Is this politically motivated, or is this due to piss poor management at Clear Channel? Maybe a combo of both?

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,306164,00.html

Bruce Springsteen should be very happy. He has the No. 1 album, a possible Grammy for Best Album of the Year for "Magic," an album full of singles and a sold-out concert tour.

Alas, there’s a hitch: Radio will not play "Magic." In fact, sources tell me that Clear Channel has sent an edict to its classic rock stations not to play tracks from "Magic." But it’s OK to play old Springsteen tracks such as "Dancing in the Dark," "Born to Run" and "Born in the USA."

"Clear Channel seems to have sent a clear message to other radio outlets that at age 58, Springsteen simply is too old to be played on rock stations. This completely absurd notion is one of many ways Clear Channel has done more to destroy the music business than downloading over the last 10 years. It’s certainly what’s helped create satellite radio, where Springsteen is a staple and even has his own channel on Sirius."

it sounds like it but the new songs by Bruce Springsteen, the Eagles or anyone else who is still recording should be played on classic rock stations that only makes sense as listeners to classic rock stations might like to hear the new songs by artists typically associated with classic rock too.

How do you define that? He is after all a classic rock artist still putting out great material. Would you not play any new Rush or the awesome new Scorpions tracks either? I feel that many stations really miss the boat by not playing more of the current material by classic rock artists. But then that is just my personal opinion. After all if I don't hear it on the air then I just queue it up on the ol' Zune when I want to hear it. The end result is that I am no longer part of a radio station's audience. My suggestion would be to add some of the solid new material into rotation. This new material is kind of handicapped in that even though it is top 40 material it won't realize that status over current artists being over-hyped by the record labels.

Just my opinion, but I'd say the Bruce should be featured but probably not rotated. Springsteen is just like McCartney, Madonna, Rod Stewart, Tina Turner, Rolling Stones and others... they still release new music but they no longer have hits.

They don't have the hit's because they are not over-hyped like the crap from newer artists is. I'm gonna pick on my favorite artist Sammy Hagar. The three top 40 tunes There's only one way to rock, you're love is driving me crazy, and I can't drive 55. When those three over-played tunes are played I turn the radio off. As much as I like Sammy I can't stand those tunes any longer. I would much rather queue up some of his more current material like Eagle's Fly, Give to Live, and his version of Whiter Shade of Pale. Keep pumping out over-played top 40 without adding in the fresh new material and my TSL will keep dwindling as I seek it out via other means than radio. All this is of course this listeners opinion and not meant as a dig towards anyone or any station.

Speaking of Sammy Hagar who I became good friends with during my days at Capitol when he was signed to the label.....Sammy as you know started a night club in Cabo San Lucas called Cabo Wabo. The club was/is a huge success and Sammy decided to market his own brand of tequila under the Cabo Wabo brand. It is first quality and sold well, even being retailed in Costco stores. About 6 months ago it was announced that Cabo Wabo Tequila was sold to one of the world's biggest liquor distributors. Sammy sold 80% of his company for......$80 mllion dollars!!!! The Little Red Rocker figured out that there is a lot of ways to make big money in rock n roll besides with a guitar.

Ya but he is one hell of an entertainer! Even at 60 the man's pipes are better than any of these young wanna be's of today! Didn't Eddie originally have some investment in that but sold out to Sammy when they split up?

Clear Channel is such a piece of shit, it amazes me how ANYONE would want to work for that company. I hope stations like Charlie and KGON are smart enough to play the new material from Springsteen because he is still pumping out great new material that DESERVES AIRPLAY!!!!

It is so sad that we live in an age where radio continues to overplay these worthless hacks like Brittney Spears, yet they won't play "real music" by REAL artists who actually HAVE TALENT!

Id love to get some toilet paper that says "clear Channel" on it. Wiping my bum on it would be the most satisfying thing ever!

I agree with you folks. If the new material is top notch, why not put it on the only stations that care about the classic artists anymore? Who else is gonna play a new Rolling Stones record? Do the suits really make these decisions ignoring the fact that folks spend millions to see 'em live? The very same stations will be promoting those shows, but have a staff that often have to buy their own copy to get familiar with the new material.

The system is lazy, and gets even lazier with known quantities. The dilemma for older artists is compounded by any sort of "message" they might have in this day and age. Macca might sell a million, Bruce might be number one, Rhymin' Simon might still be pithy as hell, but if they aren't "selling a lifestyle" they will be largely ignored.

