What is the best concert you've seen live, or what concert disappointed you?? Some artists sound so great on the CD, and then you see them live and they sound like shit!

I once saw Henry Fonda do a one man show, "Clarence Darrow" That was a great show, fairly small venue.

Best musical performance, the Carpenters in Denver around 1975.

2nd best Chuck Berry at an open air show in northern colorado in 74 I think.

Best concert I've seen live ... wow, so many come to mind.

Rush of course is at the top of the list ... they are just so incredible. But the best show I've seen live musically was Boston at The Gorge in 1995. Truly amazing.

Worst has to be Heart, also at The Gorge, in 1993 ... not sure if they had equipment issues or they just weren't into it but it was very disappointing. Glad I didn't have to pay for the tickets! Also bad was Slaughter and Winger in Rapid City in 1990. Winger had all sorts of equipment issues, and Slaughter just sucked. They were fronting KISS, who rocked the house down. Total contrast.

Best concert by far that I've seen is Bob Seger. I've seen him 3 times, 1980, 1987 and 2007. Every show was exceptional.

Worst concert, to put it in context, as good as Seger was, Wishbone Ash was that much worse!

They sound fine on their albums, but they sucked big time live!

Best Concert: Stan Kenton, 1974, South Eugene High School. Progressive big band sound, in person! I still get the shivers thinking about it. During the break, my dad needed a smoke break, so we went out one of the exit doors in the side. And there he was! Stan Kenton himself, taking a smoke break! My dad was thrilled as a teenager! He told Mr. Kenton he first heard his band in San Diego during the war, and they spent 20 minutes talking about those good old days.

Worst Concert: Jesse Colin Young, late 1990's, Crystal Ballroom. The Oregonian ad and our tickets said "Jesse Colin Young, with special guest". The special guest was a karaoke box. He sucked, sucked, I tell you!

Especially Ozzy.

How can the man sing when he can't even talk anymore? Marble-mouth.

The worst "concert" was Three Dog Night in the late 60s. The drummer kept falling off his stool he was so wasted.

All was not lost because Ike & Tina were the warm-up act. Tina was fantastic!

Best: PRINCE
Have seen him live several times during the past twenty years at different phases thru his career and have to say the "Musicology" tour from 2004 was superior.

2nd best: Earth, Wind and Fire- Philip Bailey has still got that incredible falsetto.

Oh oh - I know this kind of doesn't count, but it's all I got because the shittiness of the show will never be topped;

Worst - I saw Dennis Miller at The Chiles Center in the mid to late 80's. He was terrible. Unfunny and morose in his delivery. Barely audible as he was mumbling and obviously didn't want to be there.

Best - Hmmm. Depends on the criteria. Favorite? Queen in 1980. First concert. Favortie band.

Best actual show - Paul McCartney about 8 years ago or so. He's a Beatle. Hearing him play those songs was a moment and a half. Flawless sound.

Most surprised by a performer - James Angell. Local artist who played a surprised show at Slabtown a few years ago. There were a bunch of celebrities in the audience and I was only there because his sister invited me to the show. I hadn't even heard of him. Turns out it was a showcase as there was a bidding war going on between some big names. Bowie was there, the singer from The Tragically Hip ( another favorite band of mine - they sell out arenas in Canada - can't get arrested in The States ) and John Taylor from Duran Duran were there.

Most stoned - Rush - Signals.

Most drunk - Ben Folds Five.

Hey CJ, I saw James Angell play at Lola's beneath the Crystal Ballroom, with John Taylor from Duran/Duran, they were awesome! Their opening act was (local boys) Menomena, one of the worst bands ever I've ever seen...I don't get the hype on them at all.

Best shows besides Grateful Dead (300+ times)?
Probably Tom Petty also

Best and Worst by same artist: Bob Dylan

I've read stories and seen pics from that show, Merkin. I think James was really at a peak then. Sonce then, however, tougher times for him. I play almost his entire album on my station and invariably get emails asking about that artist.

He's got a new one in the can, supposedly. But is in no shape to promote it or something. Not good.

Take 6 in their early days. Sat three rows back dead center. I had seen loads of glitzy rock and pop shows over the years but here were 6 guys and their voices only. Just great talent doing what they do best.

Cool moment during the concert, the lead tenor walks out during one of their more popular songs and holds a mic out to a white guy in the front row and this guy was able to sing as good as the guys in the band. It was really impressive.

Plus the guys had great stage presence and were pretty funny too.

Every other concert I have seen still hasn't beaten that gig.

Oh and being in radio, even though I voice track, I still can get free tickets. I don't think I've paid for a concert in 25 years.

Best national or known act seen live was Peter Frampton on his Frampton Comes Alive II tour at the Strand Theatre in Providence, RI.

Best local act seen live would be Patrick Lamb at the now defunct Lefty's Blues Club in Salem.

Saw a good coverband this weekend at Big Shots in Salem. The Heathens a Sublime tribute band. Pretty darned good for a bar thats not set up for bands. The guy I talked to said they were playing May 5th again at Big Shots. I had a good time so I will go again.

Shyguy, I agree, Patrick Lamb is fantastic. He did a benefit concert at our church and I had the pleasure of mixing for him. They were going to bring in their own sound system, but when he saw ours, he decided that he'd rather use it!! (We just put a new system in over the summer)

Patrick performs quite often at Jimmy Maks. In fact he'll be there on 25-JUL with GC Cameron, one of the former lead singers for the Temptations.

He was just in New Orleans ding a Ray Charles tribute show.

Here are some links to his stuff;

There are some great local bands and talented musicians. We are blessed to have two former national and international finger picking champions in our midst. John Standefer and Doug Smith both of Vancouver. What these two guys do on acoustic guitars is heavenly. Saw them both in concert together late last year. Knocked my socks off.

I agree about Patrick Lamb. We got Tom Grant too and a truck load of bands, singers and other instrumentalist up and down the I-5 corridor from the border of Canada to southern Oregon.
