I'm almost looking forward to the left getting their way for a while: It will help Americans remember why Mr. Bush won back-to-back victories against the left.

We could also use some significant gridlock for a while.

Herb the founding fathers would find that statement repulsive, as do I. This is my biggest gripe with your political stance. No progress is the best.

No, it's like I'm saying:

'Be careful of what you wish for, liberals. I f you regain the white house, we'll see how well YOU fight terror, keep our nation safe, free and defend the most innocent among us.'

Mr. Clinton's track record of selling defense secrets, pardoning Marc Rich, killing Branch Davidians and sending Elian Gonzalez to a commie haven are hardly lofty achievements.

I'm just bitchy tonight with a Frackin' head cold! But is does get old. I mean really it is a pretty static group of regular's and I think we get were everyone is on certain topic's, why do they have to fuck up every thread all of the time? Come up with something original or actually engage in a conversation on the topic including straight answers to straight questions. We could be discussing favorite vacation spots and up will come "Do you know they have 7 abortion clinics there" or some other crap not relevant to the thread. And yes, I will post off topic crap in threads to so I am guilty but my off topic is usually to derail it or just trying to add levity to a grim thread.

After 8 years of Bush, two recessions, limited growth in the markets, increased poverty levels, more without health care, minimal job growth, two wars, record deficits, and one major terrorist attack, I'm quite confident that either of the Democratic nominees could easily outperform George W. Bush. It would take a monumental effort of magnificent proportions to out-suck GW.

DT I want to let you know how much I do appreciate your honest feedback on some of our threads.

Feeling like crap doesn't help. Sometimes we need to change our diets or add a different routine to our workouts to keep them fresh. It's like Herb is stuck in one gear and grinds it, which brings everything to a halt, which he loves. It means he has taken yet another thread and done what he wants done if the dems gain control....gridlock.

It's simply a lousy way to want your government to run. I also believe he is in the minority.

So DT I apologize that you have to put up with this but even on these types of threads others bring up important points like Vitalogy's recent post.

Get some rest bro...

One comment on this: While he did win the Electoral vote by a wide margin he only received 44% of the popular vote. This means 56% of Americans didn’t vote for him.

I'll STFU now!

No need to do that man, like I said i'm just bitchy. In some cases I am guilty of intruding on threads with off topic stuff. I think I will just completely avoid the Herb Threads all together in the future. Yes these are usually good threads if you can put up the the usual rhetoric from the usual rhetorical's! I just wish some people could stick to the spirit of the conversation at hand and not duck and dodge by brining up abortion, crappy approval rate of dem's, etc. etc. Carry on and don't mind me! I feel the need for some Cranberry Juice. Don't worry, straight up on the rocks!

Probably not going to happen no matter who's elected - you'll instead get bombarded with a broadcast/print/subliminal media campaign that you want to drive down 185th to ride MAX via. Willow Creek Transit Center; where your car can get broken into; you can be pestered, mugged, or worse by the indigents and/or gang members; and to top it off you'll get fined and/or excluded by fare inspectors because none of their ticket machines are working. (And this nugget of opinion is coming from a daily transit rider!)

Breaking news just in! Republicans blame Democrats and Democrats blame Republicans.
So, break the cycle - vote for someone who's not a Republican, Democrat, or has the last name of "Nader!"

If you really want to break the cycle, focusing on the Presidential vote isn't really all that good of an option.

Of the limited choices, somebody is gonna get elected. And those choices largely come from and are supported by the pool of existing legislators. That pool of legislators has a very high incumbency rate, leading to established interests forming and controlling to a higher degree than is probably healthy for us.

So, focus on primary politics.

If, for example, the Democrats are the party that more closely aligns with what you feel you need to see happening, as they run in their primary battles, support new blood in lieu of old, unless that does not make sense.

When the other party runs, support and make strong Democratic challengers. Some of those will win, and that's vital if the party is gonna be strong and be capable of change.

Getting this cycle running then also opens the door for independent representation. If the mechanics of strong primary challenges are in place, then some wins are gonna happen.

All it's gonna take is a few seats flipped, changed up. The incentive to better serve the people will then take hold to a greater degree and that's good for us period.

Over the longer haul, that greater churn in the system will yield more differentiated Presidential nominees and better support structure for them.

Finally then, some really great picks are gonna be made available.

Barring some huge reform, I really don't see it happening any other way. And the existing body of legislators has ZERO interest in said reforms.

Missing, I agree. That is why I'm a proponent of term limits.

I doubt it will ever happen though, I can't see any politician voting in a policy that ends their job after a certain time.

I firmly believe there should be no such thing as a career politician.

Ted Kennedy is a perfect example of why term limits are needed.

Term limits thwart the will of the voters. If Ted Kennedy did as bad a job as you think he does, he would not be continually elected.

Yep.

I'm not entirely sure term limits do any longer term good.

If we really start to focus on primary politics, we can elect people, who know they could easily get the boot, and they may well have the incentive to get some of the money outta the system.

If lobbyiests didn't have such access and dollars, those politicians may well find actually serving the public is easier. If so, then we have no problem with them doing exactly that right?

Just giving a few people the boot, and that's known bad politicians, will spread the word around. It's already a factor right now. Can only get better, IMHO.

I like Ted right where he is, BTW.

There are term limits on the President, why not on other elected officials? And don’t just say “Because it’s in the Constitution”.

Does the term limit on the President thwart the will of the voters?

It should be put up before the voters. We (the voters) should vote on an amendment to add term limits to ALL elected officials. If 50.1% vote yes then it would be the will of the voters.

At least 51% of the people in MA are morons! (I feel like a moron because I can’t spell it (MA) or even get it close enough for the spell checker to figure out what I want!)

Ted Kennedy is a drunken slob.

Skybill,

I think the 22nd Amendment was a knee-jerk reaction by the newly Republican 80th Congress in response to Democrat Roosevelt being elected four times. In retrospect, most see it as a poorly-considered move. Yes, I think that the 22nd Amendment thwarts the will of the voters, not allowing them to vote for who they think would make the best president simply because (s)he is constitutionally prohibited from running again.

I would LOVE to see another election with Bush as the Republican nominee. But at the same time, I don't think he would run - he's got to be looking forward to passing the mess he's made off to someone else ASAP.

I think career politicians end up turning it into a "Good Old Boys Club" and there is too much; I'll scratch your back, you scratch mine (which can be loosely translated into; You fill my pockets, I'll fill yours.)

It also leaves too much open for corporate cronies to buy the politicians. I'm not saying that couldn't happen in one or two terms too though.

I still think 2 terms and back to the private sector would be a better way to go. I won't be holding my breath for it to come about though!
