How many stations in Eugene/Springfield are actually live (AM drive/middays/PM drive) I know MRB has Magic & NC 93 live during those shifts. Anyone else ?? How can they justify budget wise for a live middays person, when it seems like a throw away shirt....save some money and VT

First of all, I've never thought of middays as a throw-away shift, but I think suits see it that way too often.
I've been out of the market for a couple years, but I believe NRQ is live in Mornings and Afternoons (although who knows how much Al actually VTs). Middays is jock-less. Nights is sometimes live and sometimes VT, I think.

Well the stations that I listen to during the morning and afternoon are live...Jerry Allen (or Dan Mullin when Jerry is out of town for a Duck game) & Al Kline on KUGN and John Mielke on KKNX during AM drive...and the Donkey show on KFLY during PM drive.

The rest of the day on KKNX is satellite-fed...KUGN has Dr. Laura and Sean Hannity...although middays on KFLY is live (as far as I know) with "Montana the Rock Bitch" broadcasting from the studios of their sister station KZZE in Medford.

"La X is live all three shifts."

Yes, live from 6 am to midnight, no voice tracks like El Rey
Morning from Eugene,
Afternoon from Portland
And nights from Yakima WA.

Eugene received about 4 inches of snow today and I observed the following regarding local radio:

At around noon I counted 5 Eugene area AM stations with silent carriers, presumably due to snow on their satellite dishes with no live bodies around to sweep them off. Out of 24 AM and FM stations in the market, I found only one with live & local weather and traffic info. That station was little ol' KKNX 840 AM, a stand-alone oldies station. The station owner/morning personality, John Mielke ("Mel-Kay"), was apparently the only one in town who cared enough to come in to work on a Sunday morning to do what the so called "News Talk" stations, KPNW and KUGN should have been doing.

The reason why this might have continued for a period of time is because the dishes might not be located at the studio or even the transmitter site. They might be at Baldy Ridge, Floral Hill, Coburg Hills, Murray Hill or Buck Mtn.

I remember when "Sunny 910" went off because of snow in the dish. Most would have thought the dish was at the transmitter site in the lowlands on N.E. 158th Ave. but Sunny's dish was on Sentinal Hill in Healy Heights, meaning the engineer had to get up to around 1,000 feet during a snow storm.

Engineers don't usually have a company 4 wheel drive at their disposal. It's usually their vehicle that's used in this kind of maintenance.

In Roseburg, we had close to 4 inches in some areas, with 2 inches in the main part of the city.
Here at Brooke Communications, we had staff during updates starting in early afternoon when things really started to stick. We did live break- in coverage on KQEN, our N/T/S station, plus produced or live updates on our other stations. We also updated info on our websites continuously. We had a live person in until almost 8pm to take calls, watch for closure emails, and add information to the list.

Can't speak for Eugene, but thats how we handled it here in Roseburg.

I think Roseburg is more community oreiented than Eugene is. I don't think any radio station in Eugene was live for any kind of updates. What the hell kind of service is that.

This is the very reason that the FCC is looking into re-applying the 24 hour live ops station.

That alone is worth it's own thread.

Hey Kyle, glad to hear that the old Roseburg spirit is still alive!!
KYKN in Salem was live and ready from 5am on Monday all day.
We had callers on the streets with reports, live in studio updates and more.
It will always be the smaller independently owned stations that will SERVE the listeners. All others are there for bucks only.
They forgot what radio is here for, the listener. They are who we serve.

I was running the board last Sunday morning on MRB's KKNU-FM when Eugene had the snow. I went live with breakins and the audience seemed to really appreciate the updates. Unfortunately, I did not have time to take Magic and Bob live as well. Too bad most stations can't do that now due to lack of real live people.

Then I stand corrected that both KKNU and KKNX had snow reports.
