Jeff: No that's the frequency. I always do this now with any mention of KVAN. Otherwise it's confusing to readers if they don't know there were 3 KVAN's in the Portland market. Like this: "I didn't realize Freddie Flack & Willie Nelson worked at the same station." _________________________________________________________________ Matt Jones checked in and gives us some real nuggets as always: KAREN TRACY aka Karen Rose on KUFO. MICHAEL CONVERY aka Jeff Mckenna on KKSN-FM. PETER LETT aka Tim Peters on KMJK-FM. When the posts end on this thread, I will re-post the list with all Your additions, so keep them coming folks. I also realize you might not be a pdxradio poster. You can always E-Mail me the info. My E-Mail address is in my profile. Another thought, Traffic Reporters would be a good area to concentrate on since most report on multiple stations and might (or might have) used different names.

I assume we are only including names these people have used in the greater Portland/Vancouver/Salem market. Adam Fendrich of KKRH "Earth 105" was Terry Adams on KGON and KKSN-FM. Also I have posted an aircheck of Bill Van Lom on KPAM in August '78. The voice is very familiar to me but I can't come up with another name for him for certain. Could this be Robin Banks of KGON? (The aircheck was obtained from California Aircheck.)

He went by Gary Stevens at Phoenix's KRUX in 1972 as well. There was another Gary Stevens in the market that was the GM of Doubleday competitor KRIZ at about the same time. The Sunny Day-Jimmy Cassidy-Gary Stevens guy is still at it today as a programmer, as John Sebastian... Oh, Craig...Addie Bobkins also spent some time as a 10-Noon personality on KISN around 1964 or so...I had a red and white "Fabulous 50" survey with his picture on it at one time... And Kelly McCrae served some time with me at KWJJ...I believe he took over as music director when I left for OKC in 1989...

Mark: Somewhere I have an air check of Phoenix stations. I caught Gary Stevens on KRUX on his birthday talkin' up the Stones "Street Fighting Man". Couldn't imagine just 6 months later he'd be PD of KPAM-FM, or that I'd be attending radio classes he taught at the studios, or that his new bride from Phoenix, would be in my speech class in High School. It was all surreal.

That makes 3 Jeff Thomases! Perhaps, I can save Craig some grief: It took me a minute but decided that the first names on the list are the ones they're commonly known as, without listing any stations for that name so, for instance, KISN isn't listed for Addie Bobkins. Any additional names list the stations where they used those names.

Right! This project isn't about Personality Names we know. It's about Names they used before becoming the Personalities we know today, or are the Names we most remember them by. With that in mind, I decided doing a laundry list of stations these known Personalities have been through since their name change, would take away from the original idea of highlighting their early years, where some honed their skills.

Michael O'Brien was given the name by Burden, when he was sent from Indianapolis to KISN. He was using his real name on the air in Indy... Richard Kiley...also the name of the GM...no relation. Burden put the GM's feet to the fire saying I want him in Portland Monday doing the morning show...as Mike O'Brien. Later he adopted "Michael"...and even had his name changed legally. And now you know...the rest of the story.

Bwana had worked at KJR with Mike Phillips in 1968. When he returned in '75, PAT O'DAY named him Father Duffy for this go 'round. Who knows why? At KYYX, Pat remonikered Dan Packard as Freddy Chrysler, because he thought people would think he was from the Chrysler auto family. I said, "Pat...as Dan Packard they'll probably think he's from the Packard family." Pat's response, "Exactly...and they don't make Packards anymore."

"Kiley" is Irish. The funny thing is that he once told me his name was Michael James Anthony Kiley O'Brian, when mentioning his brother. You'd think Don Burden would object when he continued to use the name, particularly on KPAM, the same with Tom Michaels!

Original Cyn: See my Feb 20th post at 10:48pm. "Bubba" & Shaw have been added to the data base. Roger Hart checked in to answer my question on Tom Michaels. I'll let him explain: ____________________________________________________________________ "Tom Michaels started out on Kisn with 'NO' name. When Tom Murphy had to go to Texas for National Guard duties, we went in and recommended Tom Gurlitz, who was hired and touted as "Tom Murphy's friend", that's it. He was a talented type who'd hang out with us when I was at KEX, and Tom was roaring up the ratings charts at KISN. We'd all meet after midnight at Jolly Joans on Broadway, along with Red Robinson from KGW, before he returned to Canada. I ended up at Kisn with Tom, and we all lived happily ever after, and Tom moved in and up when we moved on." Roger Hart ____________________________________________________________________ So here's how we'll handle this: TOM MICHAELS aka "Tom Murphy's friend" on KISN

