Yes, I have done it. I have started a thread for the assembled army of maple tree hugging science fiction loving citizens of the future. Since the summer show led to a tremendous outpouring of love, I bet we get 2112 posts!

When I was a student at KBPS, I remember Red Barchetta was always a good choice in the rack of carts. So, for old times sake, I'll shove it in the slot and give the green button a push:

No politics and no bickering. This little oasis of sanity will be about the music of our friends to the north. :0)

Well then we will just take the thread and go "The Way The Wind Blows". Hopefully we will not wind up in "The Twilight Zone".

46 more shows through the summer of 2008 for the Snakes and Arrows tour......Road Trip!!

I can't wait for the Snake's and Arrow's tour DVD to come out. Got a spot for it right next to "Rush in RIO".

I love their very aggressive use of form and texture.

Posted a while back on that, related to the song "Superconductor". At least four, stand out forms present and accounted for, plus a bridge and it all just works!

Texture, with these guys, runs from the lyrics all the way down to the core musical tools they employ.

One good example of this is the beginning lyric of "The Trees".

-------

The trouble with the maples
(and theyre quite convinced they're right)
They say the oaks are just too lofty
And they grab up all the light

-------

Parenthetical lyrics are difficult to employ, due to their tendency to disrupt the song cadence. Extra measures and extensions to a moving theme are nearly always required. Here, it just happens, flows and only adds to the story.

They are at their best when form is used to highlight core ideas. Most of their music has layers in meaning, just as it does, theme. RUSH will often vary from complex to simple and beautiful, multiple times no less, in a single tune, while carrying a story.

RUSH was also one of the first to introduce (to me) the idea that complex and abstract ideas could be conveyed in the emotional language of music. "Time Stands Still" is likely one of my favorite tunes for this reason.

The idea that we are just behind the moment is not an easy one to talk about. Many adults live their whole lives not realizing this important reality. Hear a sound? It's already passed, as it takes time for our mind to translate it into meaning and actually weave it into experience.

That's heady stuff!

But it gets better!

Holding on to a moment, maybe just living it slowly, ties into this with powerful emotion. An excellent coupling of science and emotion into a theme that can resonate with the common man.

(if you don't just grok this song, there is no hope --stick with the pop tunes)

**could go on for pages**

Next!!

I used to smoke a LOT of ot. The second concert I ever went to was Rush at Memorial Colosseum for the Signals tour.

I was transfixed by some dude air-drumming ( WELL, I might add ) in the 300 level.

I still laugh about it with the friends who were there.

I lived in Toronto in 1984 and was cruising Yonge Street with my friend Dana, a YYZ native. We had been drinking B-52's and Old Vienna at this little bar, listening to a local band (bars with LIVE music woo hoo!) and were about to leave when the bartender said, "Wait...you gotta stay for one more set." We did. The local guys came back, did one song, and were replaced by their buddies, RUSH! Rush rushed the stage in a bar the size of the Candlelight! Dana reminds me that it was the same night she bumped into a light pole and said "Excuse me!" as we were walking(?) to the streetcar, TTC, which is Canadian for Take The Car.

Ahhh Littlesongs, you're quite the giver. A thread devoted to Canada's greatest export, I thank you.

Has anyone read any of Neil's literature? Ghost Rider was an incredible read ... and it really speaks volumes of a person to open themselves up during such a dark time of their life and share. All too many musicians are pompous and holier-than-thou, not only are these guys better than the rest of them (I've been to my fair share of concerts, different ages, different genres, different types of music and **NOBODY** just rocks it like these three old guys!), but they are down-to-earth too. They seem like guys that us everyday folk can relate to.

I became a Rush fan when I saw the video for Tom Sawyer on MTV probably back in 1982 or so when i was a mere 10 years old. Moving Pictures was my first Rush album, and to this day, remains my favorite.

Littlesongs: ever been in a Fantasy Baseball league with Geddy?

Brianl: Sorry you can't make the event...I have a budget that I will most certainly disregard in the heat of the moment, and if I win, will gladly share with the class when opportunity presents.

Missing: I love that you listen with your mind on the technical and your heart in the mood. Grok.

DT: Was that you that just got "Distant Early Warning" into Connect the Classics?

Vitalogy: I was a senior in HS and that cassette was playing in the '69 Chevelle SS forever! "Witch Hunt" is still my fave from that one and it was great to hear it live again this summer.

CJ: one of the few experiences that is as good with "ot" as without :-)

In the 8th grade, I was in a PE biking class that was dedicated to nothing but biking. The crowning trip for the quarter was a bike ride from our Jr High in Beaverton to Hagg Lake and back, which was about 70 mile round trip. Believe it or not, the teachers actually allowed some of us to bring a walkman and listen to them while biking! I'm willing to bet my next bonus that this certainly wouldn't be allowed now. Although we were wearing helmets. Anyway, the tape I brought was Moving Pictures by Rush, and it played over and over and over again. Everytime I listen to that album, that specific bike ride vividly comes back to me. I especially like the song Camera Eye when they start jamming about 90 seconds into it. And I've always thought Vital Signs was underrated. Everybody got to elevate from the norm...

