Here's something you don't see that often. A major FM station shutting down. KOAY "97.5, The Oasis" is licensed to Coalville, Utah with 89,000 watts and 6 booster stations in Salt Lake City, Provo, Ogden, Park City, Bountiful & Sandy.

This from All Access:

SIMMONS MEDIA GROUP Christian AC KOAY (97.5 THE OASIS)/SALT LAKE CITY went dark after midnight on WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 2nd.

The website simply states, "SIMMONS MEDIA regrets that our lease with the company that owns KOAY, MILLCREEK BROADCASTING (which is in bankruptcy), was teminated by a court on their behalf."

The bankruptcy filing was made in JUNE 2007 (NET NEWS 6/29).

Question, in radio's current environment, do you know of any Oregon or Washington stations close to the edge at present time?

Seems like a good opportunity now for KLOVE-AIR1.
Don't have strong coverage in area and would'nt doubt that they have already checked into it.

Most ownership/management would never comment about stations vulnerabilies...they'll always have a positive spin...

"the oasis" was a great name for an Evangelical Station in SLC, Utah.
And of course that would be why it is no longer around.

Would be interesting to see what lead to their financial struggles...certainly was not because of signal coverage...5 booster stations all on same frequency around metro...but maybe...that might of caused a lot multipath and other problems?!

What exactly is 'major' about a flamethrower in the middle of nowhere? The primary station transmitter is 42 miles from the nearest point in the Salt Lake valley, and it is behind the Wasatch Front. 3 of the 5 translators are clustered around Ensign Peak with very lower power signals and directional antennas to avoid interference to each other. This is a second-adjacent signal to 97.1FM (a class C operating from Farnsworth Peak). Not to mention 97.1FM is running HD carriers as well. All this in a market that is overloaded with signals.
Banking on the success of rimshot signals may have helped Millcreek's demise.

Chris: You're right. Wanted to use different words other than "high power" which I used in the header. Should have stuck with them. The 89kw rimshot was impressive power to me, plus the coverage map on "recnet" showed KOAY as non-directional.

Trust me, nothing! I worked for a dual-stick FM in South Dakota with each transmitter having 100,000 watts, and I think we reached MAYBE 100,000 people! Keep in mind we blanketed a third of the state! FYI- it was KGIM-FM-Aberdeen and KBWS-Sissedon. The station(s) were known as "Pheasant Country".
