Folks - I was listening to Rick Emerson yesterday and someone told a story about a KNRK DJ who apparently got drunk and spent his airshift swearing and causing a ruckus. This supposedly happened on April 1st 1995. Exactly why he didn't get pulled off the air in an expedient manner wasn't made clear. Anybody remember this incident, can confirm it's factuality, or remember who it was? Thanks.

It was Ty. He loved saying BUTTHOLE surfers. (ps: You're early. Today is Feb. 1st., not April 1st. Besides, I don't think KNRK existed on that date.)

Hey, how often do you have a legitimate reason to say "butthole" on the air?

94.7 flipped to Alternative in March, although the calls didn't change to KNRK until 4/28/95.

I knew a sidekick morning show dude who used to call people 'Buttpipe" on the air and got away with it.

That actually doesn't surprise me. "Buttpipe", unless it carries a cryptic meaning that I'm not aware of, is just two acceptable words compounded. I would think saying "God damn it" on the air would be much more offensive to many more people than something like "buttpipe", which sounds like a schoolyard taunt. Yet I hear "God Damn it" used on the air. KUFO used to use it a lot.

quote:what was NRK before it flipped?
It was KMUZ an Easy Listening station...still remember sitting in my bedroom listening when they flipped formats. The KMUZ talent all said their goodbyes and said "see you on the AM side"...then they played about a two-minute musical montage of rock and roll highlight clips from the 50s until the then present day 90s...and KNRK was born. It would be nice to have an easy listening station again...the closest we have down here in the south valley is "music of your life" KSHO 920 out of Lebanon. Even then reception is rather spotty in Eugene.

Slogans: "Light 94.7." "Light Favorites." "This is refreshing 94.7 FM, K-Music." "94.7 FM, always good company, always refreshing music." "Thanks for listening to K-Music." There's just a few of the many slogans heard on KMUZ-FM. On March 6, 1995 at 5:00pm KMUZ-FM became "New Rock 94.7." KMUZ-FM became KNRK on April 28, 1995. Mark Hamilton became P.D. in May 1995. Slogans: "Hey! Wake your radio up, it's 1995, New Rock 94.7." "The home of the new music revolution, New Rock 94.7." "Extreme Radio, 94-7 NRK." "Portland's New Rock Revolution."

Ya know... Although I'm long outa the biz, a long time ago, I lived for being on the air. I was doing my air shift and suddenly none of the pots would work. Thinking in the back of my mind that the mic pot was down as I was problem solving, I was cursing, "shit.. oh damn.. oh crap..." A listener, who was drying his hair, called me and said he had a GREAT sound system... and that during the dead air, turned it WAY UP to hear what was going on, had heard me. Fortunately for me, he was quite amused. Happens to everyone once in a while... along with being a weekender and playing a religious program backwards... by mistake... everything happens ONCE.

NRK was sooooo popular with my peers back when it first came on the air. Anybody got the first hour of music? "smells like teen spirit " by Nirvana sounds about right. Im honestly surprised that the Beat 107.5 lasted as long as it did. The music was pale in comparison to NRK back in the day.

107.5 The Beat's format was "Modern AC" and it was never meant to be a direct competitor to KNRK. "The Beat" as heard on 107.5 and the one previously on 970 were two different animals as well.

Speaking of drunk DJ's, I once heard Mark and Brian play an aircheck of a DJ who was totally plastered while on the air. I think the jock was in Houston. Anyone know where to find this clip online?

I also heard 'NRK's flip...as I remember the quick mix of rock hits was chronological and was followed by "and now we join the '90's...already in progress." Rather cool....

So, presuming that Skeptical's answer was made in jest... it sounds like the answer to my question is a no? I never even knew there was a station on 94.7 prior to NRK... and I even read the FM listings in the O from time to time. When did 94.7 initially sign on?

NRK ran one of those "mmmm-ch-mmmm-ch-mmmm-ch" sort of loops for a time with an ID every few minutes, then there was dead air, a short introduction, and they kicked into Nirvana. I remember it quite well because I was stuck in traffic on I-205. After almost an hour of predictable music, we gave up on the "New Rock Revolution" and went to KEX to see what the backup was all about.

Tadc: KMUZ-FM signed on the air November 1, 1992 with studio's at Suite A, 24 A. Street in Camas. If you're interested in how it all started before KMUZ-FM began operation, there is a pre-history on pdxradio's "Portland Radio History" page, under the title "The Camas F.M. Pre-History". It's a story in itself.

Im honestly surprised that the Beat 107.5 lasted as long as it did. 107.5 The Beat's format was "Modern AC"... Actually, the Alternative Rock version of The Beat *was* on FM for a little over a month, from Mid-July to Aug. (23?) 1996. There was new imaging from the same voice as 970 The Beat, proclaiming, "we have a strong new signal, so you can hear us here-here-here - Non-Stop Alternative Rock - 107.5 FM The Beat!" Imagine my surprise when the plug was pulled AND the KUFO Manage-A-Trois Weekend was cancelled... all on the same day! The AM/FM simulcast was broken when the stations changed to Modern AC (970 also ran Portland Pride indoor soccer games at the time - for the time the AM/FM simulcast was going on, the soccer play-by-play was on both stations). I also want to say that 970 then changed to Classic Country KUPL a month or two later. Years later, I met Dave Numme over at MHCC, so I asked if all of us asked very nicely and we didn't demand too much and we would be perfectly happy, would we ever get the format of 970 The Beat back. His answer: "No. You'd have to like Merle Haggard to listen to 970 now."

Hey Radiored ... I have a copy of the aircheck of the drunk dj in Houston. His name was Bob Jones. It was an overnight show on KQUE in the late 70's. It's a trainwreck! From the squeaky chair to the incoherent babbling, to his sexual innuendo, its a mess. His speech is slurred, he has multiple songs playing on top of one another, he argues with a listener & tells them he's sick. At one point, he leaves the mic hot and you hear him throw up in the middle of a Carpenters song. I'll have to upload some clips. KQUE, even during the overnight, would've had huge CUME in those days. Who knows how many people heard him ... oh how I hate that I missed out on the REAL party days of radio ... my guess is that Bob Jones drank himself to death long before I started in Houston radio in 1991 ... may he rest in peace.

Rawhide...thanks for the info on that aircheck. It is one of the strangest and (hate to say it) funniest things I've ever heard on the radio. If you can post it someplace I would love to hear it again!
