Whats the best (music) radio station in the country?? Is it in Portland, or is it in Tampa? Lets give some love to our favorite radio station, and then people can go check them out on the web and see why this station is soooo GREAT!! You have to fully expalin why you love this music station. Is it because they have a full live airstaff with great jocks?? Or maybe they have a really unique playlist that plays deeper tracks instead of the same moldy oldy songs.

Let em Rip! And no, Im not talking about farting!

I think it would have to be broken down by markets. To choose one station would be unrealistic.

Hahahahahahaha! I am surprised that "Beano" has not yet posted something about Charlie being the best station in the country. To which, "Justin Timberfake" agrees and piles on more Charlie love, which was probably the point of this post anyway.

Where is djfrreshhh? Would LOVE to hear his in depth analysis of the national radio talent pool.

Well, when I go to Tampa, every year, radio stations there sound better than they do hear, overall. Better selection of music, IMHO.

How could anybody possibly make a good-faith effort at answering this question? One would have to sample thousands of radio stations to make this determination.

Yeah, it's a moot question. The answer, of course, is whatever YOU think the best radio station is.....

Every station (good, bad or indifferent) is someone's favorite.

Thats the whole point of this thread! What do you think is the best station! I figured that people have tuned into stations while on vacationn or on business that they have really enjoyed! I thought it would be cool to hear about them.

I can't say what the best station is... or even pick one that I think is the best. But here are some I listen to online regularly:

KQRC/Kansas City- 98.9 The Rock: Heritage, dominant morning show, music is well programmed, killer afternoon jock.

KQRA/Springfield, MO- Q102.1: The music is well programmed, imaging is good and the jocks are good small-market jocks.

KXXR/Minneapolis-St. Paul, MN- 93X: "Half Assed Morning Show" is freakin hilarious (go listen to some of their bits online), the music kicks ass, the jocks are awesome, and this is one of the tightest sounding stations anywhere.

KDWB/Minneapolis-St. Paul, MN- 101.3 KDWB: this is probably one of the best CHRs in the country. Dave Ryan in the mornings is amazing, Scotty Davis is awesome, and this is another one of the tightest sounding stations. They also do a great job of being local and tying into the community like no one else.
*side note- The Twin Cities is one of the best markets... there are several great stations there. Lots of good radio.

KYSR/Los Angeles- Star98.7: I've always been a sucker for Modern AC... I wish it had been a more popular format. But this is a good one.

I know I'm forgetting some that I like, but there's a few.

In no particular order:

KPIG 107oink5, Freedom CA - Americana/AAA/Eclectic

WLNG Sag Harbor NY - Oldies/classic PAMS jingles

KNND Cottage Grove - Swap'n'Shop and other small town block programming (No streaming)

KLYT "M88" Albuquerque - Christian CHR

KNGY "Energy 927" San Francisco - Dance/Techno/Gym work-out music

CFNY Edge102 Toronto - Modern Rock

WFMU NJ/NYC - the most influential weird college station anywhere

Still looking for a classic country station as good as KCKX Stayton was.

Ok, here we go:

CFMI 101.1 Vancouver BC - Classic Rock

CBC Radio 1 - Anytown Canada(99.1 Toronto/690 AM Vancouver)

KOPB - Arguably one of the best NPR/Public radio affiliates in the country...would love to see a bit more local coverage, though.

Although I'm not into "Modern Rock", I would have to agree with Randy's inclusion of 102.1 The Edge from Toronto. I liked seeing their storefront studios on the west side of Yonge Street every time I walked by them. A close second place station for modern rock would be Power 98 in Winnipeg...good station, but the less said about the 'Peg, the better...let's suffice it to say, that I couldn't wait to get outta that town! :-)

KNND also has the intersting "window to the world" studio on Main Street in Cottage Grove.

I believe the original question was best radio station in the country. While he didn't specify which country, I figured it was safe to assume he meant the U.S.
Besides, I don't like listening to stations that play 50% crappy Canadian artists.

OK, I'll play...

#1 KGO-AM San Francisco
#2 Howard Stern ch.100 & 101, Sirius satellite
#3 Bluegrass ch.65, Sirius satellite
#4 KEX-AM Portland

And, for what's it worth, I agree with Randy in Eugene about KCKX/Stayton. A damned good little station in it's prime.

BTW...Have a great Christmas, everyone!

How 'bout the most unimaginative, most scraed to take a chance radio station in the country? Actually, two stations are tied for that dishonor....KLOG/KUKN in Kelso/Longview, Washington.

Listen to it today, then pop in an air check from 10 to 15 or 20 years agho. No difference whatsoever.

And I've spent plenty of time in Tampa and Central Florida. I didn't hear one station that jumped out and "grabbed me" as being leaps and bounds better than the best stations in Portland.

During the day, CBC radio 1 can be heard on 6.160 MHz shortwave; this is a simulcast of Vancouver's 690 CBU.

KGO deserves some recognition, even though it is not a music radio station. This is the station that launched Dr. Dean Edell!! Dr. Bill Wattenberg and Carell are pretty good, too.

Back in the late 1990s, I had a chance to hear San Francisco's KABL, during it's "swing" format. It was an interesting twist on nostalgia that had swing, including contemporary stuff, and some classic showtunes but did not play any 1970s/1980s MOR. It was almost like New York's WQEW but heavier on the swing music.

I listen to 690 occasionally when I am working nights. Sometimes I have known it to blast in loud enough that it sounds like it could almost be a local station, albeit a somewhat lower-powered one.

Oh yeah, I also used to listen to 6160 on my DX302 sometimes at work...........

I loved Live 105 when Mark Hamilton was on the air there. KFOG could quite possibly be the best anywhere, most definitely in the Bay. KGO was always nothing more than an impossible competitor to me as I slaved away in the market next door at KSRO so I never fell in love with them.

But of course I work for the best cluster in the world so I can't pick just ONE! (obligatory contractual mention, please forgive! haha!)

I ran into a snag with the CBU stream because I don't have Windows Media Player 11 installed, but managed to deconstruct the link to get http://www.cbc.ca/livemedia/cbcr1-vancouver.asx into WinAmp.

Just came back from the Bay area and would have to agree with Cbatch. One of my reasons for loving the area is the opportunity to listen to KFOG. They truly are about the music. Also, kinda cool to hear that..."Bonnie Raitt or Chris Isaak or Carlos Santana will be doing a free benefit concert this weekend. Admission is two cans of food for the food bank".......
Great city with great radio. The birthplace of album radio, and still relatively progressive.

Charlie.

YOU hands down [along with your stellar playlist] are the reason why KLOO-FM is unquestionably #1.

Keep digging deep into those Ozark Mt. Daredevils tracks [there's gold in them thar hills...and You Know Like I Know by OMDD's Larry Lee remains my personal fave]. We'll have everyone else on this thread there, too.

Happy New Year, my top-notch radio friend.