What is acceptable now is a band or performer who is programmed to sell. Whether it is bullies, bling and bullets, hair dye and noserings, or pick-up trucks and implants, it must sell and nothing more. If there is no tidy tie-in, there will be no airplay on stations who have to support a diverse range of industries outside of entertainment.

I believe that if the current output of any artist is equal to their greatest moments, it deserves airplay. We can all agree that some of the greatest work Johnny Cash ever recorded was for Rick Rubin, but did it really get spins? Sure, on an outlet like KINK, but until his passing, most so called "country" stations wouldn't touch him with a ten foot pole. For those people who believed he was anything less than a national treasure, I give you this from the man himself:

http://www.rock-explosion.com/images/finger.jpg

Of course, having a long career does not always ensure success, no matter how hard the material is pushed:

If Clear Channel is so anti-Boss, why this from just one year ago?

"Exclusive: Bruce Springsteen Offers Latest Album as “Sneak Peek” for Clear Channel Radio Listeners
Be the First to Listen to Springsteen’s “We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions” Before it’s Released
WHAT:
Bruce Springsteen’s album doesn’t hit stores until April 25th but listeners have an exclusive opportunity to listen to the album in its entirety on-demand beginning today. Clear Channel Radio is the only place to catch a “Sneak Peek” of Bruce Springsteen’s latest album, We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions. This online exclusive will be available on 390 Clear Channel Radio station Web sites!"

There has always been a debate about whether "oldies" based stations, whether oldies, classic hits, or classic rock should play current hits. With very very few exceptions (Beach Boys Kokomo for one) the decision has always been NOT to play current hits by older artist. This is not a Clear Channel issue. It's a decades old formatics issue.

And every mature generation has bemoaned that stations play no-talent newcomers (like the Beatles) instead of great classic acts (like Sinatra and Steve & Eydie). Half the country is under 30 years old. Most have no interest in their grandparents (our!) music.

Although I never visit, I assume that on the other side of this board CC is also responsible for Global Warming and bird flu.

Nope, its not CC. The person actually responsible for Global Warming also comes over to this side and posts in threads related to KLYC. :-)

KNRK played some recent tracks from Johnny Cash BEFORE he went to the other side.

"Limbo Rock" To new to be played on classic stations and to old to play on stations playing newer rock, because as you said, today's youth could care less about the rock groups we grew up with. When I asked the kid (maybe 20) at circuit city a while back if they had a copy of Scorpions Humanity Hour 1 he said "Who". I fealt old just then. But i'll take the Scorp's over Tool or Daughtry any day!!!!!!

Edit Add: The new Eagles CD is pretty good! Have not heard it all the way through yet but I like what i've heard so far. Gotta go to Wal-Mart to get it though.

"With very very few exceptions (Beach Boys Kokomo for one) the decision has always been NOT to play current hits by older artist. This is not a Clear Channel issue. It's a decades old formatics issue."

Terry, I agree with you. My rant was not against any specific outlet. While CC is not a good company on the whole, they do have many great folks drawing checks at their outlets. I would also add that "Kokomo" was flimsy tripe compared to "Love & Mercy" from Brian Wilson during the same time period. Many folks still detest the former tune, but consider the latter a neo-classic. Obviously, the decision was not based on quality, merely ease of promotion.

Yes, there were stations that played Johnny Cash, before he passed, but not in the format he helped create. Just as there are stations who play the new Boss record, and the latest from the Stones, but not necessarily the ones who count on those acts for daily bread and butter.

KNRK trusts Rick Rubin to know what the kids like and made a smart move by spinning Cash. KGON has also put in new material from legends like the Stones, so I am not calling them out either. Both stations seemed to respond to the oldest feedback in the world: Demand.

If the Boss is 58, he still ought to have a shot at the top of the pops. Satchmo was 63 when "Hello Dolly" knocked the Beatles out of the #1 spot. Ironically, Louis Armstrong was a superstar during the halcyon days of rock and roll, when fast cars and surfing ruled, folk was everywhere, and the British invasion was taking a firm hold. A young demographic outnumbered their elders by a staggering ratio, but the whole record buying public was still the measure of success. It was also a damn fantastic album.