Jimbo checked in and remembers Johnny Dark using another name on KISN or maybe another station. I E-Mailed "Tiger" Tom Murphy about this: ______________________________________________________________ Hello Craig: Jimbo is right. Byron DID do all nights as Johnny Dark. At the same time, he was the Chief Engineer at KISN. Russ Ripley and Ben Dawson also did the over night show and were Chief Engineers at the same time. KISN was in a bit of a "Budget Crunch" at the time, 1960/'61 and having the all night guy also be the "Chief" cut out a salary. This situation was why I went from 7 to 1AM for about 3 years. The idea was that Russ, Ben and Byron would go to the transmitter to relieve evening newsman, Bill Howlett, at midnight and use that hour to do transmitter maintenance. They had to do the 12:30AM "Bannerlines" so that way Burden knew they were there, at least by 12:30AM. Here is kind of a fun story....One night I'm "Floggin' The Hits" and all of a sudden I hear what sounds like a control tower giving instructions to a plane that is landing. "You are 1500 feet above glide path" and similar stuff like that. It keeps up over the music and "me" while I'm on the air. Naturally I call out the transmitter to tell Byron something is terribly wrong. He says he'll check it out. Nothing for a while then it starts up again. I call again and after a few minutes, he tells me he is playing an Air Force Recruiting disk from the transmitter over the studio feed. Don't hear stuff like this happening anymore do we? "Tiger" Tom _________________________________________________________________ I had just received an earlier E-Mail from Tiger Tom about Tom Michaels names: ______________________________________________________________ Hello Craig: I enjoyed seeing Roger's post, regarding Tom Michaels, on pdxradio this morning. Let me add that he also went by "Murphy's Buddy." When I came back from Texas, Tom continued at KISN doing weekends. Burden wanted the entire weekend on KISN to be called "Wonderful Weekend" and it was listed that way in Pulse.Burden wouldn't let Tom say his name on "Wonderful Weekend", either. It was just "Wonderful Weekend On KISN." Tom always had a great sense of humor and asked me if I thought he should refer to himself as "The Spirit Of Wonderful Weekend." Of course I thought that was a GREAT idea. Tom did actually use "The Spirit Of Wonderful Weekend" but not too often and that took some "nerve" since we never knew when Burden might be listening. To add insult to injury, the full timers did use our names. I don't think Tom's tenure of being nameless lasted too long but I thought it was unfortunate that for months on KISN, he couldn't say he was on KISN. How about Tom Michaels (AKA Tom Murphy's Friend/Murphy's Buddy/ and The Spirt of Wonderful Weekend). You might want to think about not using the last one. "Tiger" Tom

While the following isn't in the same "League" name wise, when Mike came to KISN he had to use M.J. Phillips. The reason was, at the time, Mike Western was doing afternoon's and "they" didn't want two Mike's on the station, especially following each other on the air. Sometime, can't remember quite when, after Mike Western left M.J. became Mike Phillips. "Tiger"

Tom Franklin on KYTE (MOYL days), AKA Tom Moore on Classical KYTE-FM, AKA The Doctor on KB-101 in their final waning days prior to the launch of KRCK. He was Doc Holiday at KEED and KBDF in Eugene but I don't know if he used this name in Portland.

I always believed RICH BROTHER ROBBIN used RICHARD W ROBBIN at KISN, because he quickly segued from KISN to KASH where he used RICHARD W. However, RICHARD W ROBBIN was a name he had used in his hometown of St. Joseph, Missouri before KISN. At KISN, he was GARY MACK. Someone sent me a KISN survey with his picture with that name.

Before I joined KOL in April of 67, AL VANIK (KATU's voice-over guy) was Alan MacKenzie or Al Mack part-time on KOL...later he was Gary Mitchell at KING when they went top 40 with Johnny Mann acapellas.

440 is a great site, but Johnny Williams relies on the personality to fill in details. Many jocks just provide their stations. I've noted many discrepencies regarding years when jocks were on stations, too....sometimes skipping call-letters and extending their tenures. This can be verified through station music surveys.

Hmmm. I thought there was a Gary Mack but now I remember it was Gary Todd....I think. I met Al Vanik when we both worked part time at KTW in 1964. He also worked at KUUU and KAYO. Didn't he do news as Alan MacKenzie on KOL? He is down in Phoenix now still doing voiceovers.

Guys, I'm changing Tom Franklin as the MAIN name to Judge Ramsay, who I think is more well known to listeners. Any input on this change? The listing would look like this: JUDGE RAMSAY aka Tom Franklin on KYTE, aka Tom Moore on KYTE-FM, aka Doc Holiday on KB101.

