When I was a kid, I heard through my brother, who was briefly in the radio biz, a blooper/gag reel that had a spot on it where Bill Schonley and Jack Ramsay were swearing and joking before a 1978 Blazer playoff game vs. Seattle. If anyone has any knowledge of such a tape, I would love to know about it.

I might be able to at least learn about since Schonz is due to be in my studio today.

(skip reading this if you don't like foul language)

Yeah, it was before Game 2 of the 1978 series vs. Seattle. I believe it never aired, but I could be mistaken. Paraphrasing, it went like this:

Bill: So, Jack, let's talk about Game 1 (which the Blazers lost).

Jack: Well, Bill, I don't give a shit about that.

Bill: (laughing) I knew you were going to do that! I was going to do that too! Son of a Bitch!

If he remembers that, that would be awesome.

That was from the Jack Ramsay Show, a pre-recorded (on site) show that aired prior to the Pre Game show before all home Blazer games. Can't remember for sure if the Coach's Show aired before road games or not, but I know they aired before every home game. On this particular game, Dave Bell fed the outtake down the phone line back to the station before we went to air so we could record it. I can't remember if I was working that game or not, but I well remember the outtake! It's a classic...

I didn't get a chance to ask Schonz during our recording session today since the marketing director from my clients company was also present during the session. Maybe another time.

Had to keep things on the professional side this afternoon.

Great thread Chris, Chris and Scott. I am very curious about this gem. I do hope it comes to light. Bill Schonely is one of the all-time greats of sportscasting.

In the meantime, this site focuses on the Seattle Pilots broadcast crew and has a rare clip:

http://www.seattlepilots.com/radio.html

As sports tirades go, here is a classic bit of blue material from Earl Weaver and the Baltimore Orioles radio network. Be warned, although this first version has been edited from the even more lengthy and ribald original, it has rough language:

http://108mag.typepad.com/the_southpaw/2007/01/earl_weavers_ma.html

This page contains the Weaver bit as well as outtakes from Howard Cosell, the infamous speech from Lee Elia, a blunt response from Don Zimmer, and other classic gems:

I do remember one game years ago when Schonz said something along the lines of "let's see what Jack has to say about that call --"

A loud and resounding, "That was bullsh..." came over the radio.

It was quickly followed by Bill without missing a beat, "Wellll, I guess we know how he feels. Sorry folks..."

Can we use this occasion to open an old wound?
Why in the world did the Blazers hire that horrid announcer Wheeler to replace the greatest basketball announcer ever?
Shonz is still bitter and yet still loyal.
I have golfed many rounds with the shonz and he is kind, considerate but still pissed.
If Chick Hearn could be left on the laker network right up until death, why not shonz?
Yes he has slowed down, but so did Harry Carey and he was still the reason you listened. Isn't that good radio?
Wheeler is horrible and gets bigger every year (and I don't mean bigger in popularity)

I think Schonz is probably more disappointed than actually pissed. Sure he was hurt but I don't think he hangs on to that kind of thing.

But give Schonz some more credit for taking the high road. He never used the media to hang the dirty laundry. He's confided a few things to me over the years but nothing earth shattering.

Class act, total professional and you're right Dodger just a nice guy. Most of our conversations are about the voice work we do for one of our clients and then personal stuff. We rarely talk sports or the Blazers and we do have a good laugh from time to time.

We talk a lot when we golf and probably 85% is about Blazers and other sports we have done over the years, and I can tell you this Chris, on the golf course is different than a studio.
He is pissed still.
I have seen his tee shots when we talk Blazers.
LOL!

So basically you keep him talking about the Blazers so you can beat him at golf? Pretty sneaky.

My hats off to Steve Patterson who got him back in the fold with the Blazers.

Hey Scott, is there any way that you can make a .wav or .mp3 of that clip?

The account of the exchange between Jack and Bill given by Chrispdx is pretty accurate...may only be off by one word! The important thing to note here is that Jack was just having fun with Schonz and knew it wouldn't go over the air. Guess he didn't think about us keeping it for a party tape.
Littlesongs account of the "let's see what the coach thinks about that", may or may not have been with Jack Ramsay, but is accurate and certainly goes a long way to explain why we don't mic the coaches any more!

Steve Naganuma found his digital copy before I found mine and he sent it to me. Thanks Steve! I posted it here:

For some reason it's playing back in fast forward. Wonder if that's a browser issue?

Well maybe I'll download it into Pro Tools and slow it down. Then accidently play it next time Schonz is over to record.

Hey Chris, next time you see Bill tell him I said hello. It's been a lotta years but he may still remember the wet-behind-the-ears kid who ran the board for the Blazer network at KOIN/KYTE.

It played fast for me too in both Firefox and IE, but played normally when downloaded and played in WinAmp.

It played fast for me also, sounds like Alvin, Simon, and Theodore of the Chipmunks.

Davebell, I really admire your work. I wanted to clarify that the "it" was deftly lopped off by unseen expert hands. Pretty speedy -- as I imagine those were the days without delays. You may be right on my recollection of coaches.

Thanks Steve -- and Scott -- for the hilarious clip. This is truly priceless stuff from the Doc and Schonz!
