If you head over to the Oregon Media Insiders website www. oregonmediainsiders. com -- you find a wonderful discussion of the ways local radio helped out those ravaged by the storm last week.

I know we here at Portland Radio are too busy talking about Imus, TV Christmas tree stories, and a SF talk show host to discuss live and local radio matters.....

Great point!

Whatever happened to "live and local" message boards, anyway?

I enjoyed listening to Bill Gallagher on KXL in the mid 90's during the afternoon hours. Especially on Friday when he would host Terribly Terrific Trivia. I even called in once and won.

KPAM called themselves "live and local" when they first hit the airwaves. I think they should change their statement to "live and local but only during certain hours."

and Oregon Media Insiders is a great blog site to participate in. They also plug this site from time to time as well...

This one is much more active, but that one seems to attract a higher proportion of people in the industry.

"but that one seems to attract a higher proportion of people in the industry."

Hmmm. Wonder why that would be.

I don't know, clue us in. A backhanded way of saying, no one with any interest in, knowledge of or concern for, radio would bother sharing anything of value here? Guess when you post here as opposed to the other site you are just slumming.

Some of the discussion on the Portland Media Insiders board left me a bit disappointed. As one participant on that board stated, many of the comments on that board appear to come from disgruntled commercial radio employees who daydream of working at OPB.

By "industry", I mean Oregon media generally, not just radio. Judging from the posts, pdxradio has a broader mix of fans and nonfans, students, early-career insiders, radio escapees, a coupla trolls, and some established pros. Virtually all of the participants here are opinionated, and very many are knowledgeable.

The other site has an interesting ongoing discussion over the extent to which Portland media dropped the ball on the recent storm. The Daily Astorian, which apparently has a bug up, claimed in an editorial that people in Portland were surprised, two days after the fact, to hear that there had been a storm, and that The Oregonian ignored it until Wednesday. Total crock, as people from radio, TV, and newspapers, over on the other site, are pointing out.

By the way a standout job on the storm coverage was done by KAST's Michael Desmond, former KEX guy, who apparently jerry-rigged a generator and mixer and was a one-man beacon in the night. Good man.

I can't really get into the other site. There's quite a bit about TV and other media but radio seems to take a back seat and when the subject DOES come up, I haven't been able to get much out of it. It' hard to remember to check out the site and when I do, it just isn't of that much interest to me.

OMI covers newspaper and the non-engineering side of TV fairly well, while more of the technical discussions and radio formatting issues are here.

OMI is fine as another outlet and voice. But I find this community is vibrant! And it's thanks to Dan Packard and everyone who chooses to contribute...