Al Vanik DID spend time in Phoenix...Worked at KOY well before I came to the desert in 1991. Al was my image voice for KEBC in OKC in 1990 and '91, and worked from Scottsdale. Today he's still doing voiceovers from his home in Hawaii after leaving the desert somewhere around six years ago. Also, the personality formerly known as Judge Ramsey did time with me at KWJJ in the eighties...but I can't remember for the life of me what name he used!!! (Too much time in the desert sun, I guess...) If I could find Bobby Sherman somewhere in Colorado, HE'D be able to remember...

Let's go to the source. Bruce is that true? And if so, was it KPAM/KPFM or KPAM/KPAM-FM? Since ol' Barn was mentioned above, here's some "Barney Keep" trivia: Was at the library last night looking up KXL names in the Polk Directories (Yes, Barn worked for KXL first). In 1944 during WWII he joined KEX and in the 1944 directory it lists him living at 2954 Victory Apartments in Vanport, Oregon.

Yes, it's true. I "WAS" Bob Charles for about 6 months at the beginning of 1970. The job was weekends and news relief (even got a Sunday Sawbuck from AP). I think it was still KPAM/KPFM but I'm not sure. That summer I did middays at KGAR and I may have been Bob Charles there too. That fall I started at KGW and when I finally got to say my name on the radio Hal Widsten (the PD) said I had a great name and should use it. And so it was. Semoochie, who ARE you? Thanks Kyle, I'll add that name to his listing. Meanwhile John Hugill has confirmed he was "Captain Weenie", on Z100, dubed by evening DJ John Edwards. Hugill was an Intern at the time. He really did use Todd "you fill in the blank" Allen on Q-105. He started at Q-105 as Todd "The Jammin' Salmon" Allen, and rumor has it Z-100 objected to his use of their "Jammin' Salmon" name on Q, thus, "you fill in the blank" was substituted.

Speaking of Todds, what about Tom Phelan? He was Todd Clarke/Randall on KISN. Almost anyone old enough would remember Tom. He even ran for office!

Randy: Todd said in his post he was "Jammin' Salmon Z100". Did Todd later work for Z100 after Q105? Semoochie: I don't remember Todd Clarke or Todd Randall. You're saying he used both names on KISN at different times? What name was more well known? I need a name to put the listing under.

As for where Todd Allen worked and when, that would be a question for "Kahtik" himself to clarify. The Jammin' Salmon was a well known Z-100 mascot prior to Todd using the nick-name "Jammin" Salmon" briefly on Q-105.

Tom Phelan was part-time on KISN and KPOJ/K at the same time for years! I think they hired a jock named Randall so he switched to Clarke but it may have been the other way around. He was also Tom Phelan, later on KGAR.

"I think they hired a jock named Randall so he switched to Clarke". Who hired? KISN or KPOJ/K? Randy: I was just thinking, if he used Todd "you fill in the blank" Allen or Todd "The Jammin' Salmon" Allen. This would disqualify his name from being on the list. It gives us his entire name. The whole idea of this list is to uncover other identities we wouldn't know. He's still on the list with his secondary name "Todd The Bod".

