Ed Hepp was so cool sounding on the air that I always thought it was an air name. He was, indeed, "hep". Great air talent.

I thought old DJs didn't die, they just went to jazz stations.

I worked with Ed when he did a stint at KGON. He was introverted and did not connect with many people. For whatever reason, he and I had a friendship. He would make a point to stop and see me whenever he was in the building when I was. I also wold stop in to chat while he did his "ever so smooth" delivery on KGON. He wold give me pointers on how to better relate to the audience. I thought about Ed about 2-weeks ago; wondering what ever happened to him. Now, I know.

Ed Hepp began his broadcasting career as Ed Mitchell and did afternoon drive at Top 40 KRUX 1360 Glendale/Phoenix in 1965. Ed moved San Francisco in 1966, working 9-Noon at The Big 610 KFRC. In 1967 he moved across town to Free Form KMPX 106.9, changing his air name to his real name Ed Hepp.

Then in 1968 yet another move to the legendary KSAN 94.9. Next it was off to KPPC 1240/106.7 Pasadena where Ed pulled the 11am to 4pm shift. In 1969 Ed became Program Director at KMYR 95.5 Denver. Then back to his home town in 1972 as Music Director at the new KQIV 106.7 Lake Oswego/Portland where he was heard 10am to 2pm. In 1974 Ed moved to KGON 92.3 Portland, midnight to 6.

I know I must be missing stations, if anyone can add to this list I would appreciate it. Here's a picture of Ed in 1966 at KFRC:
