Was wondering if someone has the lineup for the Z morning Zoo in the 80's. I know that there were some changes but I'm trying to find out for my wife a girl that worked there on the air with all the guys in the 80's.

Thanks

It was John Murphy, Dan-O Clark, and Val Ring for sure. I think it was the 90s before Nelson was on. "Humble" Billy Hayes was a host for a couple of years in the early 90s while John Murphy wasn't with the station.

Kim Matthews did Middays, I think in the late 80's, early 90's. followed by Stephanie steel, and then Stacey Lynn.

I worked with the Morning ZOO from time to time as their producer (93-97). I worked with Billy Hayes, Scott Thrower, John Murphy, Val Ring, Tony Martinez, Nelson. Dan Clark came back to the station while I was there and Chet Buchanan also hosted mornings for awhile I was there.

Chet, Dan and Tony worked at Z in the 80s and I remember Scott Drake too.

I was too busy broadcasting on Hot A/C stations at the time so I don't remember others currently.

Tony Martinez must have worked at Z100 for a long time because I remember listening to him back in 86' The year I graduated high School. (gulp) I wonder if that guy will ever return to radio?? Id love to hear Tony Martinez back on the air, but It sounds like he is having a lot of fun, flying around in that helicopter for Good Day Oregon.

Damn.....Z100 used to sound so good! What the hell happend to that station???? Do kids these days even care who the talent is on that station???

For kids, generally speaking, it is all about the music. They are not loyal to a particular station, per se. They will change the station when something is on they don't like or the commercials and talk starts in.

The female talent on the Zoo back in the 80's was probably Val Currey (the first traffic reporter), Lorna D or Brooke Belson.

Geez am I off, I though Z100 in the 80's was Scott Shannon?

That was the REAL Z100.
The one in PDX was a lame rip off.

Has everybody already forgotten about Ricky Rocco? I used to watch him on channel 49 years ago.

(Stoner, what is he up to these days?)

"Damn.....Z100 used to sound so good! What the hell happend to that station???? Do kids these days even care who the talent is on that station???"

Well, our good "friend" Otto Mayshun--another Cheap Channel employee--took it over post-1996, as I understand, as he also did KKCW, KEX and the other Jacor properties. Personally, there hasn't really been any decent "talent" on there since about that period. In general I have to agree with Jimbo here.

(I gave up on the Z probably in 2000 or so; haven't really bothered tuning much past KOPB, KBOO and El Rey since then.)

But then I put a satellite dish up on my roof (and now balcony), pointed it at Echostar 7, and everything for me at that point changed for good............

At a young age (8yrs)the experience he had set the stage for him to enter the world of entertainment. Murph works at New Wave Entertainment as a producer & writer.

Motozak2-
I was at Z100 until 97'. All jocks were still live. The top 30 countdown the morning Zoo did was for the most part pre-recorded unless they were doing a remote during the same time.

Digital technology was really helping the production gods during that time like Matt Jones. I wasn't around when they started voice tracking day parts.

Z100 Died the day the day Stacey Lynne, Dr, Doug, Nelson, Ck left the station. Those were the last truely great "talents" on that station. And those are just a few of the awesome air talents on that station. Lets not forget jocks like Dk. Erickson, Rich E Cunningham, Mike Chase, Lara, Tony Martinez. I could go onn forever, that station used to have some of the best talents in the country!

Today Z100 is talentless, I tried listening today and had to laugh at how bad that station sounds.
"more music less talk" is the liners they are running on Z100!! So basically they are saying, we no longer want to pay for good air talent, so here is a lot of music with crappy voice tracked liners droped in between the songs.
Clear channel is 100% to blame for the way Z100 sounds today. Im guessing if Jacor owned the station today it would sound awesome! Thankfully I've kept all my tapes that I have recorded off Z100 going way back to the Mike Chase days when he did Afternoons on Z100. Good Stuff!

Hey Man!! GB was the one who took KKRZ from the "ROSE" to Z-100. He established the brand on good talent and great radio.

As good as Nelson and Dr Doug may have been even they were not as good as Z-100 with Gary Bryan/Dan Clark, Sean Lynch, Scott Drake, and Chet B. all first class people to work with and for as well as first class talent.

Those were the names that made Z-100.

Notalent-

I will not disagree with the lineup that really put Z100 on the map. But you can build upon your success. In the 90s Z100 added equally talented people from full time to part-time and the beat went on.

Like KGW of the 70s, they kept adding great talent when others moved on.

People talk about how radio is dying. Well...Turn on Z100 today and you will see why. Its such a shame that they don't value talent on that station anymore. That station used to be such a power house. It amazes me how a company like Cheap Channel can get ahold of that station and wipe out all the creativity, not to mention all the great talent.

You don't have great radio without great talent!!

Ps- Does anybody know where we could hear some airchecks from Gary bryan and his early days with Z100??? Id love to hear some of his talk breaks!

I've wondered if Brian Thomas, the CBS programmer who just had "VP Programming Classic Hits" added to his duties, was the same one with the british accent who worked mornings for KISN when they were Classical, moved on to KMJK and was then raided from there by Z100 at the very beginning to team with Gary Bryan.

