Bill Cosby To Release Hip-Hop Album

From All Access

BILL COSBY -- a staunch critic of some rap music -- is set to release a Hip-Hop album called "State of Emergency," which will be a sanitized, issue-oriented CD. Sources told ALLHIPHOP.COM that the actor, comedian and philanthropist will address issues like proper parenting, teen pregnancy, drug abuse, black-on-black crime and the dropout rate in America's high schools.

COSBY's album will not contain any profane language, nor will it offer any denigrating comments towards women. "State of Emergency" would be the 35th album for the legendary comedian, actor, who released his first album" BILL COSBY Is A Very Funny Fellow" in 1963.

Cosby's "Noah and God" routine is still a classic.

I like "Cars" (4 on the floor, 8 on the door, and 9 on the roof) and "Chinese Mustard".
Roland and the Roller Coaster is also classic!

I vote for "The chicken heart that ate New York State!" (thump-thump, thump-thump)

I found LPs of all the old 60's Cosby comedy albums at a used NYC record store years ago at $5 a pop. Bought 'em all. "Bill Cosby is A Very Funny Fellow: Right" (the Noah bit is included), "Why Is There Air", "For Russell, my brother, whom I slept with"...

Just did a youtube search and there were parts of his 1983 stand up act from "Bill Cosby-Himself."

I was in tears about his dentist bit.

I used to listen to "For Russell..." when I was a kid. Classic.

I can't imagine a Bill Cosby rap album. But I'm talking about it on my show tomorrow! :-)

In other words, Chris, are you saying you were laughing out of both sides of your "faybiss"?

If you've never seen the video, rent it and watch it from the floor, because that's where you'll end up by the end of the show!

Cos was on Letterman last night, kinda sorta plugging his new book... Actually I think he said 5 words about the book during the whole visit. The rest of the time he was doing a routine while sitting in a folding chair in the middle of the stage, and bantering with Letterman.

Plain and simple, Cos is a walking American treasure!

(And to bring this back to PDX Radio) Anyone remember Russ Conrad playing tracks from various comedy albums in the Comedy Spotlight on the KEX all-nighter on a regular basis?

It may not break the top 100 album list, but I'll bet Cosby's new album will be fun for all ages...

I think Bill Cosby would fit historically with Mark Twain and Will Rogers. I can't think of too many others with that kind of standing!

Mark

In 1983 a friend of mine and I watched "Himself" at his apartment and never laughed so hard.

We decided we needed to have our girl friends at the time watch this with us. So we set a dinner and movie night at my friends apartment. When we put on the video my friend and I would start laughing before the punchline, which drove our girlfriends crazy.

So we went to the kitchen and tried not to laugh. Of course that just makes you laugh that much harder. Needless to say, our girl friends at the time didn't have as much fun as we did.

My friend and I ended quoting many of Cosby's one liners for the next serveral months. I think our girl friends used that as the basis for ending the relationships.

Bill Cosby is one of the "true" comedians of our time.

He is funny without being nasty. A mark of real talent. He doesn't have to resort to gutter humor to be funny!

Doctor Cosby is one of a kind. It seems to me that he popularized the prototypes for the hip-hop image, so why not?

"I vote for "The chicken heart that ate New York State!" (thump-thump, thump-thump)"

Terry, I loved that one too. I believe it has roots in an Arch Obler script from one of my favorite episodes of Lights Out.

I also really dig the bit where Bill gets a car from Steve McQueen and it scares him so bad that he gives it to George Wallace.

I may still have an album called "Bill Cosby is Not Himself These Days Rat Own Rat Own Rat Own" from 1976 that may, actually, have been the first "rap" album. Very strange album. Bill used to make me laugh out loud, too, although my kids don't seem to share my hilarity for it. I may be playing them the wrong bits.
Louis Black, Chris Rock, John Leguizamo and Dennis Miller are great in this day and age. And, I'll always love John Pinette's "Chinese Buffet."

Bill was pretty hip, but not as hip as Ken Nordine. :0)

Louis Black is a very funny fellow.

Cosby is great, look forward to the album. But George Carlin is also a comedy god.

So, the man is obviously a legend, and he's very talented. But a rap album from a senior citizen? Hmm, I'm trying to keep an open mind here....

Agreed. Carlin is a riot!

However, Bill Cosby does it with class. He doesn't have to resort to being nasty to get a laugh.

It's kind of like comparing Johnny Carson to Jay Leno. (Not that Leno is nasty), just Johnny had class.
