This is terrific news, and really notches up the oldies radio wars.

From today's R&R:

"CBS Radio classic hits KLTH (K-Hits 106.7)/Portland, Ore., will kick off 2008 with a new lineup, mostly comprised of parts found around the house.

The big addition, though, is the return of Dave Hood to the market, and he'll be doing mornings on K-Hits starting Jan. 8. Hood is extremely well-known in the market for his top-rated afternoon show on KGW/Portland before making the jump to TV.

Meanwhile, hold onto something as we describe the spinning of the rest of the lineup that will also occur on Jan. 8: Hood's arrival will move former morning guy Dave McKay to noon-4pm; Brad Dolbeer, who had been doing 10 a.m. – 3 p.m., will now take over 9 a.m.-noon; afternoon driver Steve Lloid pushes back his shift an hour and will now run 4-8 p.m.; and Jeff Thomas will start his night shift an hour later to go 8 p.m.-midnight"

Dave was part of the legendary "Mike Phillips" lineup at KGW in the late 70's...

Craig & John- Mornings
Glynn Shannon - Middays
Dave Hood - Afternoons
John Williams, Jim Donovan, Steve Lloid, Scott Tom all held down the 6-10p and 10p-2a shifts at various times.

Welcome home Dave.

Well now its finally on the main page of the R/R site. Wow I used to listen to Hood when I was uh very young... Live high quality people on all day,...what a concept! Honestly do think Dolbeer should be on KINK though...

Almost enough to make me want to move back to Portland!

When our kids were smaller we would get from the library Dave's series of video's called "There Goes a Train" or a dump truck or a craine etc...

They were made for younger kids and Dave's daughter Robin, whom I remember seeing walking the halls of KGW as a little girl, helped produce those video's.

Interesting news.

For those who are curious about the thread title spelling, listen to Dave's KGW jock jingle from the mid 70's.

50kw: "voice tracked from san diego...welcome home BS!"

Dave Hood is in the process of moving to the Portland area. We're very excited having Dave joining the K-Hits Team! For me it's been a dream over the years working with many of these KGW Pros, never thinking I'd ever get a chance to work with Dave Hood!

Tdanner: Wish You could have been at the monthly jock meeting December 5th. Most of us were out of the loop on this. There was no E-Mail announcement.

We were all sitting at the meeting table, I was facing Steve Lloid and the glass door. Steve's back was to the door. I think Dennis saw Dave from his side view through the glass door and began telling us he had hired a new morning man. Just then Dave appears through the glass door and I'm thinking I know that face but couldn't place him.

Now Dave comes through the door and no one has said who he is. Dave says Hi to Steve Lloid who has to turn around and when he does, it was something to see! Steve is first Shocked! Then comes his famous laugh! They're both gitty! I'm wondering, what am I missing here? Everyone is just watching this. Then Dennis says it's Dave Hood! My reaction "OH MY GOD!!".

After the meeting Carol Batcheler took Dave to the KUPL Studio to surprise Rick "Bubba" Taylor who I believe was just starting in radio and I'm thinking was an Intern at KGW, answering request phone calls for Dave.

Not wanting to miss another radio moment, I tagged along. Bubba was also shocked! Nothing was said to Bubba about why Dave was here but I wondered if word was going to leak out. K-Hits jocks were told, this was a big secret until the press release. Dave then went into the K-Hits Studio to take a look around which seemed to be his first time.

During the jock meeting I asked Dave to give us a rundown as to where he had worked before. Here's his station bio after doing a little research on each station:

(1969) KREW Sunnyside, Bennett Broadcasting Co.
KENE Toppenish, Radio Broadcasting, Inc.
KMWX Yakima, Cascade Broadcasting Co.
KREM Spokane, King Broadcasting Co.
KGW Portland, King Broadcasting Co.

KGW (1976) 10:00pm to 2:00am shift.
KGW (1977) 2:00pm to 6:00pm shift.
Forgot to ask when he left KGW for "PM Magazine".

Allright! Great to hear a NW born and bred solid radio personality is coming back to Portland. Where has Dave been since we last heard him on Sixty-Two K-G-W in the early 1980's?

Golly don't leave ME out of the morning mix for heaven's sake... I can't believe I will be working with yet another big time jock I grew up listening to as a kid in OC back in the 70s and 80s.
Don't post much on here, but I do delight in reading my buddy Craig's wonderful tidbits of radio history. Hey thanks for tagging along into the KUPL studio that day Craig, I'm sure Leela K was wondering why she had a full house of squawkboxes while she was trying to work! lol...

Carol: There's nothin' like havin' a bunch of jocks in the booth when you're tryin' to start your show! Poor Leela K, she took it very well.

Sorry I wasn't thinking (again!) about Dave being your new morning partner, or all the other new jocks at K-Hits:

Along with Dave Hood & Carol Batchelor weekday mornings. K-Hits has also brought aboard Jason Miller overnights as of December 5th. Jason has been Mark Lindsay's Show Producer at the Cafe and will continue in that position.

Another new K-Hits jock is Mike Porter who will begin weekend overnights (Saturday & Sunday) on December 29th. Mike also works fulltime at KBZY. In 1988 Mike worked for Kisn-FM under the names Mike Mason & Keith Young before moving to KUPL-FM.

These three new additions are the first changes to the K-Hits jock line-up since May 2006 when K-Hits filled all DJ time slots for the first time. This of course is not counting Carl Batchelor, who came aboard July 27th as K-Hits News Director.

From what I'm reading, there's *very little* consumer demand for it yet. And if programming offered is nothing more than "jukebox," I don't call that a compelling reason to invest in the required equipment...And I'm normally a gadget freak...

My previous comment was insensitive but I'm always reading negative press from people who've never heard the system and a little bit goes a long way! KOPB-HD2, for one, isn't a jukebox. I'm sure there are others and there will be more. This is the time of the 10,000 songs in a row, to get people sampling the product without being weighed down with spots. The car and receiver manufacturers are starting to fall in line and the chip that makes portable application feasible is just around the corner. It took FM about 25 years before it really started to take off! Give it some time.

There goes semoochie again, hijacking threads. Can we can the HD discussions (or move it somewhere else) and get back to the original topic?

For me - I think it's gratifying to see CBS investing in hiring talent rather than just seeing it as an expense. And I think Dan Mason and the reborn CBS-FM/NYC has a lot to do with it.

Agreed.

Also, most people's equipment these days is crap. Not everyone, but many in the general public have trouble receiving anything but the highest-powered stations. My guess is everyone here is not a member of the general public that I'm thinking of.

Well, I'll take part of the blame for it too, so don't blame Semoochie...

Doesn't CBS seem to staff ALL their stations 24 hours a day? That's the case here in Phoenix...and it strikes me as being pretty close company-wide. Increasingly rare these days...

And, to complete the return of the thread to the original subject, how will Dave Hood manage to get his webbed feet back after spending some good times in the sunshine of the "World's Finest City?" He KNOWS what he's in for this winter! (And I watch Portland webcams and keep in touch with family when the snow threatens up there!)

I'm spoiled after 17 years in the desert, but I still treasure my time when I come up to visit the Rose City!

Thanks Mark! I didn't bring up the subject but rather, was responding to someone else's point. In search of information about Dave Hood, I went to his website and found airchecks from both KGW and K-Earth! I couldn't find anything else about his whereabouts other than PM Magazine and the children's programming he's involved in.

Looking for the ratings number analysis, they felt he could shore up the AM and the rest of the talent was considered still valuable to keep so they have strange shift times. If people come back because of him, thens its coup for CBS

I don't think I have ever heard Mr Hood, I moved here in 1999. Hired for a Y2K project and the company offered me a permanant position.

I am looking forward to hearing someone that by all accounts knows 60's and 70's music, and is a good personality!

Let's ask a hypothetical question. If, instead of putting this lineup on 106.7, KHITS, they put it on 970AM KCMD with the exact same playlist and personalities, would you still listen to it over anything else??? Even call it KHITS.

The airshifts on k-hits are really odd, that being said, Its great to have a radio station that is actually putting on "GREAT RADIO".

Clear Channels' Kool 1059 has no chance of winning! They invest zero money into their product, the jocks sound voiced tracked and there is no pulse to that statuion, IT SOUNDS DEAD!!!!!!!!

With K-hits investing time and money into the station by Adding Live Air talent on Most of the dayparts, does that mean other stations will follow??? Charlie needs live djs through out the day and Kool 105.9 Needs a lot of things, live Dj's and contests.

If it was on AM, I wouldn't listen to it as much, because of reception problems.

When KISN became AM, I listened to it as much as I could, but the reception wasn't very good in Washougal.

CBS, unlike Entercom and especially CC, only owns stations in the largest markets. When you consider that, it's easy to see why they haven't developed much of a "regional hub" system like CC did for VTing and featuring talent who is too good to otherwise broadcast in a small market.

-----------------MARTINEZ TO MORNINGS IN PORTLAND------------------

Former CLEAR CHANNEL Talk KFI/LOS ANGELES producer VICKY MARTINEZ has been named producer/sidekick for CBS RADIO Classic Hits KLTH (K-HITS)/PORTLAND's DAVE HOOD Morning Show, which just debuted this morning (MONDAY, 1/7). MARTINEZ has also produced talk shows for KTLK/LOS ANGELES, as well as producing red carpet coverage of THE ACADEMY AWARDS, EMMY AWARDS, SCREEN ACTORS GUILD AWARDS and other star-studded events.

"When I heard VICKY’s voice, I knew she would be absolutely great on the show," HOOD said. "It’s been a blast getting to know her and I think we are going to put some serious fun on the airwaves."

"I've just fallen in love with PORTLAND already," said MARTINEZ. "I'm learning how to pronounce street names and such, counting on the audience to help me out with this stuff! The whole K-HITS staff has really been so welcoming and I'm excited to get on the air."

I like Vicky Martinez, she sounds like an actual air personality. And she has that one thing most air people lack, she's funny. It's also great that she does not sound like an announcer.

Dave is an improvement also, he has more vibe and is more one-on-one than most. Sometimes the voice sounds not-real to me, but generally I think he's pretty good for Portland. He and Vicky also seem to work well together.

The question is, just how much ARB share will KOOL take? Should be interesting.

Listening to Hood's morning show the last couple of weeks, and while Dave himself may be live, is his sidekick Vickie Martinez (sp?) voice-tracked? It seems like whenever she pops up in a segment, it's always just an abrupt topic change or she just immediately starts talking about something without prompting. Having never listened for signs of voicetracking before, I might be way off base, but is this what's happening?