OK, for clarification... I (state your name) Todd Allen was talked into radio after being the jock for the number one all age nightclub, Club Plaza in PDX. Went to Keith Allen's Broadcast Professionals (GREAT GUY) and am one of the few still working years later, as Keith mentioned very few would be. Put together an outdoor event in June of 1984 I called Video Bash 84 and ask KMJK to get on board. They wouldn't so, Z100 being brand new, joined in and Johnny Edwards guest miced in the crowd and I spun on mic from the top of the waterfall. We quit counting bodies at 10,000. Seriously! That event prompted Z100 to hire me to come work for them and Dave Crowl asked me to become the Jammin' Salmon due to my promotional knowledge. I was still at Broadcast Professionals then and accepted. I was not verbally on the air until later thanks to Dennis Nakata one night asking me to cover his overnight while he was doing some production. Gary Bryan was not thrilled when he found out, but I was used once in a while for weekends besides my regular duties. When Chet Buchanan came on board, he used me for his "night street guy". At the same time I started at KWIP in Dallas, OR working under Eric Norberg, another GREAT individual to work for. Did just about everything, so ended up working at both Z100 and AM 880 KWIP at the same time. Handled anything and EVERYTHING relating to keeping the "Jammin' Salmon" an icon. That also led to me getting a ticket and going to the first Portland Breakers game where Steve "Dream" Weaver (an old buddy of mine) saw me from his press box and read my mind, make him a mascot for the team. So, I had a Z100 Breakers jersey created and kept it all rolling. Jump to 1986 as KSKD was flipping and heard Jim Ryan was quietly looking. He offered me an evening 6 - 10pm gig, and I was on board from the flip day one. Made it through the cuts a year later after our move to Portland, and in two books, beat Chet. He was not happy, but being friends, was surprised Ryan let me go on April 5th, 1988 after our best set of numbers three weeks before. Yes, still have them. I think a rumor was started by someone else that I wanted to use Todd "Jammin' Salmon" Allen, but that was untrue. Of course, Jim was great to point out that I had experience from some other station for my antics when we were doing parades and such. The Todd "you fill in the blank" Allen was something I started doing because I was allowed to do some great cash contests and always had different things going on. It wasn't a permanent moniker, just something I did. After the numb feeling of Ryan letting me go, I worked at Mt. Hood Meadows doing Information stuff as well as their PA announcer for a couple of seasons. That's why sometimes up there you would hear a Homer Simpson talking about the food deli. Now, I did find out a few years later that a stocker and another listener stole some business cards from my place and the guy was using them and saying he was me. It was NIGHTMARE and actually cost me a gig back at Z100 when Mark (can't remember last name) PD was there. Tony M was witness to a conversation as Mark was going to hire me. In 1989 I started commuting every weekend to KUBE thanks to Chet and pulled the 10pm to 6am Friday night/Sat. Saturday night 6pm to Mid, and Sunday morning 10am - 2pm then drove back south. Loved doing Sat night jams as I used to be a club jock. I quit in 1991 as I just became too tired between that and my full time gig. Two weeks later, Scott Landers who got my gig when I left was upped to overnights as Jim West quit. ARRGGGH! I couldn't believe I missed that window. Oh, did a board op at the old KMJK for six months, but eventually went back on air at KLYK in Longview under Joe E King and Bob Hart. Did that until be hired by Rick Taylor in 1996. He grabbed me for weekends, but Billy and The Bean asked me to start being their "man on the street" that first Monday, plus Susan Barr wanted out of afternoon traffic, so was offered that too. Worked a whole month straight with no days off. Then we tweaked it and I was mornings on the street and produced when Jimmy was out. When Brad and Bean left, Lee kept Jimmmy, myself and Susan, and we started rolling. Amy was added later. My promotions position also fell under all this. Was there until December 1998. Went to work at KRKT doing mornings all 1999. Then Portland Prowlers Operations Mgr 2000 and 2001, then over to Bend, Mornings at KSJJ and Power 94 2002 and 03. Oh, KVAN radio, some news just before that. Then landed PD/Mornings KYSN in Wenatchee in 2003. Out with new owner in 2006. Also worked first book for the Wolf in Seattle on Sundays, and enjoyed those numbers. Then 2007 at Tri-Cities, doing overnights, fill and more for the Wolf KIOK, then transfered to KLAD in Klamath Falls as PD/Afternoons, which I gotta go now. WHEW, you're up to date. Later....

That's fine, Craig, no problem. Most were out of Portland anyway. "The bod" is not one of my favorites as I had no choice since it was Lee Roger's love for fish names that started it. It was one of those I never called myself, but everyone called me that on the air during my KUPL days. Thanks.

Hey, Ron: I thought you used another airname or two, but couldn't remember when I was trying to think up some for Craig's original post. Sorry to hear you've been out. I was on the beach for nearly a year after the Cherry Creek Radio purchase of Fisher stuff. The old GM surprised me when I showed up for work after a weekend trip to visit the wife and another "stellar" book I put together as was doing the PD/Mornings thang. I guess decent ratings were something they were not used to. Also had a blast going up against John Windus. We still email back and forth. So, since John had nothing across the street, I put everything into storage and headed up to Vancouver, BC to visit my wife. Ended up falling in love with that city, as I've been there so many times, but is different when you actually live there. Had hoped someone would like to go up against JRFM, as they do a great job. But remember, there is always room to kick more butt. Nothing panned out, so headed south for Tri-Cities and enjoyed the six months over there until I came down to Klamath Falls to run KLAD. Small staff, but great group of folks who care about their product. Tom Oakes from New Northwest Broadcasters (stationed in Anchorage) placed an ad for all our stations searching for future talent. Be sure to send a package, as you never know where we might buy and sell next. Keep your head up man, and keep knocking on the doors. I know it's tough as we never know who our enemies are. I'm lucky enough to finally learn a few key ones, as I have the "real" dirt from very reliable sources. It's like being on patrol, I just keep my weapon locked and loaded, ready to fire when fired upon. ;) Good luck and stay in touch man! TA

