KGW reported tonight that KPAM morning man Bob Miller is in the hospital -- he was in an accident while riding his scooter near his home. According to the report, he should be out of the hospital Thursday and back to work early next year.

Bob once you heal up you gotta believe there's a parody song in this story somewhere.

Be good to yourself. Also consider a helmet for walking too.

Funny thing...I can easily visualize Bob Miller on a scooter! Big oversized helmet, goofy looking goggles...and hopefully, from now on really thick leathers! :-)

Might want to consider a helmet for the studio, too...those RE-20s can leave a nasty bump! :-)

Get Well, Bob!

Not the way one likes to attract attention. Sounds like it would even hurt to laugh, and we know laughter is the best medicine.

I'm relieved to know you're OK...Get well, follow directions, and may God bless...

Qpatrickedwards-

I was thinking a helmet for Bob during broadcasts as well. It could be designed just like the kind the drivers use for NASCAR, complete with sponsor decals.

Bob could promote his helmet cam as well as an in studio web cam to show product placement throughout the studio while getting close ups on those decals on Bob's helmet.

Bob that scrape on your arm looks real nasty. I'm sure the doctors are advising you to keep that thing clean. When I did a crash and burn last year at the Alpine slide I had some nasty cuts on my arm and it got infected with that flesh eating bacteria. (Probably shouldn't have brought that up)

Be healed brother Bob!!!

Sorry to hear about the mishap, Bob. After leaving radio full time I became a RiderCoach/Instructor/Trainer and would be happy to introduce you to some ways to manage your risks while riding instead of simply giving up and selling your scooter. Remember all the reasons you got it in the first place? Fun, economy, freedom and the feeling of independence! Please continue to share the value of a good helmet! Speedy recovery, Bob!!

Bob... I hope your recovery is swift. I'm sure you'll be fine, just make sure to have the wife empty the drool cup every few days.

As a guy who rode motorcycles every day for a decade I can tell you how heartbreaking it is to have an accident. All I did was dump the Virago on a gravel road on Mount Rainier, but my ego was eternally bruised... so bruised I reassessed my yearning for the open road and sold it.

Bob, we all look forward to getting you back on the road, and back behind the RCA 77 DX as soon as Dr. Pamplin emerges from vespers.

Hey Trixter....Your occasional posts of "Is (station name) still broadcasting?" is part of your bit, and that's fine.

However, this thread is about a person that appears to have suffered some pretty serious injuries.

Have a little class.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery Bob.

This from yesterday's All Access:

--------------------KPAM's Miller Back After Accident---------------------
PAMPLIN Talk KPAM-A/PORTLAND mornng host BOB MILLER is back on the air after a month off the air recovering from a scooter accident.

NBC affiliate KGW-TV/PORTLAND reports that MILLER, trying to avoid a car that abruptly stopped in front of him at a traffic light, cracked ribs and punctured his lung in the DECEMBER 17th mishap, along with getting a badly scraped arm and forehead abrasions. MILLER tells KGW-TV that his helmet prevented worse injuries.

This from the KPAM website:

-------------------BOB BROADCASTS FROM HIS HOUSE-------------------

Bob Miller returned to KPAM 860 on Monday, 1/7, three weeks after a motor scooter crash that left him with three broken ribs and a punctured lung. Doctor's orders require Bob to broadcast FROM HIS OWN HOME in Beaverton, at least for some time while he heals. Bob has the option of hosting the show from his rented hospital bed, or from his kitchen table.

Beaverton Mayor Rob Drake joined to proclaim Bob's kitchen table fit for broadcast. KGW TV was there to report on his first day back in the saddle, video here:

Let me take a moment to say thanks to those who have left messages of encouragement both on this board and via email, snail mail, and phone calls. Its been overwhelming. Sometimes it takes a situation like this to remind us how many caring friends we actually have and how much they mean to us. I'm sure Craig, Tom, and others can relate to the fact that spending hours and days laid up truly gives you time to put things into crystal clear perspective. I am truly blessed and much of that blessing includes being surrounded by my wonderful family and friends and understanding that they're not just there in times of need...they're always there.
I'm happy that through current technology I can be back on the air from the house. I really look forward to returning to the studio though.
Thanks again, everyone. Feelin' stronger every day.

Thanks for the update Bob. Glad to hear you're on the mend.

And don't under estimate working from home. Think of all the gas you'll be saving, wear and tear on your vehicle, your own personal bathroom, wearing your PJ's while working (or less depending if you have a web cam).

Bob, if you monitor this board, I haven't lived in PDX for a couple years (returning to the area in late summer 2008 if all goes according to plans) and don't check this board as much as I used to, so I only read about your accident today (2/9/08). I'm glad you came out of it in one piece. I've lived and worked all over the USA and Canada, and Bob is one of the best morning show hosts (not to mention a class act) I've had the pleasure of hearing. Hang in there, and here's wishing you a full recovery!

One of the funniest moments I can remember about Bob Miller on KEX. I was out of radio during that time , just a listener then.

