The Oregonian's website is shared with Oregonlive.com, and it looks like crap. It's such a lame site for a major daily paper, that it makes me wonder if the paper intentionally tries to avoid web traffic in favor of people subscribing to the actual paper.

Probably because they haven't figured a way to make money off of it, so they do it on the cheap.

The Salem and Lincoln City newspaper websites are both far more well-put together. Don't tell me people from from New York City can't put together a site to compete with much smaller newspapers.

The Oregon Live forum section is busy enough. Lots of teen age kids and parents there talking sports stuff.

That part of it is cool. The rest needs some serious direction.

Same with the Columbian (Vancouver, WA). The site makes me want to subscribe - except I don't live in Clark County! (A certain front-page article on Sept. 21, 2005 almost got me to do that, though.)

Even Pamplin's Local News Daily site for the Portland Tribune, Bee, Gresham Outlook, Tigard/Tualatin Times, etc., runs rings around 'oregonvoicetracked!'

Additionally, with the amount of Portland-proper online news available elsewhere, people can use any number of other information sources and bypass the O altogether. Many that've canceled their subscriptions already have.

I think part of the issue is that the "OregonLive" site hasn't really changed in many years, and wasn't that great to begin with. It's long overdue for an update... also the search engine sucks.