Thanks Ron: I thought I heard you when I was in town in Oct 06, but was with the wife on our first semi-real vacation across the Pacific Northwest. I had already squeezed in an interview with NNB in Tri-Cities a few days before, so she wasn't about to let me go "play" radio. I could only listen. GREAT to hear about the production side of things! I was just thinking about that day at Q105 (Salem still) in the prod room when asked for my help. I ALWAYS admired your work man, as I can remember back to my young club days when you were slammin' in the early Portland days. I think I told you that many times before when we worked the "Q" together. Of course, that was when Jim Ryan wasn't blowing out the other bodies. As tough as he was, I still enjoyed all he had to offer and what he was willing to share. LOL short side bar: Do you remember that order of Q shirts that were made in Pakistan. The XL's were barely big enough for a six year old and besides the standard XL and L shipment, Jim ordered about 1,000 mediums. Hey, there's a new thread, or maybe there was already one. I would say ditto on the Robin thang, but never got to work with him. Always wanted to as I heard many a good things, and still do, even before jumping on here, but there was never the right opening when I was "on the beach". OK, gotta run check on my station(s), current country, but will start handling the classic as well. Making some minor clock tweaks and always like to personally hear the updates, liners and music flow myself. Keep it going man! TA

Cool. A little unknown secret that I enjoy when going back to visit, is staying in Chelan at the Best Western Lakeside Inn that is now doubled in size. If you plan on staying anytime between the day after Labor Day and Memorial Weekend, (the off season), you can talk them down to about $79 a night, verses the $225 they charge during tourist season. They have a decent continental breakfast too. Oh, that's what I paid for king suites. Then run down to Campbell's for a dinner and your good to go. Just an FYI for ya.

Steve O'Shea used "Rock-A-Day" as a nickname from time to time more than anything. He didn't use it as his actual full-time air name. O'Shea was at KEX from about 1977-1980. He was the last evening music jock on KEX before the "Northwest At Night" talk show debuted.

Hey, Scott: Yeah, I though you came on board right around the time Jimbo gave me the boot. I was just asked by one of the guys I work with who used to be glued to my show, (now that makes me feel old), what the segue note tones were we used? I think those had been pulled by the time you were there, but I was laughing when I told him that Jim had them all put in, then found out that we were a 1/2 note off on every one of them. Oh, how unhappy he was. Sure miss the big ol' boombox though, and doing those Friday night football appearances, or the bar star stuff. I don't know if you heard, but Joe E's out in Boise now back doing engineering. Always enjoyed working the three stations I have with him. FYI, I know it's far out, but if your stations needs some live bits from an American in Canada in 2010, let me know. I was living up there last year, as my wife is Canadian, so I'm going back to freelance during that time. The good news is I don't have to say "szedule" or "aboout" like my Canadians buds do, so I can be as American as apple pie. Catch up with ya later. ------------------------- Chris, Ohme Gardens is great! Best time to hit it when it's not so hot is June or September. My wife were married in our private ceremony there in 2004. It was excellent! Yeah, the Best Western doesn't have a bad view, as both building face the lake. FYI, the new golf course, I think it's Bear Creek Ranch not sure, but a wonderful course. It's as you come over the hill to Lake Chelan on your left. excellent GPS system and not too bad for the cost. There is also a new wine tasting place in Wenatchee called Chateau Faire Le Pont, I know the owners and they are top notch on their stuff. Also in downtown Wenatchee, Inna's Cuisine. Fine Ukranian, Russian and Greek food. I speak Russian, and they know me, so if you do go, you gotta mention Todd Allen the radio guy, (the owner will smile, as Inna hasn't seen me in almost a year. Inna is a top notch cook and they import a nice Ukranian stout beer to boot, that's about 7%! FYI, if you eat at the Italian restaurant, Visconti's, go to the one in Leavenworth, the food is still great, but the atmosphere is even better. John Windus from KKRV will have the skinny on all the latest things going on too as he's running that station. Enjoy!

Semoochie: Visconti's in Leavenworth is only a family chain of two. The family started the original in Wenatchee. When the pub pulled out of it's Leavenworth location, they couldn't resist leasing that property. It's kind of funny, as the locals in Wenatchee have their V on Wenathcee Avenue, and the tourists who usually only hit Leavenworth know of the one there. Being a radio person there, and having every guest imaginable on my show back then, I learned a lot fast, plus I'm always active in the community whether it's soccer, basketball, football or whatever, so you learn even more. Wenatchee is slow to getting there on the reality that they have to start getting some key things to draw some bodies. That's why the new arena went through and should be done by the end of this year or next. It will be kind of the size of what Everett has. Not a problem mention places, I'm a TRUE Pacific Northwesterner and proud of it. I've been to every corner of Oregon and Washington and then some in Idaho too. Now if you all ever need the skinny on Vancouver, BC (aptly named about the same time as Vancouver, WA or as I used to call it many, many years ago, THE "COUVE", I can give you the key spots there, like Anton's on Hastings Street going east of downtown Vancouver past Hwy 1 in Burnaby. The best Italian food you've ever had, and the lines outside on Friday and Saturday evenings prove it. Waited 35 minutes outside last weekend, but worth it! Take care, TA

