I hear Bustos wants to sell these two stations.
Could it be they want an FM?

Actually KMUZ is on 1010 AM

1010 is a daytime only signal.
1150 has very limited coverage at night.
1230 is a "graveyard" signal that has limited night coverage due to interference from other 1230s.

In the areas to the west of Portland (Hillsboro, Cornelius, Forest Grove, etc.), 1150 is mediocre during the day and not receivable at night. 1010 is weak but listenable on a good radio, away from interference sources. 1230 is difficult to pick up without a really sensitive radio. None of these signals have ever brought in good ratings for Bustos. Although I'm sure that Bustos would love to put La Grande on an FM signal more powerful than KRYP's, I suspect that the real motivation for dumping these other signals is to make some quick cash and cut losses.

1150 should be more than mediocre when they go to 10kw during the daytime. The signal will extend to the east, west and south. It should be pretty solid in the metro area.

Back in the 80's I use to get KKEY almost as strong as KEX in Salem during the day. You can tell they need an antenna tune up.

Do they still use the old antenna site on 4th Plain for transmitting 1150?

Meanwhile, the old KKEY building looks like it is for lease.....again. (At least it was when I drove by there a month ago.)

I live on 62ND Ave right off 4th plain. I moved to Vancouver in March of '06. I've noticed that there are only two towers at this sight now, but when i first moved, there were three. I believe the current sat photo on Google earth shows 3 towers.
Being an amateur musician of sorts, I always hear this station in the background while recording tracks to PC.
Also recently licensed as a ham, i've noticed its not a good thing to live so close to an AM broadcast station!
I never listened to KKEY but now wish I would have after reading all the great things about it on this forum. Wish I could've toured that old building on 4th plain when it was...
One big thing I've wondered is where are the actual transmitters now? For the last year or so, the building was being used by a traffic control company.

The center tower was recently removed. It was discussed in detail here at the time.
Before they built the townhouse-style condos on Stapleton, you could clearly see the three tower bases from the street.

I believe the transmitter, phasor and assorted equipment are now contained within a new transmitter shack and that the old building, still belonging to Florinda Weagant, is basically empty.
