This from R&R: ----------------Longtime KOMO Morning Host Fights Cancer--------------- By Mike Stern Former Fisher Broadcasting talk KOMO/Seattle radio morning host Larry Nelson has been diagnosed with stage four lung cancer, which is terminal and inoperable. Nelson hosted the morning show on KOMO for nearly 30 years. He also anchored on-air Husky tailgate parties before University of Washington football games. An update on his Web site, Larrybnelson.com, describes the cancer as “non-small cell.” It has “gone outside the box following the spine and bone.” Nelson is currently waiting to find out if he is a candidate for chemotherapy. Friends, listeners and colleagues are posting their wishes and memories on the Web site. To add your thoughts go to Larrybnelson.com. http://www.larrybnelson.com/

when I worked at KJR I had to monitor KOMO to see what news we didn't report. They had an 8 person news staff plus TV reporters too. At the big 95 we had me and Bill Rice and we were supposed to beat them. Yeah, right! I usually listened to Larry every day. He was the friendliest voice I have ever heard. HE was also very funny. Larry is one major talent!

Larry died early this morning. When I arrived at KOL in 4/67, we had an airborne traffic reporter. By 68, KOL had dropped the expense and "monitored" KOMO's 2-way chatter often scooping situations before they even got them on the air. One day Larry and the guy in the plane were chattering about an overturned truck on the Evergreen floating bridge, which had dumped a load of oil drums...causing massive tie-ups. Naturally, KOL jumped right on it. Unfortunately, it was a conspiracy to "burn" all the other stations that monitored KOMO. It was untrue. The Seattle paper reported the KOMO guys prank, thankfully not naming us victims. The backlash: a slap on the wrist by the FCC for KOMO. You see, it is not legal to broadcast "false emergency" information via 2-way...it's kind of akin to sending an "SOS" when no emergency exists. Just a glimpse into the creative mind of Larry Nelson, a consummate promo and on-air communicator.

Larry Nelson has passed away. A great broadcaster, the likes of which you don't see anymore.

Where does his son work? I remember hearing Larry on KUIK around 1980....one of the voices of an automated reel to reel AC format....

Great tribute to a good guy, as I was listening live online last night... I had the chance to have lunch with Larry as KOMO PD, along with Don Cannon (who was KOMO's music director at the time, I think) while I was working at KYXI in the beautiful music days. Larry knew his stuff, and was as down-to-earth as everyone else has said. His demeanor and body of work, on the air as well as off, is a model to follow even today.
