This thread is created
for the express purpose to just say hello to Herb and wish him a good day. No bashing allowed. No politics, no arguing. You do that in every other thread. You may only say hello, or wish a good day.

HEY HERB, Hello, and a very good day to you.

Mrs. M, be nice as well.

Thank you for your cooperation.

I'll break 10K for that!

Herb, love you man. Really. If we didn't have one of you, we would likely have to invent one of you.

And that's meant in the nicest of ways.

Consider coming this Sunday. I'm gonna swing by, probably earlier than later. It's fun, people are cool, and that's just it really. Happy times, meeting really great people. Nobody here would do anything other than just be cool, and you won't be judged on anything. I worried about this, so did the Mrs_M. Turned out to be a non-issue.

Been sick as a dog. Wife too. Work ugly. So, I'm just keeping my head down, letting it pass.

For those that e-mailed --thanks! Nice to know one is missed.

An Ode to Herb (with apologies to Keats)

Season of fists and mellow Nixon-ness,
Close bosom-friend of the maturing Solon;
Conspiring with him how to load and bless
With spin the threads that round the Internet run,
To bend with concern the tan and sage'd posts,
And fill all links with right-ness to the core,
To swell the GOP odds, and resurrect Milhous' ghost
With a sweet request that Holiness be more,
And still more, later flowers for the libs,
to let them know that Herb will never cease,
For he has o'er-brimm'd their certitude.

Try to make it to the shindig Herb; I'll do my best to be there.

Radioblogman, you and I have had very little interaction. I understand that sarcasm doesn't always translate on the written page. And you don't know me at all. So it's understandable that you'll jump on me calling Herb " my nigga." So let me explain and you can THEN make a decision in any way you wish - I do not care.

#1. Me calling someone " my nigga " and really meaning it in any kind of racial way is so out of character that it quickly passes racISM and becomes instantly absurd.

#2. Herb, of ALL people on this board, hearing/seeing him called something that could not fit any less made me laugh. Maybe it didn't make you laugh, but it did me. So I typed it. I thought about calling him an endeared " cracker." but wouldn't you know it? I didn't want to be called a racist. THAT, coming from my people, still hasn't become as absurd yet. So I went with nigga.

#3. If you are going to call me racist, you are going to have to point to something else to support it other than me calling Herb " my nigga." Until then, I'm not convinced.

The end.

Too late E, I know even Herb would avoid using the N word, and Chicken I do not care what color you are, everyone must stop using that word. I grew up in the South when that word was used too many times. This is a new day and there is no room for it in our lives. Chicken, you are my brother much deeper than our skin colors.

To [in recent posting order]:

Radioblogman, Edselehr, Chickenjuggler, MissingKSKD, Skybill & Roger-

I am humbled and appreciative of your kindness, which is often undeserved.

To answer forthrightly regarding the upcoming PDXRadio shindig, I don't believe I'll be there in body, but certainly shall be in spirit. I also hope you all enjoy some rather fine spirits in the spirit of friendship, which I know you all will.

If there indeed is Stella Artois on tap, Chickenjuggler, please hoist a frosty one for Ol' Herb.

And Edseleher-Your talent knows no bounds. As I began to read your fine prose, I noticed it had a slight resemblance in metre to the 1960's song "These Are A Few Of My Favourite Things."

You guys are great.

You know this is a good idea this type of thread. Roger this was brilliant

We should have a personal thread for every PDXer where we express positive thoughts towards those, even those we seriously disagree with, and show some common courtesy. Everyone deserves to be acknowledged both publicly and privately. What a difference this could make in someone’s day.

I suggest we start with Mrs. Merkin for the next personal thread.

Herb,

Here is a little pick me up to start your day. Fifty years ago, Dwight David Eisenhower pushed Congress to pass the Civil Rights Act of 1957. It was the first such legislation to be proposed in the century after Reconstruction.

http://www.eisenhower.archives.gov/dl/Civil_Rights_Civil_Rights_Act/CivilRightsA ctfiles.html

If he were still alive, October 14th would have been his 117th birthday. Happy belated birthday, Ike. Happy Wednesday to you, Herb.

This thread was a brilliant idea Roger.

Okay, Trixter.

In another room, have one of your liberal friends pour you a glass of canned or bottled beer, and also a glass of draft beer. Then drink both.

If you don't agree that the draft beer is better by a large margin, I seriously wonder about your taste buds.

Mr. Nixon indeed had many deep character flaws.

Just as important, he served his country honourably in World War II. Even more important, he fought the communist threat valiantly and quite possibly helped prevent World War III by standing up to such a blackhearted, inhumane foe that shackled and murdered millions.

I saw an interview on TV by the guy in the Nixon white house who wrote a book about the president and the king...Apparently, Elvis actually packed heat onto the white house grounds and some secret service agents had to persuade him that it wasn't something he should be carrying during his meeting with Mr. Nixon.

I can just see Elvis pulling out his weapon and showing it to Nixon. That would have made for interesting journalism.

Since Nixon was an accomplished pianist the two of them should have put on a mini-concert. That would be worth paying to see.

No worries. This is your thread anyway, so we'll keep it on a good vibe. I often root for the underdog myself.

Not that he needs to announce when he'll be taking a break from the board - but I do care that everything is OK with Herb.

Merry Christmas, Herb!

I will be hoisting a Stella in your honor, breaking my cardinal rule to never drink beer I can see through :-)!

Really, Herb, best of everything to you and yours.

Where is the Herbster anyway? It's just not the same without him spinning around on his Hammster Wheel!

I did not mean what I said in a bad light, just that it really is not the same around here when Herb is off the net. Even with all of the contorversy he stir's up at least you can say he makes you think about things, whether to further support your point or get you thinking about his. Either way he does generate conversation for sure.

Who knows? Maybe he's getting stoked up for the new year?

Take some time off, do some reading, do some family stuff, etc...

I do not care what it says about me when I say that I appreciate opposing views - and Herb is full of them. It helps me articulate my own belliefs in a way that would be diminished if not for Herb's ability to challenge.

So call me whatever you want. There is a lot to admire about Herb.

Besides, my concern about him not posting lately stems from wanting to know that he's ok - or his daughter is ok. I can find all sorts of people to challenge my take on things. But I like knowing that Herb is ok.

That was all. No politics. No agenda. Not even a need to the degree in which I may have just made it sound like. I just would like to know that he's, you know, ok.

OK?

ok.

I'm there too.

Actually love the challenges! That is, when he's getting after it and not just playing.

Have to admit, I've sorted out a few things on the way through dealing with Herb. That's all good, IMHO.

So ok - here's a deal. Not THE deal.

Herb, just touch base and I'm out. It's not a huge deal. Just, you know, when you can, you should.

It matters to me for whatever it's worth.

Vitalogy, pick another thread to pick a fight, please.

It could be something as simple as a designed reason why Herb isn't around. It could be something normal. He's been around long enough to warrant a quick note, eh? It's unusual enough to notice, for me.

I'll say this about ol' Herb.
Even when he's not here, he generates a lot of traffic!

I agree, the whole "Jimmy Carter anti-semitism bashing the US all day long" thing made me really do some research just to make sure I had solid footing.

That is the core reason why I enjoy this forum. We've a group here that really will engage. If you push hard, go do some digging, get after it, you can clarify where the high ground is, then figure out where you stand in all of that.

Damn cool, IMHO.

@CJ Yep. Totally warranted. He's taken a vacation or two in the past. IMHO, highly likely that's the case now.

Starting to miss Nixon. LOL! Actually, Nixon is promiently featured in the Futurama DVDs for someone needing a Nixon fix.

A big downside of internet socializing is that an absence could be anything from a computer glitch to a death. We may never know.

IMO, the thoughts here from late last week prove how great this board is... we might fiercely disagree with someone politically or professionally, but we give a rip when someone is gone for a while, and a civil enough that we can even get together for a few in-person words every once in a while.