I am not advocating a station like K-Hits break format for a new tune from Paul Simon. Back in the day, I did not expect to hear the latest from Del Shannon on KISN either. It just seems to me that if the material ranks among their best work -- like the Boss or the Man in Black and Satchmo before him -- it ought to be considered by genre based formats. Obviously, not by those with programming restricted to a historical time frame.

All of this is frustrating to watch unfold, so I spieled. Did it strike anyone else as odd that the Wilburys had a line-up of bonafide geniuses that -- outside of Tom Petty -- couldn't break into the charts consistently? It seems to me that Roy Orbison was the last legendary person given the opportunity to pass into the great beyond with a current hit on the radio. It is mighty sad if he was truly the last great rocker to have that opportunity.

Long live rock, be it dead or alive.

Louis Armstrong would have been a lot more than 63 when "Wonderful World" topped the charts! I think they said at the time that he was born 70 years earlier than the artist he replaced at #1, Tiffany.

As I see it, IF an artist has a number of tunes spinning on a classic station, then the audience will probably have an interest in the new release as well. as long as it fits. (The Boss goes country probably not a good fit for Classic rock.) If it blows, (Think Beatles post mortem) then it's gone. If not, then BAM, Instant Classic! If no one spins it because an artist like Bruce is too old for the rock format, the release is too rock for the pop format, then you are cutting off future tunes for the "CLASSIC" format. The end result is a stagnation much like oldies...........Sorry, some great music from stars past of late got NO airplay. In years past they would have hit the top 40 and Adult contemporary formats. Now you hear them in department and grocery stores. Radios loss! Unfortunate that it also is the listeners loss as well. Unless the goal is a smaller pie for everyone to share, someone needs to wake up to the fact that many of these long lasting artists still offer a viable product!

I think politics have played a part in the decision, and this is Clear Channel's way to hush the anti-war movement. They'd rather play "Born in the USA" thinking it's a patriotic song...even though it's not. That's how dumb Clear Channel is.

It's interesting to note some of these artists like Springsteen who never get any current airplay.. but whenever they release a new album it instantly sells good with or without radio airplay..it's called "Fanbase" another artist who is a perfect example of this is: Prince...P rarely get's airplay but yet his past couple of albums have been some of the biggest sellers in his career...and is it just me or did his performance at the Superbowl earlier this year kick ass??

No,I would love to hear the new stuff on the radio from some of these established artists..but I wonder at this point in a career like Springsteen or the Stones..are they personally saying to themselves:"Awww shiiiiit, C.C. isn't playing me..my career is over..I must be doomed"...I don't think so.

Totally!

IMHO, that's all stuff I would enjoy hearing on the radio. My point was radio is used to push products.

If the products don't need pushing (and these don't), then radio is of little business value, that's all.

You know I think part of the reason I love the new material from classic artists so much is the fact that it is not over-played and stale. Regardless if it is aired or not I will purchase new material from the groups I really like and if the Scorp's decide to tour I am so there just like I will be for Rush 2008!!!!!

"UPDATE - 10/3: Alex Lifeson has confirmed the 2008 tour saying that they'll play a total of 110 shows through the summer of 2008; that's another 45 shows."

The fuss is because due to poor management of KINK and poor management of what could have been as good or better than KINK, KSND, there is no AAA in the PDX area.
So, The Boss is not being heard anywhere around here.

Dodger,

Get over it.

So what if you got fired at KSND several years ago! People get fired in radio all the time. But now, KSND is dead. You're still alive. Ultimately, you won.

Learn to forgive and move on and stop whining about "what might have been."

KINK, as Xpert noted, is a CBS station, not CC. And they're playing new Springsteen.

So lighten up, and learn to enjoy today.

Since Cheap Channel will not play anything new from Springsteen because he is too old, does that mean Cheap Channel will no longer play new music from Madonna?? Because after all, she is almost 50, and what about Aerosmith. If they put out a new album will Cheap Channel not play them???
So what is the cut off, 40???? 50?? 60??? 35???
I guess Cheap Channel will have to only play the young Talentless hacks that lip sync bubblegum pop tunes. ITs SO pathetic that the music industy and Cheap Channel Only care about image and not about actual talent.
Just think of all the great new artists that have TONS OF TALENT, the ones that can actually sing and play 20 different instruments . Im guessing alot of these talents will be denied radio airplay especially on Cheap Channel stations because they are either ugly, not marketable or too old. If you're not young and HOT, you will never get airplay on a Cheap Channel station! Marketability means EVERYTHING, talent means NOTHING!
