk KXL-A and Top 40/Rhythmic KXJM (JAMMIN' 95-5)/PORTLAND: A 30-year-old assailant, ANDY CHUN, has been caught and is being held while undergoing psychiatric evaluation.

Apparently, CHUN was upset with KXJM's morning show, THE PLAYHOUSE, and has been reportedly sending threatening e-mails since 2003. A rambling e-mail was sent to THE PLAYHOUSE on WEDNESDAY (3/5).

PLAYHOUSE host P.K. told ALL ACCESS, "The crazy thing is that he is mad because I hung up on him back in 2003 as he was trying to do a shout-out."

He was evidently on the phone with some female caller doing the phone sex thing and got busted by the boyfried/husband who picked up an extension and heard what was going on. The cuckold wannabe gets angry and threatens to kick the overnight guy's ass. The overnighter says go ahead and come down to the station and try.

A few minutes later the overnight jock gets a call from the jealous man who informs the jock he's waiting out back. Sooo...said overnight jock, who will henceforth be referred to as "dumbass", leaves the studio, exits the station, walks down the hall, and unlocks the mall door. Dumbass then informs the guy that he'll be out in a minute, but that he has to get back into the studio because his song is running out. He turns his back on the guy and goes trotting back into the station leaving the mall and station door wide open.

The man was not content to wait outside when he could kick the crap out of dumbass in the warmth and comfort of the station lobby, so that's what he did. Along with beating the hell out of dumbass, he also effectively trashed the front office as he pinballed the jock off of the walls, desk, furniture, and file cabinets.

The jock was fired later that afternoon.

Not a large IQ present on the face of this story. Dumbass mustah had a great set of pipes and an excess of testosterone to match.

"I heard a station some years ago down here hang onto "The NEW..." for two-and-a-half YEARS. Needless to say, some listeners lost faith in whatever else they claimed..."

I swear I heard "The new 99-5, The Wolf" less than a month ago on KWJJ! WTF?! It was early 2004, that "The Wolf" was born.
