Tonight on Fox 12's 10 O'clock News it was announced KPTV will launch a new weekday afternoon Newscast starting at 4:00pm. No beginning date was announced but the entire 10 O'clock news team will be on both newscasts.

Will this newscast be on too early for you? Or have you been waiting for a 4pm local newscast? Will this hurt the other local newscasts in ratings?

Well, Fox News HAS been a breath of journalistic fresh air since they began broadcasting in 1996. Before then, no television news magazines echoed my sentiments regarding the ACLU, or renegade judges. Finally, Middle America has a news channel! More power to Fox News!

"no television news magazines echoed my sentiments regarding the ACLU, or renegade judges."

Huh? I thought news was supposed to be fair and balanced, not slanted to one's liking . . . Hey, Wayne Garcia is talking about Hannah Montana again, quit bothering me.

Just who do they think is going to watch?

Maybe Eve will get her news there, instead of the Register-Guard from now on.

This is the problem with branding and getting away from actual call letters. KGW calls themselves Northwest News Channel 8 or some such thing. KPTV calls itself Fox12. When they say that Fox12 is going to have a 4PM newscast, you all start talking like it is the Fox News Channel.

KPTV is not Fox News Channel. KPTV is an affiliate of the Fox Entertainment Network. That is separate from the Fox News Channel and the Fox Movie Channel, etc. They may have the same parent owner but they are not the same.... Some things may be shared but they are independent entities. The newscasts on KPTV are theirs, NOT of the Fox News Channel. KPTV decides what to air on their news, not Fox. KPTV does air Fox News Sunday, or whatever it is called, but they get it from their Fox Entertainment network feed, not from the Fox News Channel.

You beat me to the punch on this one! If you want to hear Fox newscasts on the air on Portland, you should be listening to KXL, not watching channel 12.

Looks like KATU and KPTV are both going to duke it out in a "Coal Miner's Glove Match" to determine who is the reigning 4pm newscast.

If I were booking this I would go for an all out brawl with a finish of a No-Contest DDQ Abortion. You would have to be a wrestling fan to understand that. Sorry folks but the 4pm newcast idea stinks.

If your looking to compete against Oprah or Ellen why not do something more original like a local original afternoon talk show?

Fox12's Good Afternoon Oregon
KATU's PM Northwest

And did not KATU try both the 4pm news as well as an afternoon version of AM Northwest in the past?

Better yet why not a resurrection of the much respected and loved TownHall only a daily weekday show instead of a Sunday nigh show?

Some observations from that clip of Portland Wrestling. Its amazing how new lost episodes keep popping up over the years. I think that Buddy Rose was probally one of the first owners of a VCR in the Portland market and wouldn't be at all surprised if that came from his collection. And boy is that not a slim and trim Buddy Rose?

The only guy in that match that didn't go onto bigger and better things in wrestling was Mr. Ebony.

God rest Curt Hennig's, Don Owen's, and Sandy Barr's souls.

I will admit to those clips being from my collection.....

Yes, I grew up as another Portland kid that had to watch "Portland Wrestling" every Saturday night.

The story behind how I restored the 1970's footage is long and involved, but well worth the effort. The 1980's stuff is from my own collection of what I recorded and save from back then.

Can you imagine KPTV airing something like "Portland Wrestling" today? That station has changed more than any other TV station in the market since PW left the air in late 1991.

Trixter I respectfully disagree with you. You ask any insider, historian, and or journalist and they will almost unamiously say no regarding Mr Ebony Tom Jones. Furthermore its a joke for the fan page to claim that Tom Jones was the man to break the color barrier in wrestling. This may be contriversial for me to say but the man to break the color barrier in wrestling was not a black man but a white man and that is the late Sputnik Monroe. For gods sake Tom Jones came nearly a generation after the likes of Sailor Art Thomas and Bobo Brazil. Furthermore at the same time that Mr Ebony was wrestloing Portland you had Slyvester Ritter aka Junkyard Dog tearing up the south and Rocky Johnson tearing up the Northeast.

Mr Ebony was a jabroni/jobber/bit player in the biz.

Well Shy....
I'm NOT up on my wrestling as you are and I don't know if that good or bad. I just put a URL to a site that I found doing a search.
As far as black wrestlers go the first one I EVER saw on TV was Rocky Johnson here in Portland when he had a 8 months stint on PW. Outside of that YOUR the expert.

KPTV like many other Fox Network affiliates in the US likes to tag along on the coat tails of the FOX NEWS dynasty. So that all those viewers who watch FOX NEWS CHANNEL might mark or report a diary FOX 12 in lieu of FNC or one of the other FOX franchises ,and all it takes is one of two of those to slant the ratings a bit in their favor.

We're discussing this over at OMI. They're not concerned about ratings. Ratings don't matter. What matters are avails (ad time) in an election year. This means about $2.5 mil in revenue for 12.

Interesting to see how the FOX perception has morphed over the 23 years since Rupert Murdoch bought the Fox studio and Metromedia's TV stations.
Before FNC, Fox was known for the crime-and-grime flash-and-dash newscasts produced by its O-and-O's (I was producing just such a cast in Chicago).
Now, FNC's image overshadows the reality that most Fox O-and-O's and affiliates (like Fox12) do their own thing for their own markets. Through the miracle of satellite technology (don't ask too deeply), I see Fox casts from DC, NYC, Boston and Seattle. While they share a graphic package available to all Fox stations, they do very different casts. And right wing spin has nothing to do with any of them.

News will work anytime of the day in today's world, but 4pm news may pull mainly older demographics.

Which will be the first local TV station to put a 24-hour news channel on a digital sub?

Will Belo put NW News Network on 8.2?

I've actually missed NWCN ever since I haven't been anywhere with cable (1999).
If it's anything like it used to be, and there was a commitment made by the TV station and owner that the programming would be available on the subchannel for at least a certain number of years, that would make getting a digital tuner worth it.
Another channel I wish someone would consider - this one could possibly even qualify as some sort of donation - CityNet 30.
