In Friday's Fry's ad, there is a Car radio/CD/MP3 player with HD Radio included for $99.00.
Dual is the brand name. Never heard of it, but for $99.00....

If you've never heard of Dual, you must not be a seasoned vacuum tube. :-)

Well there's a good move: dis the girl on her very first post! That sets the tone for how knowledgeable YOU are and how stupid SHE must be, right?

That's how to encourage positive participation?

Welcome to the Forum.

I always think that if it's a no name with a low price then no dice. Often with electronics you get what you pay for.

I certainly didn't intend that to be an attack, merely an observation that he/she wasn't an oldtimer. I thought any REAL oldtimers might get something out of the reference. Welcome to the board! I noticed your last name. Are you any relation to Jack?

The "new Dual" is like the "new Westinghouse" and the "new Craig" - a vintage brandname bought by a cheap Chinese electronics manufacturer to get instant market recognition. Do not for a second expect the quality of the vintage products.

Thanks for the welcome!
First off, I'm a guy.
I used to listen to Jack on KKEY, but I'm not
a relative. I am old, but never equated this to the old Dual brand name. Huh. Might be the same company (but as said here, not the same quality).

I did a couple of Google searches for Dual products and found the original Dual company is still in business in Germany, and they offer a couple of high quality turntables through a few high-end dealers. Then I found some really cheap Dual products, both car audio and home speakers, available from discounters. Never did the twain meet among the sites I looked at. This leads me believe some other party is using the Dual name in the U.S. to sell the cheap stuff.

From a Dual history page:

"2002 - Namsung Electronics of Heathrow, Florida purchases the rights to the
Dual name for the Americas territory and begin marketing their own
products under the Dual name. You can find these items at Best Buy Stores."

The Dual history page that Jr_tech linked above says that the German Dual company is no more:

2001 - The Schneider AG company declares insolvency and Dual comes to an end. The assets of Dual are purchased by a Chinese company, TCL Holdings for the distribution network. TCL will begin marketing it's own Chinese made products under the Dual name.

Jr. Tech: Speaking of tubes, don't want to rub it in, but I get a discount on all CBS-Hytron tubes. It's really paid off! I don't even need my tube tester anymore.

I still have my Eico Tube tester out in the garage. Still got a mess of tubes I used in my 1968 tv, also. And some 12AX7's, 12AU7, etc.

I just don't throw things away. Can't get the car in the garage, either..... haven't for 20 years. Come to think of it, I still have that 1968 Heathkit TV out there somewhere, also.....GR295. I think it might still work.

Craig_adams:

Years ago, a friend told me of a tv set in the Portland area he repaired once that would not get the NBC channel (the CBS reception was great)... the problem was a CBS tube! He replaced the CBS tube with a RCA tube, and NBC service was restored! Sounds like a conspiracy to me!

Question(for tube folks): what was the tube type?
