Veterans make up one in four homeless people in the United States, though they are only 11 percent of the general adult population, according to a report to be released Thursday.

And homelessness is not just a problem among middle-age and elderly veterans. Younger veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan are trickling into shelters and soup kitchens seeking services, treatment or help with finding a job.

Some advocates say such an early presence of veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan at shelters does not bode well for the future. It took roughly a decade for the lives of Vietnam veterans to unravel to the point that they started showing up among the homeless. Advocates worry that intense and repeated deployments leave newer veterans particularly vulnerable.

"We're going to be having a tsunami of them eventually because the mental health toll from this war is enormous," said Daniel Tooth, director of veterans affairs for Lancaster County, Pa

-Yet another unplanned for result of Bush's unnecessary war. Very sad.

Homelessness is just one hidden cost of the Iraq and Afghanistan military adventures. Let's not forget the suicides, divorces, depressions, PTSDs, unemployment that can result from serving over there for 15 months at a shot.

Sad that the "new" homeless vets have so much in common with the Viet Nam vets. Both are in my store every day, and I can't begin to describe how the way they've been treated by the system makes me feel. Medical is a nightmare from the VA...turned down AUTOMATICALLY for SSI/SSD upon first application...it goes on and on.

A 'Nam vet in our homeless community passed away last week and no one at St. Francis could even find family to come to the memorial, much less any info or help from the VA, because he was outdoors. His name is David Stutesman, he was my friend for four years, and he will be remembered and missed.

I wonder how the homelessness and other problems that Vietnam and Iraq/Afghanistan vets are facing compares to previous warfare.

I know that World War II vets were welcome back with open arms, and numerous bills and legislation helped them slide back into society, creating the largest economic boom in our history. Vietnam vets were ignored largely, many were denounced and shat upon by America ... yeah, I can see where that would create some psychological issues.

90% or more of veterans are men, most homeless are men. so the statistics are distorted to begin with.

Also they are taking peoples word that they are veterans, and many homeless have found they can get more handouts, if they claim to be a veteran.

After what we went through in Vietnam, I am surprised more of us are not on the streets.

Veterans account for 25% of homeless population

Homeless people account for the other 75 percent!

Anything short of a TOTAL support network for Vets is criminal!

If they choose not to get help then it's on them, otherwise......

VETS GET WHAT THEY NEED! no bullshit, no red tape, no hoops to jump through. Temporary housing, food, training, medical, mental health care, substance intervention, they ask, they get!
