I understand it's a huge hit on the internet, but pretty much taboo on broadcast media.

Betcha it could be played on the talk shows. Would easily make bumpers. Maybe even get played in context.

Can't imagine it airing on music stations, but for maybe a specific focus segment on these kinds of things, for fun or a distraction. I'm thinking like the Viral Videos segments seen on TV.

The success of this and other songs like it on the internet just underscores how useless a medium broadcast radio has become. Radio programming has become inbred, controlled by big money interests, and supported by big money clients many of whom are owned by the big banks whom are owned by guess who, foreign interests.

I loved the song.

...I got distracted by the Britney Spears Nude link on the side...

Not so sure I'd admit to that!!!!!

I'm not a big fan of country music, but that song is actually OK.

I especially like the message!

That being said, I would never presume to tell someone they couldn't speak their native tongue when they are with family or friends, but if you are going to deal with the American public, learn and speak English.

I'm open minded enough that when I see a song that highlights someone's ignorance I can say they suck as does their music.

The problem is that there is no federal statute that defines English as an official language. English is a de-facto standard. Municipalities, counties, etc. are free to pass laws declaring the official language to be used for legal documents, government-posted signs, etc.

This is a novelty song, and it would get old pretty fast if it were put into rotation at a music station.

Sort of like "I Was Born In East LA".

You'd probably start a war with that one in the southern states!

I think language legislation is pretty silly.

Norms govern these things far more than laws do. Either English remains effective or it doesn't. It will be people inertia that settles this, not any laws.

Personally, I think we've been spoiled. In many parts of the world, multi-lingual exposure is common. It's not all that big of a deal.

Think of this too.

Want English to have the dominance it once did? Quit outsourcing every thing we know how to do. With huge numbers of products being made in other parts of the world, and such an emphasis on cost, multi-lingual packaging is now common.

That makes it significantly easier for those immigrating here to continue to use their native language. Lots of forces in play right now that will impact this.

IMHO, the song has it's best shot at being played once in a while, kind of a signature tune.

I have only been able to listen to the song partway through because I am in the office, and I didn't bring in my headphones today. What I got out of the beginning of the song is that the artist is looking at this as an issue of cultural pride and cultural identity. This, in my opinion, is not the place for laws to be defining things.

The places where I think that might be appropriate for the law to go into the realm of specifying a language are very specific scenarios that have to do with communication in a public context. I would consider the following appropriate:

* A city law declaring that English is the official language for the recording of city laws and for internal business dealings at city hall.

* A law stating that textual warning messages/signs in public places must, at least, contain the warning message in English. (In other words, a warning sign containing English and Spanish text would be OK, but one with Spanish only text would not be.)

* Making English language classes a required part of a public school curriculum.

I think the woman singing the song should learn to pronounce "language" not "langweej" and "English" not "Engleesh".