Craig: I don't know if this thread will ever be complete. Upon perusing the "final list," I noted your listing of "Mr. Duffy." It made me recall another "Mr." who played radio in Portland. From my website 1959-61...' Here's the KISN DJ lineup April - June 1960: 6-9AM HAL RAYMOND (PD) "The Morning Mayor" 9-Noon BOB STEVENS 12-3PM RUSS RIPLEY "Luncheon Munchin'" 3-7PM MIKE WESTERN 7PM-1AM TOM MURPHY "Tiger Tom Murphy" 1-6AM ED LEAHY "Nightwatch" Leahy had been "MR. MOON," a kiddie show host on KOIN-TV. Puppetry for the show was designed by BILL HOWLITT, "Uncle Bill" on K-VAN. Benson High School student, MIKE PHILLIPS, began working part time at KISN. Since KISN already had a "Mike," he became M.J. PHILLIPS. Phillips covered vacations for Murphy and Western, and "sick days" for Ripley and Leahy.

"I don't know if this thread will ever be complete." Robin: Yes, that's fine. I waited 3 weeks to repost the list, hoping new people here at pdxradio will post more names again. Ed Leahy is on the list but I didn't know Bill Howlitt designed Mr. Moon! That was one of my favorite kiddie shows. Also listed is Mike Phillips. Did RUSS RIPLEY use "Luncheon Munchin" as his name or was this the title of his show? Same with ED LEAHY use of "Nightwatch" was that just the name of the show? HAL RAYMOND "The Morning Mayor" that sounds like a secondary name and will add it. Thanks!

You know the personnel churn at Star stations. I believe "Morning Mayor," "Housewife's Helper," "Luncheon Munchin', "Car Tune Kid," and "Nightwatch" were used in all Burden markets and appeared on the program log instead of jock names. 7pm-1am was the only slot that didn't seem to have a moniker like that. I'm sure RUSS RIPLEY used LUNCHEON MUNCHIN' as a secondary show identifier, just as MIKE PHILLIPS did during his tenure, KEN CHASE, FRANK BENNY, and so on. I believe TOM MICHAELS used this show moniker during his time in this slot, too. HOUSEWIFE's HELPER would have been WALLY THORNTON, BOB STEVENS, BILL WESTERN, ROGER HART & more. CAR TUNE KID would have been MIKE WESTERN, JACK PAR, JOHNNY WILLIAMS (the KHJ one), BILL WESTERN, MIKE PHILLIPS. Don't remember The REAL DON STEELE ever using the moniker...or by any of the jocks that followed him in that slot. NIGHTWATCH would have been JOHNNY DARK, ED LEAHY, RUSS RIPLEY, PAT PATTEE. As far as nicknames go, it was HAL "COFFEE HEAD" RAYMOND...and he was the MORNING MAYOR. He did a coffee schtick...which I have on CD. JACK PARR & BILL WESTERN both used MORNING MAYOR. When POA arrived, he was the METRO MORNING MAYOR...kind of a spin on METRO GOLDWYN MAYER...then they dropped it altogether. Going back and rereading your lists, I see you had ED LEAHY mentioned with the MR. MOON AKA. I missed it, and thought of him when you listed MR. DUFFY later in the list.

Robin: Ok, I'll add them all. The MORE the MERRIER! Do you think it would be better if I changed "Mr. Duffy" to Frank Kinkaid as the main name listing? I didn't know the name Frank Kinaid from radio. I was judging for the most well known name. Same with Ed Leahy aka Mr. Moon. What names would you list each under?

I know them both from their TV personnas. Don't think I ever heard either one on radio. MR. MOON preceded Leahy's radio work, so it's more of an attention-getter on the list. MR. DUFFY...I don't know. Never liked the TV show, but then I thought MR. MOON was goofy, too.

From what Stoner said, I don't know what side of WWDJ to place Bwana at KGW. KGB 1970 WWDJ 1971 WFUN 1974 Looks like from the 440 website there is a space in time between WWDJ & WFUN. Looks like Bwana's time at KGW might have been around 1972-73, if this all makes sense.

