In YOUR opinion, what is the greatest rock band EVER!!!
I know its tough to pick just one band, but DO IT! What is the greatest rock band EVER and why are they the greatest rock band ever?

Im gonna have to go with Guns N Roses. They are probably my favorite band of all time. Their songs ROCKED, they were extremely talented and they always Wrote all of their own music(except a few cover songs) Watching their video's on MTV back in the 80's and early 90's made me want to start a rock band. They were the epitome of cool, and they broke up right at their creative peak. Yes Axl Rose was an ass hole, BUT Im judging on the quality of music, not how big their egos were.

Speaking of Covers, Im sorry but GNR's cover of "knockin on heavens door was waaaaaay better than Bob Dylan's version.

Duh. Grateful Dead.

Jerry's "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" was waaaay better then Dylan's and GNR's. Their "All Along The Watchtower" was smokin' too.

Justin - I would have loved to see what GnR could have done had Axl not imploded the band ... you're right, they were insanely talented, had an attitude and edge ... heck, they dealt hair metal a death blow.

The Use Your Illusion albums were among the best ever ... well thought-out and put together. And is there a better debut album EVER than Appetite For Destruction?

Missing, you beat me to it.

With out any doubt, it has to be Creedence Clearwater Revival!

They are quite possibly the most perfect band that ever was.

Edit add:

A short history on how the group came up with their name from Wikipedia;

A much more positive event occurred in 1967 when Saul Zaentz purchased Fantasy Records from Weiss and offered the band a chance to record a full-length album, but only if the group changed its name. Never having liked The Golliwogs, the foursome readily agreed. Zaentz and the band agreed to come up with ten suggestions each, but he enthusiastically agreed to their first: Creedence Clearwater Revival. The band took the three elements from Creedence Nuball, a friend of Tom Fogerty; "clear water", from a TV commercial for Olympia beer; and revival, which spoke to the four members' renewed commitment to their band. (Other contenders were Muddy Rabbit, Gossamer Wump, and Creedence Nuball and the Ruby.)

Guns and Roses did break up at their creative peak, which is why I think it was good that they broke up when they did. How many great bands that once put out amazing albums, have ran out of material and are now putting out CRAP??? Quite a few, thats why I think If GNR were still putting out albums today they would not be very good. I LOVED GNR but Im glad they broke up when they did.Plus Ive heard that the new album Chinese Democracy that should be out soon, is only average at best. I've heard one of the tracks that was leaked onto the internet and it was OK, but nothing that made me salivate like their previous records.

I can listen to Pink Floyd forever and while Sammy is my favorite Entertainer, Pink Floyd is quite simply the greatest group to ever walk the face of the Earth! Sammy has always stood out to me as more of a great soloist with awesome backup. He can jam with any pairing with his vocal's and guitar. Pink Floyd, is the best group there ever was and ever will be! Honorable mention to the Scorpions though, especially this "New Generation" Scorpions! They seem to be in tune with "Humanity"!

Yup that is true about Sammy, and HE has one hell of a voice. The guy can sing. I think Diamond Daves voice has ALWAYS been PALE compared to sammys. Even if you didn't like the Van Hagar era, you have to admit he has MUCH better vocals than Diamond Dave.
You take ANY van halen song, and its quite apparent that Sammy was a much better singer.
As far as the New Scorpions, words cant describe how awesome their new album is. "Humanity HOUR 1" RULES!!
I read an article from a critic who was reviewing the new Scorpions album , she loved the album and gave it 5 stars, and then started talking about RADIO and she said the best quote about the Scorpions new album she said "Radio needs the scorpions more than the Scorpions need radio". Which is DAMN TRUE! But, I still hope that "Humanity hour 1" gets more airplay.

Pink Floyd here.

But seriously, we're all leaving out the big elephant in the room whom had never existed, we'd ALL be humming Pat Boone tunes -- The Beatles.

(Feel free to correct my grammar -- is it who or whom? I've a test next week. :-) )

It is generally considered that The Beatles and subsequent British Invasion saved rock-n-roll from being a mere footnote in the history books! Whatever latter-day music you enjoy just wouldn't be the same if not for their contribution.

Semoochie makes a great point.

However, I would assert that the Beatles are not nearly as popular without being propelled and inspired by a movement far more important, far broader and far more revolutionary than the British Invasion: Motown.

Look at 'em up there on the shelf. Every band worth a hoot from England -- Stones, Beatles, Kinks, Who, etc. -- did Motown covers on their records and in concert. So, I still say the greatest band ever is The Funk Brothers. :0)

Come on, the Beatles changed everything. Just look at rock before they came to America in 1964 and after. True, they hardly did it alone - Mr. Bob Dylan certainly had quite a bit to do with the emergence of modern Rock in the mid-60s - but before the Beatles, Dylan was still doing folk music. They inspired each other.

Motown was just one of many American influences on the Beatles, Stones, etc. But it was the Beatles who put it all together into mainstream music (because they were white?). Part of it was their image, not just their music. But their image allowed mainstream acceptance, which allowed them and other bands to push the envelope with their music as well.

Rock in America in 1964 was and still is vastly underestimated by Beatles fans. I absolutely love the Fab Four. However, they were playing our music.

You cannot discount huge American stars like Chuck Berry, the Everly Brothers, the Beach Boys, Roy Orbison, Johnny Cash, Roger Miller, and the huge talents involved with Motown, Atlantic, Sun, Chess and others. Not to mention the hits generated by monster artists in the hands of freelancers like Phil Spector, Snuff Garrett and Lee Hazlewood.

The Funk Brothers, along with the Wrecking Crew, Booker T & the MGs, Muscle Shoals and others shaped rock music more than the Beatles. The Beatles were a conduit for a great deal of energy, and made a huge impact from songwriting to recording methods, but they were not the greatest. Their live performances were, to be kind, rather inconsistent.

Listen to Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder or the Supremes live recordings, and you might be more inclined to agree with me about The Funk Brothers.

IMHO, of course. :0)

They are as much a "band" as Leon Russell, Carole King, or the other King. Was it Bob or Doug McKenzie who once said "I am a band"?

As a semi-serious vote, how 'bout the Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields, conducted by Neville Marriner?
