My wife can't stand his music, but he was a key part of my musical adolescence, and many of his songs (along with the memories from my life they recall) touch my heart deeply. He wasn't on this earth nearly long enough, but he filled his time well.

Dan was one of the staples I played on my campus radio station and a few of the soft rock stations I worked professionally.

During my college days on many a Friday or Saturday night during the winter months in Spokane, us acoustic guitar players would pull out our axes and no doubt would play some Fogelberg. We counted it as group therapy.

A gifted songwriter and singer and a perfectionist as a producer. His music lives on and Heaven adds yet another angelic voice to it's choir.

I too was a big fan while going through my teen angst (for about 23 years), I hadn't thought of him in years, I may need to pull out one of his albums, maybe "Twin Sons of Different Mothers", I always loved that title.

But I have to laugh while visualizing "axe" and "DF" in the same sentence: Rock on, brother! Turn it up to "11"!

This New Years Eve is going to be sad knowing when I play Dan Fogelberg's "Same Old Lang Syne" he's no longer with us. It seems like only yesterday when the song was a climbing up the chart as a current hit. Here's more on his life:

RIP....When I heard the news of his death, I was a bit shocked to hear that he died so "young." My parents are both older than poor Dan! :-(

I live in a market where they play Fogelberg's "Same Old Lang Syne" as a Christmas song. They play it a LOT.

What do you think ... Christmas song, or not?

Never heard of that connection.

Longer, Leader of the Band, and Same Old Lang Syne would be my favorites!

At first glance, I confused John Fogerty with Dan Fogelberg. I'm glad that the old man down the road is still around.

Fogelberg had many songs that didn't make it to radio. "To The Morning", "There's a Place in the World for a Gambler" , "Wondering Stranger."

The guy didn't need to belt out a song with searing vocals. He crafted a song and told a story. It was relatable on an emotional level which makes losing him so hard.

I was never much of a fan, but I always liked the instrumental "Tullamore Dew"

While Fogelberg is best known for soft ballads, he has done some decent up-tempo rockers as well. The title cut from "Phoenix" (which "Tullamore Dew" leads into), a song against nuclear power called "Face the Fire," and his 1984 hit "Language of Love" all come to mind.

Bummer.

I listened to his music a lot in the late 70's and early 80's. I'd kind of forgotten about him, would hear one of his tunes once in a while (usually "Leader of the Band"), which is one of my favorites.

Then when I got my Sirius radio I found that they played his music quite a bit and I sort of got back into his stuff.

He'll be missed. Guess I'll have to go by more of his music!

Yeah, 56 is WAY too young.

In the past, I've heard "Same Old Lang Syne" played with Christmas in Portland. Kisn-FM under PD Bill Minckler programmed the song in Christmas music and might have done it also at K103.

I've always considered it Borderline Christmas with "My Favorite Things", "Scarlet Ribbons", "The Marvelous Toy", "Pretty Paper" & "Shake Me, I Rattle".

I would consider "Same Old Lang Sign" a rather wistfull Christmas song even though it's more in the same realm of Harry Chapin's "Taxi".

It's a sweet and sad song, however I can guarantee that Mr M. would not be very happy if I ran to the store on a snowy Christmas Eve and ended up being gone for an hour or more because I was sharing a six-pack and a kiss with an ex-"lover" in my car because no bars were open. He'd probably even take back my Chia Pet.

Ahh...but if Mr. M doesn't know about it...Mr. M can't be unhappy about it! :-)

There's a famous saying that could be applied in this situation: "What happens in Chevy Vegas, Stays in Chevy Vegas!"

About Fogelberg: 56 is WAY too young to die. Another reason that, uncomfortable as it is, we as middle aged/older guys need to get our prostates checked regularly.

You know, if the Doc would just buy me dinner first, or maybe give me flowers, I'd be more inclined to get checked. :-)

My beer just came out my nose from laughing!

Mr. M wouldn't care about the windows being fogged up, just pissed that he had to entertain both of our entire families for 2 hours while I supposedly just went out for some more Brussels Sprouts, gravy in a jar and Midol.

And believe me, it's no fun to drink beer on a cold winter night in a Vega!

Vegas? Yes. Vega? No.

Besides, if you leave the heat on too long, it will probably crack that famous aluminum (tin foil) engine block (AGAIN!)

Dan Fogelberg's early death spurred me to make an appointment for a physical that I should have had 12 months ago. Might I suggest you do the same?

On the upside, it only takes 2 hours to do an engine swap in a Vega! I only had to do it 3 times. (In a 4 year old car!!!!)
