This day in Oregon History:

Buttermilk Creek flows through Philomath into the Mary's River. A letter in the January 15, 1942 edition of the Philomath Review from F.S. Minshall explained the creek's name:

"Years ago a creamery operated along this brook and ran its surplus buttermilk into the drain. When summer came, the resulting odor aroused indignation among residents.

"Various methods, including the appointment of a 'smelling committee' by the Council, were unsuccessful at eliminating the stench. The creamery finally went out of business, but the name 'Butter Milk' still remains."

It must be a weird day when the births include Gene Krupa, Captain Beefheart, Charo and Ronnie Van Zant, and the deaths include Dee Murray and Harry Nilsson.

In 1955, A young singer named Elvis Presley performs at the Louisiana Hayride, Municipal Auditorium, Shreveport, Louisiana. In the audience is "Colonel" Tom Parker, who was witnessing Elvis for the first time.

On the very same day, Billboard magazine reports that "music with an R&B beat is not longer regarded as a passing phase by major recording firms," citing the recent success of white pop covers of R&B hits.

Just six years later, the Supremes signed to Motown Records. They joined a group of artists with more than just talent and "music with an R&B beat." It was the Sound of Young America and it took the world by storm.

DT, I didn't forget. That was a most excellent thread BTW.

I started this one for weird, obscure things.

Never did like the Cone heads much when they first were on although I enjoy watching old SNL skits with them now!

Ok, here's one:

Most solar pocket calculators actually have an "off" function. It's generally a combination of some keys and the "AC" key, which will activate the calculator after it's 7-15 minute power down cycle has elapsed.

The most common ones to feature this "off" functionality are those with some kind of battery assist.

Nobody puts the off key into the machines, because the default mode is to just put the thing away, letting the power down take care of things. It is often a part of the chip spec though, and the matrixed keyboard will most often provide that key code combination.

Another one: Most digital watches have a reset, test jumper circuit board pad on them. Running the watch, open, with a small wire can trigger this and sometimes a diagnostic mode, and other modes! Many digital watches have similar functions, disabled by traces on their board.

There.

Bummer. The only solar calculator I have has a "Off" button on it!

I wanted to try and outsmart it!
