CBS Radio rock KUFO/Portland has named Chris Patyk as its new PD. He replaces Mike Tierney, who left in late August to become APD/MD at sister rock WXRK (K-Rock)/New York. Patyk’s appointment becomes effective Nov. 27.

“Chris has the depth of experience, the vision and the right temperament to take KUFO to new heights,” said KUFO senior VP/GM Dave McDonald. “He’s worked with some of the best personalities in the business and I know that history will serve him well in this new position. He will undoubtedly be a great addition to the CBS Radio Portland staff.”

“It’s exciting to join the team at KUFO,” said Patyk. “This is a radio station with real heritage and a talented staff, on-air and off. Portland is an incredible city and I’m looking forward to working with everyone there and, once again, being part of the CBS Radio family.”

Patyk’s last tour of duty with CBS was as PD at talk KZON (Free FM)/Phoenix, prior to them flipping to rhythmic in June. His career began in 1993 in Tucson where he produced the morning show hosted by Mike Elliott and Jimmy Kimmel at KRQ. Later he went on to produce morning shows at KJYK and KMXZ. In the summer of 1995 he became PD for alternative KKND-AM, and in 1996, he hosted the evening show and took on the APD/MD position at KEDJ/Phoenix. Patyk moved to Los Angeles in 1999 as APD/MD of KYSR, working with Danny Bonaduce and Ryan Seacrest.

[note: That's a lot of sunshine. He might want to take a picture, since he may not see it here until after the '08RoseFestival!]

2 years from start of career to PD of an AM station. Then much dues paying as DJ/APD/MD!

But still a fine resume.

Taking KUFO to "new heights" implies that the station (and format) has not yet peaked. That's a tall, tall order.

So does anyone else see the current airstaff jockeying to keep there current positions? is Portland ready for a male intensive FM talk format? If this is indeed the case who is the only one on the current airstaff set to keep his/her job?

This is of course only an assumption/prediction/ guess on my part based on Patyk’s above stated experience. Ie a complete overhaul of KUFO's HD1 signal with the intended KUFO HD2 signal being tweaked very little.

Who stays? Who goes? What if any changes will be made now that Patyk has arrived in PDX?

Anyone care to speculate?

Btw I stopped listening to KUFO out of frustration of there much needed improvement of there playlist.

I love rock formats but theirs blows...

So far, there isn't any HD signal at all as we still await the new antenna.

Since most male intensive FM talk stations have now switched back to a music format due to lack of success, its hard to believe anyone's ready to jump back into that (drained) pool.

KUFO almost IS a Male FM talk station... every time I listen online, it's either Marconi yakking about something or Cort & Fatboy running their mouths.

My advice to Patyk: Shut up and rock!
No format flip... that would leave PDX almost completely without any rock. At least anything halfway current. I'm barely counting NRK as "rock".

Marconi sucks. Get rid of all the jabbering idiot DJ's and just play good, hard rock. KUFO is a shell of what it used to be back when Al Scott and company were on.

No way FM Talk is ever comin back anywhere, and Portland was wise or lucky to have missed out on those flips. KUFO should have a LOCAL morning show all talk, and strong personalities that rock all day. Those of you that want a jukebox can get an I-pod.

I 2nd that! But as far as the FM talk thing goes, I don't know that FM talk can't work. I just think that FM talk that tries to serve the active rock demo can't work. For instance, if KXL moved to an AM signal, I think there would be no problem. In other words, it's not the "FM" that's the problem, its the active rock without the rock that's the problem!

I don't think the marconi show is a very "strong" personality in the afternoon. I think an FM talk would work really well 0n 101.
The music has gotten so bad, its turning all of their listeners off.
The only guy I enjoy listening to on KUFO is Bozyk. He is informative and and talks about the bands, and he doesn't try to be funny! The rest of the airstaff I could care less about!

Obviously not. It has been an AM signal for over 80 years.

You and I might care about that sort of thing, but most listeners probably don't- as long as they can find it on the dial.

