Bison burger with cheese, tomato and onion! Dynamite! Just be careful...it's very lean and gets dry and tough if overcooked. Elk burger is excellent too, especially if you incorporate minced onion and bacon...I like to add some thyme. Tonight we're going to make antelope tacos...that should be interesting. Hey, I'm living in Montana these days, what more can I say? But for a regular beef burger, in my opinion it's hard to beat Fudruckers. Or the Hollywood Burger bar in Portland's Pearl district on Sandy.

Yes. Hollywood Burger Bar. 4211 NE Sandy Blvd. Not far from Pearl St. Station. Darn good burgers...but not the best fries. Best fries I've ever had are at the truck stop in Livingston Montana. If you ever stop by, try 'em...I'm sure you'll agree.

It is a fine joint and I was just funnin' you. I gotta tip my hat to Mark's cafe for a great burger in that neck of the woods too.

On the west side, I remember really enjoying a Vertiburger. I haven't been there since the 80s, and I guess it is gone now.

Further south, I wonder if Herb has noshed in the KC-97?

Ooops...come to think of it...it might not be called Pearl St station anymore. It's been quite a while since I've been in the Hollywood district. Heck, it's been quite a while since I've been in Portland, my birthplace. Things change. Does anyone remember "The Speck??

Sure do -- 50th & Powell & Foster, and 59th & Glisan, right?

Speaking of RIP, it has been a couple years for Circus Burger too -- hasn't it?

I guess that ownership may have changed, but as I recall, the Top O' Hill in Aurora had the best sweet potato fries on the planet.

Right! So many great culinary memories. Portlamd was (and I imagine is) always a place for wonderful eats. Does anyone remember Hilares in the old Lippmans bldg...or the Top Of the Cosmo? How about Shakey's Pizza and the Bomber out in Milwuakee? Is the Bomber still in business...it was one of my favorites!

Speck burgers...my Mom worked there during her high school years, and we used to go there all the time when I was a kid. Loved that place!

Agreed, Littlesongs, Mark Lindsay's place was GREAT! It's been too long between visits.

I wish there was a Sonic nearby...drive-ins like A&W used to be are sooo cool!

I grew up a vegetarian until one fateful day at a birthday party held in a Shakey's Pizza. Pepperoni is an entry drug.

Last I heard, the Bomber itself was being completely restored, but that was mebbe ten years ago. I'll have to dig around -- mebbe Skybill knows.

How about returning to Mark's for the next get-together -- whaddya folks think?

Did'nt there used to be a burger joint over on say Vancouver and Lombard, Frostee Freeze or something like that many moons ago?

Whimpy's in Woodland used to be far out but now just barely OK.

Littlesongs: Works for me!

We used to go to Shakey's in Hazel Dell all the time. I loved watching them make the pizzas through the window. Double pepperoni, please!

Poor Whimpy's: all that construction is gonna swallow that place, I'm afraid. I hope not, it's been there forever. Sorry to hear it's not as good as it used to be.

Best really big hamburger, gotta drive a long way, Lotta Burger on Sand Springs line, between tulsa and Sand Springs. Their about 10 inches across, mustard, pickles, lettace, tommatoes and a hugh piece of meat. And no sissy sesame seed bun.

Darktemper, the last time I drove up I-5 I think I noticed that Whimpy's is no more. Bummer. I used to laugh every time I thought about that line from Popeye!

Thanks, Skybill! Fell in love with it in Santa Fe.
Chocolate Hazelnut shake + Tillamook Pepper Bacon Basket = food coma! Love the blackberry shakes, too!

And the "Greatest Crappy Burger Of All Time" award has to go to White Castle! I've eaten 'em...why, I have no idea...

Having grown up in St. Louis, I know exactly what you mean!

I've never met anybody that just said White Castle's are OK. You either love them or hate them. For me it's the latter!

Don't know if it's still there, but there was a place called the Burger Basket on the cornet of Sprague and Freya in Spokane. They had a colossal burger that was so big, if you ate the whole thing and accompanying fries, you got it for free.

Damn dares from friends and my voracious appetite ... but hey, the price was right! :-)

"I wish there was a Sonic nearby...drive-ins like A&W used to be are sooo cool!"

A few years ago they built a new old-style A&W on US26 on the way to Sandy, at the Hwy 212 exit... drive up, carhops in the summer, trays on the windows, etc. A nostalgic way to get your fast food. Very close to where I live but I've only been a couple of times - I'm trying to stay away from that kind of food. But it was good, standard A&W fare. I miss the Papa, Mama, Baby burgers though.

I have a collection of 4 A&W rootbeer mugs, including the teeny tiny one...holds about 2 oz., I think.

I once took a road trip with friends from Miami to Louisville, KY...that was my first encounter with White Castle. Not only are the burgers awful, so are the fries, but the place was the most popular joint in town! Go figure!

When me and my dad had the tavern we had the Monitor Monster burger which was a seasame seed bun slathered with margarine and toasted on the grill. 2 char grilled 1/3 lb patties with 4 slices of thick cut bacon, 4 slcices of black forrest ham, 2 slices Ameerican cheese, 2 slices processed swiss cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, Fried egg, slatered with 1000 island, and finally topped off by slces of pickle and wedged and held together with a steak knife. Served with your choice of seasoned curly fries, frecnh fries, or tator tots, and if you must subsiturte the fries for something more healthy we would break down and serve you a side salad.

These days at home I like "Uncle Skip's Boat Burgers"
Ground beef or Ground Turkey with fine diced garlic, onions, mushrooms, and cracked black pepper marinated in Worchetershire Sauce and then grilled and serced one of a couple of different ways like open face with mushroom gravy, or with cheese and bacon.

Lost me with your first statement, "seasame seed bun" a real hamburger has a plain bun, none of this health food junk! And a hamburger should have mustard, not salad dressing!

You yankees just don't understand hamburgers.

Business rule #1 is you have to give the cutomers what they want. Our clientele was the most cantecourous sp? set of people in the freaking universe. It was there way or the highway and at the same time extremely loyal they would boycott us if we had to part with one of there favorite bartenders. Oh well you live and learn and we should have never bought the place simply for how clicky old boys club the clientele was and how isolated the place was.

Sonic is coming to Wilsonville. Will be located on the old Post Office site. For you newbies, behind Walgreens, in front of Albertsons and across the street from the future Fred Mayer store.