I attended a party a Bwana's place in NE Portland around 1981-82...right after his stint with KARO (Car Radio). He related the DICK KILPATRICK KGW story to me, as his house was just off Kilpatrick. He said it was when MIKE PHILLIPS was KGW's PD, I believe after KISN went dark. Do those 2 events coincide? Remember, Phillips and Bwana had known each other since Phillips' original stint at KISN in 1960. They hung together in San Francisco...when Mike was at KFRC & Bwana was at KYA...and then worked together again at WWDJ.

Robin's right about the time frame for KGW. Bwana had been doing mornings on KARO, I did middays, Joe Nasty did afternoons and Kelly McCrae worked nights out at the Smith Lake site. Nasty would also go on the air as "Wolfgang Jock" but only at night and only after being fortified with apricot brandy.

That makes more sense to me. I worked with Mike at KGW from May 77 to Sept 79. Mike left for SF a couple months ahead of me. He was a fairly new PD when I got to KGW, so I'd guess he got the gig in either late 76 or early 77.

Mike Phillips became PD of KGW Spring of 1975, moving into that position from Afternoon Drive, which he took in May of 1974. He accepted the PD job at KYUU, San Francisco, in Spring of 1979. Bwana Johnny/ Crazy Dick Sims was a regular visitor at the station, although he was working at KISN at the time. Crazy times.

Tomparker, as a Seattle kid in the 70's, I distinctly remember certain KGW jocks coming up to fill in for the vacationing guys at KING. If I recall, I think you did once or twice. Always wondered, how did the KGW jocks feel about that? Was it a hassle, or a chance to shine in a bigger market? Seems like an odd move today, but back then it really was kind of a farm system.

Paul, I would say my week of fill in at KING in the Summer of 1975 was a defining moment of my career. The King Farm system let us move up a market (Spokane to Portland, Portland to Seattle) to do vacation relief...and we loved it! It gave me the confidence to see myself in a larger market, and the guts to apply at KFRC later that year.

Tom, that's a great story. BTW, you sounded great on KING! Nerd alert...I remember hearing you 33 years ago (gasp!) like it was yesterday. Thanks for placing the date. What a great radio era compared to today. Guys excited to do their craft in a larger market, and with passion! And management who knew how to motivate air talent. We are losing a lot of that, and all bets are off if it will ever be back.

The King Broadcasting farm system really was a great motivational tool, and it allowed the PD's to cover vacation shifts with up-and-coming talent whom they could also scout out and mentor. We did that in news, too...not in vacation relief, but in filling openings...Steve Alexander, Linda Kennedy, George Harris, Bob Parker, Lee Hochberg, Cheryl Nielson, Mike Rich, me, and others I'm sure I've spaced out, all made in-company moves somewhere along the KREM-KGW-KING circuit that expanded to include KYA. Some of us reflect in retrospect that the best station in that system was actually at 1501 SW Jefferson, but KING--in the Lockjock, Phil Harper, Andy Barber days--sure felt like a killer the first time I cracked that 50 kw mic with a directional signal to downtown Vancouver BC. (Downtown Seattle, not so much).

(man what a line up) It was also a joy to hang with the KINK crew too that included Scott Carter and Michael Black. Tom: Thanks! That clears up Bwana enough where I can place KGW in the Bwana station bio! KISN - 1975 ("Crazy" Dick Simms) KGW - 197? (Dick Kilpatrick) KARO - 1980 ("Bwana" Johnny) (Note: There were no other stations listed (440 site) outside of the Portland area during this Bwana period.) Plus, Wow! Great info on Mike Phillips time at KGW. I've documented it all. Now I have another Bwana question that Robin Mitchell could answer. Bwana was KB101 Music Director in 1982 under real name, Rick Johnson. Was he ever on the air at KB101 and if so, as who?

Bwana worked at KB101 in 82. I believe you uncovered a press release to the Record Industry regarding what time he'd be available to take their calls...that would pinpoint the year for certain. Initially, he was Bwana Johnny, but Ron Saito felt the name was racially insensitive, so Bwana took to referring to himself primarily as BJ...with an occasional "Bwana Johnny." (Of course, BJ might be considered sexually insensitive...but nobody seemed to have a problem with that...male or female.) Bwana succeeded Uncle Don Wright in PM Drive. This was probably early 82. He was there until we flipped KB101 to ROCK 101 in November 1982. The call letters, KRCK, came within 30-45 days, with on-air sells becoming "101 KRCK," with "The Rock" becoming an additional identifier when we mentioned the station a second time in a concert plug, etc.

