I heard a rap song on K103! It was a newer song I recognized with an older melody line but different lyrics. I know what song it was but don't remember right now. It was more of an Anglo Saxon rap but to my ears, definitely rap! It should be interesting to see what develops in the next couple of years. Country could be next!

He could be talking about Uncle Kracker I suppose. Not really rap though.

I don't know about rap, but K103 has been playing country songs as a part of their mix for several years. Tim McGraw, Rascal Flatts, Keith Urban, etc.

I didn't mean I heard the song and rushed to my computer to report the occurance. It was on my way to work this morning. That's why I don't remember which song it was derived from.

OK, I have the song: "Shaggy" by Angel w/Rayvon. It's apparently taken from "Angel of the Morning".

Do you mean "angel" by Shaggy W/Rayvon??? Yes that is surprising to hear that song on K103!! I heard "Say it Right" by Nelly Furtado on k103 the other day. While its not a rap song, I would never expect to hear it on k103! IS k103 trying to get younger listeners??

I don't think this is anything new. They have been moving in that direction for years now. The last time I saw any numbers they were pretty big with women 25-34.

That's an interesting take on that, Semoochie. Interesting that you'd consider it a rap song. I wonder how many of K103's listeners will have the same type of reaction. THe song isn't actually a rap song. It's more of a Reggae/Pop song. It also isn't that new. It's from Shaggy's "Hot Shot" CD, which was a multi-platinum seller in 2000. I would think it has definite appeal to K103's younger audience. How their older audience will react is anyone's guess. But it is interesting what AC radio is evolving into, isn’t it?

Don't know the song in particular, but there's a strong link/overlap between reggae and rap. Shaggy definitely leans toward the rap side of reggae.

It must have been a misprint at the source. K103 has always targetted Women 25-54. The only thing that's changed is what it takes to reach them. This song, while clearly in the Reggae/Pop camp, was apparently inspired by Rap. It isn't a narrative nor did it take the approach of the Syndicate of Sound's "Little Girl", which doesn't have a melody line and it took me 43 years to realize it! I believe the average outsider would perceive it to be "rap" or at least "rap leaning".

I think you're under-estimating today's 40 year old women. Remember, they grew up listening to Bobby Brown and New Kids on the Block on Z100. I highly doubt they are going to be offended by a borderline reggae song.

IMHO, if it's actually got theme and melody, it will do just fine. That's the biggest differentiator I've seen from that demo. Blasting out the message, no matter how compelling and powerful, isn't the same as singing it, and I think that matters to a lot of people who would listen to this station. The other musical elements are interesting and probably do not differentiate the tunes in and of themselves.

This was not a negative comment. It was an observation of popular tastes evolving. K103 wouldn't play a song if they thought it would offend any of their target audience.