I have an aircheck somewhere from the "original" Z100 Morning Zoo with Brian Thomas, Mark Gerek & Val Curry. It's from the first few weeks of Z100, a few months before Gary Bryan was hired and the legendary Morning Zoo was formed later in the summer of '84. They used alot of material off the old "LA Air Force" albums.

Except for mornings, when "The Rose" switched to Z100, there were no jocks for the first month or so...just pre-recorded liners and promos. If I recall correctly, the first "live" Z100 line-up was Mark Newell 10a-3p, Scott Drake 3p-7p & Peter Lett 7p-Mid. I can't remember who was doing the all-night shift. It may have been Dennis Nakata, but I'm not sure.

After the format switch to Z100 in March 1984, Mark Newell was the acting PD & I was the acting MD. This only lasted a month or two, until Gary Bryan arrived in mid-June.

From notes I took after posting the Z100 history in June 2003: The pre-recorded liners, promos & music were played by Scott Drake & Randy Scott. Later, Matt Jones was board operator midnight to 6.

Z100 began on March 16, 1984 in the wee hours of the morning. "I Write The Songs" by Barry Manilow was cut in the middle as the transmitter was powered down for about 10 minutes of dead air. The carrier came back up, then the sound of a newborn baby crying and the announcement "Attention Portland... This is Portland's new Hot FM....Z100." The song "Rock The Casbah" by The Clash began to play.

I believe most of this info came from Matt Jones.

Any ideas where Peter Lett went? I went to MT Hood with him and Matt Jones... I think Matt is still at Z100, but haven't heard anything about Peter in years. I remember a few wild weekends with Peter when he was at Z and I was down in the Valley at KIQY.

Jeff...I was at Mt. Hood also, early '80s, also with Matt Jones. Remember Naganuma and Dave Spacek as "adjunct professors"? I still see John Rice around town sometimes.

Man I'm trying to remember what year it was.. I only went one year and then got hired at KIQY full time. I think it was '82-83... I know that Matt was there.. I think it was his second year. Peter and I started together and I didn't go back for the second year. Steve Hired me at KMJK to run AT40 for the summer after my first year and I never went back. I was also working PT at KVAN for Paul Duckworth, who I work with once again 25 years later. Paul is the PD at WMAL (ABC\Citadel) in Washington DC and I work for Citadel Corporate.

I'm not sure what your real name is and really the only people that I really remember for MT Hood are Matt and Peter.

Long journey in a small industry.

From the December 8, 2007 All Access:

Duckworth Retiring From WMAL

CITADEL Talk WMAL-A/WASHINGTON Operations Dir. PAUL DUCKWORTH tells ALL ACCESS that he's trying his hand at retirement effective DECEMBER 31st.
DUCKWORTH, who previously worked at, among other stops, KOMO-A and KVI-A/SEATTLE and KPAM-A/PORTLAND, says that while "I could never promise that, at some point, I won't re-surface somewhere in the biz ... right now the plan is to sleep a little later, spend more time with family and pursue a few things that I haven't been able to get to over the last 35 years."

Sounds like you were a year behind me. Neither you or Peter's names ring a bell. I also remember KC Weist (McCoy) there around the same time, who bounced around the PDX airwaves doing shift work for awhile in the '80s.

I never worked in the industry, though I did finish my Associates in radio...got sidetracked by a good job offer being an audio-visual technician, and went a different direction with my career path. Did some intern work at KEX and at a small station in Eugene. Did a little voice work for a friend, and that's about it. Have been thinking about seeing what it takes to get back into doing voice work...

Thanks Craig - I missed the news about Paul in All Access and there were no "internal" memo's about it. thanks!

Steve - 82-83 was your first year at MT Hood I seem to remember and I still credit you for being the person that really got me excited about radio. Its an excitement that I still have today although my current job is not anything that I could have dreamed about back then. thanks!!!

We could start an entire thread about MT Hood and the people that have passed through there.

Andy - I remember the name but can't put a face to it. Are you the Andy that went to San Diego from KIQY? At one time I tried to sit down and figure out how many different people I worked with in my 12 years at KIQY\KXPC. I started there with Brian Burns and Ken Moultrie (I finally hooked up with Ken after 25 years last year at CRS here in Nashville) and left after it we changed it to KXPC with people like Ron Leonard and Jim Rose. In that time SO many people came through like Dr. Doug (we brought him to Oregon from NORCAL), Scott "Loose" Lockwood, Bill Lundun................ Great memories

Thanks!

Whatever happened to Dave Spacek? (Since he worked at 100.3 FM prior to the Z100 years, this isn't really hijacking the thread, is it?)

He was a fun guy to have as a teacher at Mt. Hood back in 1980. Some of the people from my class back then that made a career in radio included the late Kevin Reily, KC Weist/McCoy, Rich Patterson and Jim Dorman.

Gary Bryan is still as good on the air as he's ever been. When I worked for KLOVE in Sacramento, I could hear him doing mornings on KFRC (mid 90's)... Now I listen to him from time to time on
