There are only a handful left of the 10000+ P-38's left.

A significant find.

During those decades, beach strollers, sunbathers and swimmers were often within a few yards of the aircraft, utterly unaware of its existence just under the sand. Only this past summer did it suddenly reappear due to unusual conditions that caused the sands to shift and erode.

Wow, literally right under their feet all these years.

Not to detour from the topic, but this disturbs me: unusual conditions that caused the sands to shift and erode. Global warming?

Hmm . . . I wonder how many other aircraft we'll find as a result of global warming -- Numerous military aircraft crashed in Greenland and now buried under ice. Dozens of C-47s (aka DC-3's) on the the Himalayas. There's at least one Connie and a DC-10 under the ice in Antarctica (although neither were military, and in case of the DC-10, in millions of pieces.)