KEX did a contest for , I believe it was the Spring book 1980. It was all about finding the wooden KEX key to win 1,190 dollars. That thing was HUGE people all over trouping about Portland and eventually most of them up in Forest Park, OMSI and the environs up around Sylvan and the Zoo hunting for the KEX key. I walked right by the thing myself at least a dozen times, playing hookie on long lunch hours looking for the prize like all the other scizzorbills. This thing got somewhat out of hand from what I could see and heard and read about later, but eventually there was a winner, but it took weeks to find it.

The last day of this 'promotion'...I was listening to Bob and someone else, Art Howe, maybe Bob Swanson ? ( dont remember exactly now) talking on the air about the latest clues and really making it easier I thought for people to get their act together and end it all fast. Bob saying at the very last part of the break ... PLEASE FIND IT !!!!!!!!!!!!

Someone did the next day as I remember.

Because I had been in radio I knew the tone of his voice and the implications of the contest..I was driving across the Ross Island Bridge at the time and there was so many tears of laughter in my eyes I thought I might run into oncomming traffic.

Jbm...I am humbled by and appreciate your comments very much. Thank you.
Kenniwickman..."turn about is fair play". You've made me laugh out loud and now here is the rest of the story: I was PD of KEX at the time and I wrote the clues for finding that stupid thing. Apparently I wrote them too well. Nobody could find it. The GM was breathing down my neck daily wanting to know why nobody could find it. In addition to that, some clown had called the station claiming that he had found it but wasn't going to turn it in for months! What you heard in my voice on the air was PANIC!! The next clue I wrote all but told you where it was. I mean my DOG could have figured out the location based upon that clue. It took about 30 minutes from the first airing of that clue for someone to bring it in to the station.
Believe it or not, I had PDs from all over the country calling me asking how to write clues for a contest like that.
Again...thanks for the memory and the laugh.

miller

Oh..it was Jim Howe you heard. My good friend, golfing buddy, and retired news director of KEX.

I will tell you why nobody could find it since I was one of the throngs of zombies that was looking for it. I saw a pic of the wooden 'key' in the paper afterwards. Bob did a real good job of hiding that thing in a patch of saplings planted behind that interpretive exhibit building up there between the old OMSI and the Zoo. Anyhow, the color of that piece of wood was blonde ( it was pine I think ) and the sapling starter trees (about 3 or 4 ft tall ) were some tree that had light bark and leaves. The blonde coloring matched the forest of saplings exactly, it was like looking into a duck blind !

Good job Bob !

That is a great story guys.
We did something similar in the 80's in Roseburg.
It involved the Pepsi bottler.
We hid a Pepsi bottle. The Sales Manager and I drove way the heck into the middle of no where up on logging roads, back down again, looking everywhere for just the right place to hide it and writing clues all the way.
We were giving away $500.
So not 5 days in, with the clues of course being very vague so that we can stretch this thing out as long as possible, this homeless guy shows up at the station.
We had put a note in the bottle along the lines of "return to KQEN for $500, you are the Winner" etc.
He wanted his money. He wasn't a listener, he just stumbled on the bottle!
Unbelievable!
So, luckily for us, the bottler was into trying it again, and we quietly gave the guy his money and continued the contest this time we drove frigging 100 miles up into the mountains!
That was a great promotion and generated a ton of listeners and sponsors.
That is the kind of stuff no one does anymore!

Thats quite a story Dodger ! What a gas that mustah been..nice thing about those is all the fresh air you get planting the prizes huh????

And the reason why they dont do these kinds of contests, a take of on a board game like Clue or radio Scavanger Hunt is because of the nasty word "Lawsuits'. Stations were first getting sued over contesting that involved driving someplace specific to get a prize, people getting into car wrecks and other mishaps etc ( back in the 60s, most of that). So they changed their behaviors and contested with variations on what KEX and KQEN did but some stations even got into trouble over this version in court aka the Amercian preoccupation with litigation of everything under God's creation. I am not responsible , they are ! You know...

So then we went to games like " Where in the world is it" type contesting...( Seems to me KGW did this ) One station I worked for in Medford did it as well. That is where you give clues about a place or landmark, it could be local or National or International in nature. These kinds of contests are safe because it doesnt require any driving or transportation to really find an object, you just listen and if you drive it isnt for getting there first, so you dont get sued !

I was involved in a take off on this in the Tri Cities @ 960/KALE in 1991 where we did weekly clues for weekly cash prizes involving a number of targets , local landmarks, Star Trek trivia, and a host of other subjects and we targeted our demos closely, we were 60s centered Oldies at that time. We gave away $96/week through most of the book and the last week , was the biggy for 960 dollars. And it was sponsored by various clients, and it worked out pretty well for us. And it was a mind twister writing the weekly clues. I got to do 2 or 3 weeks of clue writing at least , and I was only a partimer/studio engineer...It was a lot fun for me and I remembered that KEX contest clearly when I wrote the daily/weekly clues and getting them approved by the PD, something new and different for me to do but it was a very labor intensive contest, so we didnt do it the next year. I was a little disappointed...
