Would win today 53 to 36 over McCain. WOW! Looks good for Obama.
With Nader running it looks like McCain would get even less so like 53 to 25??? My guy is doomed!

I believe those numbers to be wildly optimistic for a network that continues to race-bait, lie and spread disinformation about Obama. I am not sure that one poll, or the addition of a few new reporters means that Fox will suddenly be engaged in real journalism.

Roger Ailes is aware that the position of Fox had better swing toward the center if they want to sell any advertising, but I think the damage has already been done. They put all their chips on the gamble that we would be forever dominated by infotainment with a divisive and corrosive outlook.

Public perception is hard to change and Fox is the shrill right-wing version of National Inquirer to most Americans. CNN is absolutely crushing them in many crucial time slots, and MSNBC is not that far behind. It will be interesting to see the MSM jockeying for position when all outlets have so little reputation left.

I haven't tuned in CNN lately, but in my mind it is the place for infotainment with a Hollywood outlook. I don't need to know whether Anna Nicole is still dead or not.

(Okay, I'll admit I had to go to Google to find out "MSM" means MainStream Media.)

As much as I'd like to think the general public is finally waking up while we still have a chance to salvage the democracy, the margins are still tight in the polls as to whether we will end up with a "Bush III" (as Vitalogy would put it) in the Whitehouse.

My son can NOT let go of the fact that the CNN logo that is docked in the bottom left corner of the screen is C N N - but the two N's are slightly mashed together. He thinks it's C I M or something.

My son is 32.

I'm in trouble, huh?

IMHO, MSM is too much credit.

I know a *lot* of people now getting their primary info online. The constant stream of non-stories and serious mangling of real stories is taking it's toll. Bloggers have filled an important gap --a gap made by the traditional media itself!

That gap is just presenting lots of views, aggressive fact checking and critique.

Internet publishing is a freaking mess. Everybody who wants to publish can! What's interesting is the evolution of it all.

Where we used to have editors filtering stuff, we've now got reputation and critique doing the same. Post up garbage? Get called on it.

That's totally American, IMHO. Perfect check and balance.

Post up solid analysis? Build your online rep. The bigger that gets, the greater the incentive to keep the ball rolling.

It's fairly easy these days to find that solid commentary --and you can find it on damn near anything!

The only real problem is people self-selecting and not understanding how to think critically. That will pass however.

Mainstream may well still apply right now, but it won't for too much longer. At that point, the word traditional will apply better than mainstream will.

One other very interesting dynamic is in play too. Most new-school internet publishers allow commentary and they allow it right there with their published work. Either it stands or it doesn't, and that's really great!

Notice how the MSM "blogs" sharply limit that stuff, leverage polls and other devices to limit that dynamic?

I do.

IMHO, that's because they are used to having some entitlement and with that some authority. Challenges to that are very difficult for them and their heirachy to deal with.

What editor wants to publish and have it all called on the carpet that day?

On the other hand, what citizen publisher doesn't want that?

Finally, those of us engaging in online conversations matter now. Right here on PDX Radio, you can find the news bits of the day often well covered, with many perspectives that generally highlight the spin and offer analysis.

--and that's just people talking to pass the time!