KUFO is garbage. Way too much talk. Friday I had to listen to Marconi complain about not enough space on a hard drive to save all the FREAKING talk!

Heres an idea, your a rock station, Play some freakin rock. How in the hell can it be the only station that really rocks when I here more talk then music?

Bozyk is great though, thats the only time I can listen to that station.

It's virtually impossible to get anyone under about 50 to listen to AM for anything anymore. If you put the same thing on FM, at least you have a chance of reaching some saleable demographics.

I know. In my personal opinion as a listener, it's a shame that the station that once touted "more continuous rock, no useless talk," now has a great deal of talk. The only thing that would be any worse would be a station that runs a combination of rock music and AM-radio-style talk. Imagine AC-DC, GNR, Sublime (most of which wasn't even that good anyway), and Linkin Park, mixed in with Lars and Hannity ...
I guess I'll call the FUFO li- oh wait, that doesn't exist anymore, either. :-) That guy now works there.
Which puts me on another tangent... Marconi always used to run calls where people were complaining that they were tuned into the station to hear music, and were tired of putting up with talking. His response was along the lines of '...turn on the River, turn on K-Lite...,' but the reality was they wanted to hear the music that the station he was on was advertised as playing, and KUFO at the time wasn't either, as they had Dogface on at the time. If listeners wanted to hear music on the River or K-Lite in the first place, they would be listening to them anyway, they wouldn't have bothered to call.
Once again, IMO this is how I think this "lifestyle radio" thing doesn't work... using the current album/active/modern rock radio example, you get superserved if you spend all your discretionary income (and then some) on cigarettes, alcohol, pornography, strip clubs and illegal drugs. If you don't, then according to that station's "lifestyle" you don't exist and your listenership is therefore irrelevant. The only other option is the 'museum'-presentation style, which comes across as boring to a lot of people (myself included).
Again IMO, as a result of the 'if you don't like it, turn the radio off' campaign, people have gladly done so, and replaced their radio listening with online sources, downloading, and digital music players. DT was happy to show off his Zune at the last get-together, and others I know are more than happy to talk about what they have on their music players. Imagine if all this discussion about digital music players was replaced with discussions about the radio station someone listened to last night, the new song they heard for the first time last night, who the DJ was that played it, the calls from other listeners who liked the song or not, etc.
But we don't have this, we have on-air talk about how the DJ liked the strip club act that was going over the weekend while the music was playing in the background. The only people talking about that are the people who are listening with a notepad and a tape rolling, with the FCC complaint number on speed dial. Again, IMO, I really wish music formats were the foreground for discussion, not the background.

Bozyk IS the man... and a class act. Great dj.
Agreed.

Bozyk Rocks! Best dj on Kufo. The rock reports, AWESOME!
Bozyk is right up there with Al Scott, and all the other great legends that are no longer on KUFO. The thing I love about Bozyk is that his talk breaks are so damn interesting. He doesn't sound scripted, or like he is reading off a paper. He is conversationsal and sounds like the type of guy you would love to have a beer with at the local Pub!
Much love for Bozyk.

The only complaint I have against Bozyk is when he plays that damn Steelers fight song, other then that he is great.

Just fire all those other ass clowns on that station and replay Bozyk's show all (cept Adam C, I love that show)

It started when Dave Numme identified the trend of music being available via iPod and internet, etc. He started the sation in a lifestyle-based rock/infotainment direction because he knew KUFO couldn't compete and win the same way long-term without some sort of entertainment angle in addition to the music that would get the demo to put down the iPods and listen to KUFO. I agreed with his assesment and decision initially, but it's gone way to far in that direction since he left the station.

Bozyk is by far one of the best rock jocks in portland, if not the country for many reasons. Beano hit the nail on the head about his talk breaks. He sounds conversational and always has a great piece of info on the bands and doesn't try to be funny!
NRK on the other hand, sound scripted like they are reading off a paper on EVERY TALK BREAK! Bozyk RULES!!!!!!!! KUFO may be a sinking ship, but Bozyk is the glue that is holding that station together. If it wasn't for Bozyk, KUFO would be off my presets!
