Is anybody who tries to operate outside of the the "two party system" a turd? Hypothetically speaking, if Nader were to run as a Democrat, would that make him OK, or would he still deserve opprobrium?

I'm not a registered member of any political party. But, we have a de facto 2-party system in the United States. I think we should change our system to allow effective 3rd-party candidacies. One way to do this would be to allow for a top-two run-off election if no candidate received more than 50% of the national popular vote (which currently has no meaning). Since we now have 50 state elections on election day instead of one national election, though, that would be complicated to do.

(And I'm not a fan of "instant runoff" voting - I believe in the American tradition of one person, one vote.)

But under the current system, 3rd-party presidential candidates usually act like spoilers - and that's what Nader did in 2000. I doubt he would be able to do so again in 2008, given his history.

A 3rd party has no chance of winning and it just takes votes away from the two real parties.

"Somebody needs to run this man over with a Corvette."

Wonder if he meant Corvair? Naders mid 60s book "Unsafe at Any Speed" pretty much killed off the Corvair, not the Vette.

Perhaps a good one to use would be Rudy Giulianis' 66 convertible, here on eBay:

Good. Then we're agreed.

Run Ralph, Run!

Split the democrat party vote and we'll overturn Roe v. Wade for sure with conservative Supreme Court justices.

It's not really about talking about issues for you right now. It's just about making sure you are heard. Geeze, man. It's not like you haven't supported your position on abortion enough Herb. It just grinds everything to a halt. Every time you get someone's attention around here, you blow it with abortion talk every time.

Obviously you can do whatever you wish - but let me know when you are willing to talk about other things too ( and I know, I know - you do ) but I think it's just habit for you now. Start a thread about abortion. Let's really talk frankly about it. All aspects. But the constant falling into your own trap is killing you...and me. It's not healthy.

Quit making it so hard to enjoy talking with you.

I feel your pain, Chickenjuggler.

If I overdo it, it's mainly because plenty of politicos from both parties underdo it. That issue remains the elephant in the room which some want to avoid, yet it's going to be a big part of the coming debate and Mrs. Clinton has carved out her position, even attacking Mr. Obama on it.

Sorry if I seem like a one-note Johnny at times...but so were John Brown, Frederick Douglass, Abraham Lincoln and Mother Teresa. Pretty good company.

No, you're not among good company. You're in company with buffoons. My support of pro-choice as strong as your support of anti-choice, yet you don't see me on anyone else here cramming it down your throat in post after post after post

It's a complete waste of a perfectly good Corvette though. It would shred the fiberglass body.

How about a Chevette?

Actually, we could use a fellow like Ralph in the new cabinet. The Department of Transportation and Environmental Protection Agency are in need of a swift kick in the butt.