I remember Dick Johnson doing nights on KFLY. Before that, he was on afternoons and early evenings across town at the very-MOR KLOO, then only an AM station. Bob Houglum, who owned the place, said one night after the station signed-off, Dick was in the control room, playing the hits and the jingles and rockin' out...and when Bob stuck his head in there to see what was going on, Dick said...This is what we should be doing in the nighttime...and I guess they did for awhile. Then KFLY hired him away. Since Mr. Moon is mentioned earlier, does anybody know just exactly how his run on KOIN-TV ended and replaced with Frank Kincaid as the "ringmaster" of Cartoon Circus? One of my former bosses used to frequently guest on Red Dunning's "Saddle Pals" which either preceded or followed Mr. Moon. He told me that sometimes it appeared that the Moon might have partaken in a little liquid courage to survive the ordeal of live television. I heard the last MR. MOON show was memorable, and he was gone the following day. Is anybody still around that might have the true story from the black and white days of KOIN-TV in the 50's???

Ed Leahy's overnight stint on KISN may have followed his run as MR. MOON. As a kid, I thought MR. MOON was lame. The legend I'd always heard is MR. MOON would end each show saying, "..and kids looks both ways before crossing the street." We all heard he'd been killed crossing a street...but we probably wanted to believe that. Tom Murphy told me Leahy wouldn't show up for his shift on occasion, & Tiger Tom would still be on air when Hal Raymond arrived for the morning show. Mur said Leahy was a drinker. I believe the second time Leahy didn't show, Hal Raymond replaced him. The next in line was Russ Ripley. Then once all the Xmitter work & move to the KISN Corner was completed, Chief Engineer (Byron Swanson) added the overnight duties as JOHNNY DARK...until the arrival of PAT PATTEE.

Okay, I'll add to the Bwana Johnny resume: I moved to Denver Fall 83 to progam KPPL for Malrite. We switched the station to CHR as Y108. The AM was Sports/Talk KLAK. Bwana had been programming a Country FM in Cheyenne, Wyoming...just up the freeway from Denver using the moniker "Bronco Johnny." Don Imus' younger brother worked for him there. I hired Bwana in Denver for Utility work with Y108, and he oversaw KLAK operations. As a lark, instead of BWANA JOHNNY on Y108, he was BUFFALO CLAUDE KEELEY. After Denver, he went to KSND as PD. From there he worked somewhere in Montana with KEITH TODD formerly of KUPL. I believe he was programming the CHR, and KEITH handled the country station. From there, Bwana went to his last gig at JONES NETWORKS in Seattle, where he oversaw music scheduling, working for KEN MOUTRIE who he had hired when Ken was in college.

Robin, Bwana worked for Clear Channel's operation in Billings, Montana, programming KKBR, 97.1 K-Bear. Oldies format. That was between the two times I lived there. Don't remember if he was on the air there, but it was from Billings that he madxe the move to Jones Radio in Seattle. While Bwana wasn't the easiest guy to get along with, I do have a real soft spot in my heart for him, because he gave me my first job in radio at KARO, in 1980. No resume, no air check, just happened to call at absolutely the right time. It hurt a lot when he passed. I hope the email I sent to one of his friends got read to him. I called him up and we compared some notes and I figured out that we had both graduated from Drake Univ. in Des Moines, Iowa about 10 years apart. Yet I never found any reference to him under that name in an alumni guide. So if anyone knows what other names he used, be they air names or civilian names, I'd like to know.

At some point in the mid 90's BWANA worked at KODZ-FM in Eugene (KPNW's "sister station) when I worked across the hall doing News/Talk. I remember that he helped install a new automation system using multiple CD players that somehow were synched up correctly. He was rather calm in those days. Anyone remember? My memory is fuzzy about it.

I knew kid named Fred Broman who worked at a top station in Portland in the late '60s. Any guesses?

Bwana came to KSND in 1986. He was hired by either Brian Burns or Dave Shakes (I can't remember anymore.) However Bwana was hired for just mornings and worked with sidekick/news woman Joan Murray. When Dave Shakes left KSND, KSNDs manager Mike Groshong promoted Bwana to program director. When Groshong left KSND new management didn't approve of some 'standard practices' and fired Bwana. It was more than just low ratings. Bwanas wacky crazy parties seem legendary today. Good times.....

tomedwards, i was hired in 1997 to work at kodz and bwana had been let go the same week. he stayed long enough to teach me selector and then i helped get him loaded into his moving trailer and he was off to montana. i knew him for just a short time and he always treated me right even tho i had taken over his job. dan dobner was the person that hired me back in 97.

Bwana's parties at the Gavin in SF were pretty wild and his choice in "guests" was interesting as well. Dobner was there? I knew him in Prineville. Last I heard he had a little production company in Prineville.