I was one of the requester's for both "Distant Early Warning" and "Wind of Change" from the Scorp's.

Edit Add: I also rocked out with that cassette in High School in my 1969 Mustang Fastback. 1969 was a very good year for American Muscle Cars.

No doubt!

I like this scope of discussion a lot.

Re: Listen technical + mood:

For me, there is no other way. I'm a bit reluctant to write this, but I'm gonna. For me, every sound has a motion and an image. Has always been that way, since childhood. (I do find myself losing some of that when adult life gets too ugly however... not a good thing!)

A song being in key, for example, is like seeing sets of complementary colors. When the key changes, picture those colors moving around the color wheel, shapes and form remaining the same.

So, little stuff, like a bass drum being tuned *in key* are huge! When vocals, instruments, form and composition all align, it hits me on a lot of levels. Almost always gets me to thinking, dreaming and feeling.

This does not "turn off". Playing the wrong kind of music, for the mood of the time, or task, or just music that is wrong, in terms of form, color, texture, etc... is similar to that ugly feeling we get when hearing nails on the chalk board, or handling paper with gritty hands.

The only analogy I have is when I first realized I could no longer look at a word without actually reading it. Prior to that time, words were things one could look at, or read. Now it's just one and the same. Music is like that.

...no drugs required, though they mostly just add to the experience --particularly a little pot. Sorry all, I've no hangups over that kind of stuff. Humans have toyed with their minds in this way always. They will continue to and for the most part it's all good. Sure, abuse is an issue, but isn't that really true for most things that have some potential to impact us?

Everybody needs to have a light smoke, cookies, tea, whatever makes sense, and just listen through an album. (been a long time for me --maybe it's just time to go camping!)

Enjoying music happens on a lot of levels. For a lot of people, I think learned inhibitions get in the way of this --it's like a barrier between the language (music) and the mind.

Where perhaps we might receive some higher level meaning, it's only part of the emotional story being told. For that to get across, we've got to be somewhat open and primal. It's a lot like the difference between saying something, and just screaming the same idea.

Vit: Moving pictures is just an excellent work. For me, the title is totally spot on too. There are pictures to be "seen" in those works, and they do move. It's one of my favorites also. I know I will always listen to this album.

CJ: That's a great concert story! I'll bet that's one image you never lose! Music played live, in the presence of interested others is a powerful, shared experience. There is nothing else like it! Brings out some interesting parts of ourselves, if we let it.

I sometimes watch what other people are doing in their cars. It's a similar kind of thing where maybe some inhibitions fall by the wayside and people just express what they are feeling. Good --and often hilarious stuff.

Clearly, that guy was just feeling it huge! Good for him. Bet he remembers that concert just as well.

Music and memories are tightly coupled for me also. I can remember where I was, what I was doing --almost everything, for any song that impacted me. It's a lot like smells, which do the same thing, for a lot of people.

I find it also drives moods. When I'm doing something complex, the kind of music --or lack of it, really can have an impact. RUSH is great technical music. I get some of my really great ideas, or good work grooves listening to it.

Little: I've not thought about Loverboy in a while! Did some listening and "Turn Me Loose" brought back an awesome memory! Was in an arcade, playing an old Cinamatronics game "Star Castle". Really was feeling that video game "trance" while that song was playing.

Makes me want to fire up an emulator or two. There is nothing like some great music, of this kind, and those difficult 80's shooters!

Missing_KSKD, you nailed one of the great strengths of Rush: Technical prowess without sterility. As a big fan of jazz, oldies, rhythm & blues, bluegrass, country, folk, lo-fi and underground music, technical compromise is something I have learned to embrace. The soul of a great song cannot be destroyed by limitations, but a souless song cannot be saved by limitless turd polish.

In the context of Rush, I completely agree with you. When a rock act can achieve the same technical and artistic level as a symphony or jazz ensemble, it is something truly special. When it can give me the same chills, it is wonderful. When the same group of artists can continue to be vital for decades, they call them institutions. This humble trio from Canada has rightfully earned that distinction. You said it much better than I did, Doug.

P.S. -- Thanks for reawakening my dim arcade memories. http://www.dosgamesarchive.com/download/game/155 :0)

Wow ... found old footage of Xanadu, live.

As amazing as that work is ... what's MORE amazing is, they recorded it in ONE take. It just ain't right to be dialed in on that technical of a piece ...

One of the absolute beauties of Rush, as mentioned above, is that they are so musically advanced without being boring. It's not the same tempo and two power chords for an entire song (or album, as sadly too much of this genre is) ... it leaves you anticipating more, wanting more, waiting ... much like a good tease in radio.

KSKD and Littlesongs put it much more eloquently than I can even begin to ... all I know is perfection when I see/hear it ... it's like manna from heaven.

I don't know Littlesongs, chills gets to the meat of it.

Ever have your eyes water, feel anger, have the little hairs on the back of your neck stand up, while experiencing a well realized piece of music?

Generally, that's the chills. It's why I listen --hoping it will happen, at times craving it will happen, often NEEDING it to happen.

