hi everyone. I moved to the east coast, and haven't posted on here in a while. I just saw this ad. Read it, and you'll see my comments at the bottom;

Overnights in Central P-A
WARM 103.3, Central P-A's A/C leader has a full time opening for an overnight personality. Our previous overnight talent was recently promoted to afternoon drive. Can you relate to a 30 something mom with a couple of kids?
Can you multi task? You'll also be responsible for making news calls and keeping our other two stations on track.
Show me what you've got. Short aircheck and resume to david.russell@cumulus.com. Cumulus Media is an EOE.

Ummm, why would somone working OVERNIGHTS, when 30 something moms and kids are sleeping , have to relate to 30 something moms and kids?

Does this make any sense to you?

Well, clearly it's because it's a training ground for higher profile dayparts, as the previous occupant shows.

The mysterious thing in that ad is that Central PA's A/C leader even HAS an all-night personality.

There's a lot of not only 30-something moms with a couple of kids working overnight jobs like newspaper delivery, telephone customer service, overnight cashier, waitstaff, motel front desk, and such, but a lot of other people as well just trying to make a decent buck they only way they know how, at the only time of the day (night) that they could get a job.

So, yes, the ad makes perfect sense to me.

(sarcasm)
Y'know, maybe we ought to tell Newportradio... strike that - nevermind.
(end sarcasm)

The way I read it, a "30-something mom with a couple of kids" describes the station's core listener. The kids aren't part of the equation. The mom IS during any daypart!

Thanks for thinking of me.

No quality of life needs for me there, but I will tell you that in the past, I pursued openings to the Pittsburgh "WARM" station which is only an hour away and an easy commute, and yes I think I relate to the core audience. Wasn't hired because I am too far away and not LOCAL...... go figure.

(I finally gave up the chase. Cleaned out all the demos and radio stuff from the computer, haven't looked at the wanteds in months. Still have an interest in what's going on, but..........)

Merry Christmas to all. Thanks for some fun times and interesting discussions.....

Roger.

"You'll also be responsible for making newscalls..."

Who the hell's miaking newscalls at 2am?

"Excuse me, Mr. Mayor......yes, I know it's the middle of the night, but it's the only time i can reach you....do you have a moment to discuss the city task force on gang activity...?"

Oh, news people, from back in the days of halfway adequate staffing, know what they're talking about. Nobody's waking up the mayor. You call up all the overnight dispatchers in your counties and ask if anything's going on. Most times no, but sometimes yes. Plus, in making these calls, you strike up a rapport with your fellow night creatures and occasionally they tip you off to a decent story.

It's interesting how many people find the elements of WARM's ad to be absurd, when actually they're doing things that were basic to a decent station before things were whittled down to what they are now.

Ya, they want somebody that can move up and not be a permanent "dark hole midnight mole". Actually they sound smarter than the average broadcast management around these days. The approach sounds familiar and old school to me, and that is certainly alright in my book.

It makes me wonder if "news calls" is a poorly-worded way of saying that the person in this position will make judgement calls about which news stories air and whisch don't.

I would think, as most reasonable people would, that the overnight talent makes the calls, gets the info, then hands it off to the ND whenever he/she comes in for the next day's news prep.

When I was an all-night jock, I didn't make news calls. I made coffee, and three bucks an hour.