It's a RUSH thread, but I gotta mention this tune for the emotion / chill factor:

Dream Academy - "Power to Believe". Played at a nice volume, this tune has a serious impact. It's got two things in common with RUSH, even though the style is way different. Theme and form are present and connected with lyrics to form a great story. It's literally a small movie in audio, much like many of my favorite RUSH tunes.

Littlesongs, that's it!

I'm going to Ground Kontrol this weekend and I'm just going to blow 20 bucks, hopefully find I'm still able to realize that arcade trance where thought is motion and nothing else matters, for a while. Actually, on those games, "A while" all comes down to how much you want to stay there!

It's not spending money, but playing a game, being in the game, hitting the trance, then staying right there, balanced --perfect. I suppose this is like meditation of a sorts. Lose focus and *zoom*, the world comes back, you lose a player "life" and it's all just ordinary again...

You bring the 20, hoping just one quarters worth of experience takes you there for a while. You are not done, until it happens, and you hope, walking in the door, 20 is enough!

I love that tune Dark! It's on the pod with many others like it.

Should just call the playlist, "songs to give you pause" because that's exactly what happens when one plays. Almost like going somewhere else for a while. Great stuff.

I'm listening to "New World Man" right now. I like this one because it sparks that feeling of discovery and learning to deal that comes with experiencing the world. I'll listen to this one, then walk around for a while, looking at things differently, wondering what it's really like to be one of those new world people.

Am I getting to be an old world person yet? Would a new world person match beats because it's of value, or just because it's the right thing to do to get along?

Fun tune. Always thought provoking.

You guys ever listen to the live album "Show of Hands"? "Manhattan Project" and "Time Stand Still" are my two favorites. Done live too! Amazing stuff, and it's always good to get Aimee Mann on a track.

(god that woman has a beautiful voice)

I find the studio versions of those to have a lot less energy. Production values on the live stuff are not quite up to par, but somehow that all just adds to the energy of the tunes.

For me, going to some humongous arena to see anyone these days is kind of a letdown especially when you've been that close back when an artist is just starting off ... I still support those artists I met and played on my show through purchasing their music, but big arena's kind of suck. Anyway, that's my $.02.

Sorry about that Mrs. M - growler's full.

If this damned RV can haul four adults, two kids, two dogs and three weeks worth of crap for a drive to Michigan and back, there's plenty of room for you!

The hard part will be keeping you and DT and your little tet-a-tets separated.

Nice!

I like this service. I'm rocking on it right now, and am totally enjoying it. "Game of Life" is playing right now. Good tune, and you are right, they are doing their best work right now.

This is great music to program to. I've got my little micro controller IDE up, working on some sprite code and in a nice groove.

I just barely heard the last 20 minutes or so of Rockline, which had Rush on it. Darn, I always forget to try to find out who's going to be on the show in advance.

And, I was going to discuss a deep, dark secret that's not going to be deep or dark anymore... every year on 12-21, since it's 2112 backwards, I make sure to listen to the CD/album in its entirety. Makes the day with the shortest amount of daylight much better.

Brianl: do you have any news about the "new" events center in Everett? Rumor has it that will be the venue...can't wait for the road trip :-)

Worst case scenario: Rush dates conflict with the Scorpions tour...:-( What will we do?

Hmm, when will the Scorpions be rolling through? There has to be SOME way to figure this out ...

Everett Event Center, it must be where the WHL Silvertips play. I know they built a new arena for them, it's small and cozy I would imagine. The only other venue in Everett is the performing arts center, and while a great venue (saw Chuck Mangione there), it's way inadequate for a Rush concert.

I guess we'll find out in a couple of weeks! :-)

I'm just guessing we'll see the Scorpions supporting the new CD. There's talk on their site but nothing confirmed.

It is the Event Center, from what I've seen. I wonder what it's like? They'd be at home in a hockey arena, for sure! ;)

Beano, Sadly I am not hearing any tracks except on rare occasion "Humanity" and "Far Cry" from Rush just as rare. I just seem to have to resort to my Zune when I get a hankering for this great new Rock from the Classic Rock groups still putting out bitchin new material!

Are any other stations playing any of this new material?

PS....Heard "Citizen Soldier" from 3 Doors Down and thought it was done very well. I may need to further explore some of these young upstarts and see if there are any more nuggets worth prospecting for!

Unless you have an Amex and can do the pre-sale, you have to make Solomon's choice: both shows are on sale the same day. Or, team up and get on both shows at the same time...If we did that, we'd be sitting together at the show(s), too.

There used to be a Rush board called "The Rush Chronicles" (TRC) that always had early and solid info, but it's gone dark permanently, according to the Administrator...It was a great site. RIP, TRC.

"Cygnus X-1" www.cygnus-x1.net would be the next spot to check as soon as the first show opens...I would bet the set list will be there ASAP. This site is also Trekkie heaven BTW!

Got pretty good seats for the CC Amp show yesterday on the KGON pre-sale! Not as good as last year, but Geddy's side this time: 101/AA/31. I'll be running that race again today for the Gorge show.

Thank Goodness for KGON Workforce!
